The figure is Instagram’s monthly audience—not a daily count and not the combined audience of Meta’s apps.
What does Instagram’s 3 billion figure mean?
Meta described the milestone as 3 billion monthly active users. Its announcement did not provide a more detailed count or explain the methodology behind Instagram’s figure, so it should be treated as the company’s announced monthly audience number rather than a granular or independently audited account count. Meta’s announcement was published September 28, 2025.

It is distinct from Meta’s company-wide daily activity metric. In its Q3 2025 filing, Meta reported an average of 3.54 billion Family daily active people for September 2025. That estimate counts registered, logged-in users who visited at least one of Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, or WhatsApp on a given day; it is not an Instagram-only monthly total. Meta’s filing defines the metric and notes that estimating unique people is difficult because one person may use multiple accounts. Meta said the worldwide Family DAP estimate’s margin of error would generally be approximately 3%. Those caveats apply to Family DAP, not to a disclosed Instagram MAU methodology.
How did Instagram get to this milestone?
The public milestones reported in contemporary coverage show a substantial increase over time, but they are not a continuous audited series. Instagram announced 1 billion users in 2018; Mark Zuckerberg announced that Instagram had passed 2 billion monthly active users in 2022; Meta announced 3 billion in 2025. TechCrunch’s account of the milestones provides that context.

What does Meta say is driving Instagram’s growth?
Instagram head Adam Mosseri said that “almost all” of Instagram’s growth in recent years had been driven by DMs, Reels, and recommendations. He made the comment in an Instagram video, as quoted by TechCrunch on September 24, 2025. That is Mosseri’s explanation of the company’s growth, not independent proof that those features caused the increase.
- Messaging: Meta said messaging had become Instagram’s most popular way to share photos and videos.
- Reels: Meta said Reels were reshared more than 4.5 billion times per day across Meta platforms. That is a cross-platform figure, not an Instagram-only count.
- Recommendations: Mosseri included recommendations among the features he said had driven growth; Meta’s milestone announcement did not quantify their individual contribution.
Meta’s announcement also appeared alongside news of a limited test of a Reels-first app experience in India. The announcement does not indicate that the test was available globally.
