Install Fonts on Windows 10 or 11—and Find Them Afterwards

Install a font from a trusted TTF or OTF file, confirm it in Settings, and understand the limits of C:WindowsFonts as a storage reference.

To install a font in Windows 11 or Windows 10, extract its ZIP file if needed, then right-click the .ttf or .otf file and choose Install. To make it available to every account on the PC, choose Install for all users. Check the result at Settings > Personalization > Fonts.

Install a font from a downloaded file

  1. Download the font from a source you trust. Microsoft cautions that downloaded font files should come from trusted sources: Manage Fonts in Windows.

  2. If the download is a ZIP archive, extract it. Locate the font file, usually ending in .ttf or .otf.

  3. Right-click the font file and select Install. If the font should be available to every user account on this PC, select Install for all users instead. Windows may ask for permission; proceed only if you trust the file’s source.

  4. Alternatively, double-click the font file to open Font Previewer, then select Install, as described in Microsoft’s Office font instructions.

  5. Open Settings > Personalization > Fonts and search for the font name. Seeing it in this list confirms Windows has it available.

Where Windows stores fonts

Microsoft’s Word help identifies C:WindowsFonts as the Windows Fonts folder and describes adding fonts there by dragging in extracted font files: Add a font. This is a useful reference to the system Fonts folder, but Microsoft’s cited guidance does not establish that every installation scope—including per-user installs—stores files there. If your question is whether a font is installed, the Fonts page in Settings is the clearer check.

Manage or remove installed fonts

Use Settings > Personalization > Fonts to search the available fonts, preview them, hide them, or uninstall them. Select a font’s entry to find its uninstall action. If you need language-specific or supplemental fonts, look under Related settings for the option to download fonts for all languages.

What to do if a font is missing from an app

  1. Check Settings > Personalization > Fonts first. If the font is not listed, install it using one of the methods above.

  3. Check whether the app supports custom fonts. Microsoft notes that not all apps support custom fonts. Microsoft says Office can use a custom font once it is correctly installed in Windows.
