Instagram’s read receipts show whether you’ve viewed a direct message; activity status shows whether you’re active now or when you were last active. They are separate settings, so switching one off does not switch off the other.
What Instagram read receipts reveal
Read receipts tell other people that you have read their message. In a chat, that is the signal commonly shown as “Seen.” Meta describes read receipts as letting others know they have read a message, and says you can turn them on or off for all chats or for specific chats.

Meta’s documented global route is Settings and activity → Messages and story replies → Show read receipts. Turn the control on or off to manage the setting for all chats. Meta’s March 4, 2024 announcement confirms chat-specific controls too, but does not give the steps for reaching them. Menu wording and availability can vary by app version or account; if the labels differ, look for the equivalent read-receipts control in message settings.

What activity status reveals
Activity status concerns your Instagram use, not whether you opened a particular message. Instagram says people you follow and people you message may be able to see whether you are active or when you were last active. When enabled, an icon or a timestamp indicating the last time you were active can appear beside your profile photo in Instagram messages.

Instagram’s Help Center gives this route: open the menu and settings, then choose Messages and story replies → Show activity status, and turn the control on or off. The cited help page is in Spanish, so English labels or the route shown in your app may differ.
How the two settings differ

The practical distinction is “Seen” versus “Active now” or a last-active time. One refers to a message view; the other refers to account activity. Meta documents them as separate controls.

Which setting should you change?
- To manage whether someone can tell you viewed a DM: change Show read receipts.
- To manage whether eligible people can see you are active or recently active: change Show activity status. Turning it off also removes your ability to see other people’s activity status.
- To manage both signals: change both controls separately. Turning off activity status does not, by itself, turn off read receipts, and turning off read receipts does not, by itself, hide activity status.
