What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Instagram is finally giving more knobs for your feed—just not the kind that guarantees perfect control. You can reduce certain types of posts, mute accounts and topics, and shift what you see by changing your Feed mode.
The trick is knowing which controls affect which surface (Feed, Reels, Explore) and how Instagram’s ranking responds after you make changes. This guide walks through every practical option, from fast “this isn’t for me” actions to deeper settings.

When people say Instagram “lets you take control,” they usually mean you can shape recommendations and suppress unwanted content. Instagram still uses ranking signals (your interactions, viewing patterns, and account relationships), so your feed can’t become a fixed timeline.

In practice, you’ll get the biggest wins by combining two approaches: (1) removing sources you don’t want and (2) training the algorithm with what you do want.
Prerequisites: get the right version and permissions
Before you change anything, make sure your app is current enough to show the latest feed controls and labels.
- iPhone / iPad: update Instagram in the App Store, then check Settings > Instagram (if shown) for any additional feed-related options.
- Android: update Instagram in Google Play, then confirm any “similar content” or “topics” controls appear under Settings.
- Account access: be sure you’re logged into the same Instagram account on your main device; feed training is account-specific.
If you’re on an older build, some settings may be missing or appear under different menus.

Control your feed from inside the posts you’re already seeing
Instagram’s fastest feed control usually starts at the post level. When you see something you don’t want, act on it immediately—Instagram takes that as a relevance signal.
Hide, mute, or manage interactions
Use the post menu to tell Instagram what to do with that content. The exact labels can vary, but the actions are typically available via the three-dot menu.
- Open the post in Feed.
- Tap ••• (three dots) or Manage.
- Choose the closest option, such as Hide, Mute, Turn off notifications, or Not interested.
- Confirm prompts if Instagram asks you to validate the change.
What to use:
- Hide: reduces similar posts from appearing as frequently.
- Mute: prevents that account’s posts from showing prominently in your Feed (and often reduces Stories/Reels from them too, depending on the surface).
- Not interested: tells Instagram to down-rank similar recommendations.
Take action on Reels you don’t want
Reels are the most aggressive recommendation surface, so quick actions matter. If a Reel doesn’t fit, don’t just swipe—use the feedback controls.
- While watching a Reel, tap ••• on the right side.
- Pick Not interested or a similar “reduce” option.
- If prompted, confirm and continue swiping.
If you keep seeing the same theme (e.g., dropshipping ads, a specific creator’s reposts), repeat the action a few times. Instagram usually needs multiple signals before it changes ranking noticeably.
Choose the right feed mode: Following vs. Suggested
One of the most tangible “control” features is choosing what Feed is prioritizing. Instagram separates content into modes such as a more creator-centric feed versus more recommendation-heavy content.

On most accounts, you’ll see options like Following (people you follow) and sometimes Suggested or similar mixes.
- Open Instagram and go to Home (your main Feed).
- Tap the feed mode label (often shown as Following).
- Switch between modes and observe which one better matches what you want.
If your goal is “show me people I follow,” prioritize Following. If you want more discovery, suggested modes may be useful—but they’re also where you’ll need stronger “not interested” feedback.
Use Settings to reduce unwanted content
When individual post actions aren’t enough, Instagram’s Settings tools let you manage content at a broader level. The names can shift as Instagram rolls out updates, but the menu logic is consistent.
Accounts you’ve muted or restricted
Muting reduces what you see without fully severing the relationship. Restricting can also change what you see and how you interact with an account.
- Go to your profile.
- Tap ☰ (menu) > Settings and privacy.
- Find Muted accounts (or Muted).
- Review and unmute only if you actually want that content back.
Use this when you know the source (a creator, an ex, a spammer) and repeated post-level controls aren’t fully cutting through.
Topics and interests controls
Instagram also supports interest-based tuning, especially for recommendations. You’ll usually find this under content or recommendation settings.
- Go to Settings and privacy.
- Look for options like Content preferences, Topics you follow, or How many ads you see.
- Adjust interests to reduce categories you don’t want.
- Remove topics you followed accidentally or no longer care about.
Suggested content and recommendations
Some settings explicitly target recommendations: who/what Instagram thinks you want to see. This is where you’ll reduce “more like this” behavior.
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Find a section for Recommendations or Suggested content.
- Adjust or reset preference controls if Instagram offers a reset.
If you see a “Reset” option, use it only when you’re sure your training signals have drifted far from your goals.

Prioritize people you want more of
Control isn’t only about removing. If you want your Feed to feel better, you also need to strengthen the signals for the accounts you actually care about.
Follow changes that actually show up
Following more accounts can improve variety, but it doesn’t instantly rewrite your Home feed. Start with accounts you want in your regular rhythm.
- Follow creators you genuinely want.
- Engage with 3–5 posts (like, comment, or watch) within a short window.
- Use “following” mode for the cleanest reinforcement of the accounts you follow.
Engagement patterns matter more than just following—watch time and repeated interactions usually carry more weight than a single like.

If you keep seeing the same style of content you dislike, Instagram often thinks you want it because you lingered on it.
- When a Reel starts and you dislike it, swipe quickly.
- After swiping away, open its menu and select Not interested.
- Repeat with a few matching examples to create a clear signal.
This is one of the few “control” methods that feels like it works immediately—though the full impact can still take a day or two.
Works differently on Feed vs. Reels vs. Explore
Instagram’s surfaces use different ranking. You might successfully clean up Home/Feed while Explore continues recommending similar content, or vice versa.
- Feed (Home): heavily influenced by following relationships and your recent engagement.
- Reels (Home + dedicated views): driven by viewing behavior and “not interested” feedback.
- Explore: can ignore your Home fixes and use separate interest profiles.
If your main complaint is Explore, spend your feedback time inside Explore—not just on Home.

Troubleshooting when changes don’t stick
Sometimes you do everything right and the feed barely changes. That’s usually a ranking update delay, an incomplete signal, or an interaction loop (you’re still watching the content).

Wait time and ranking updates
Instagram doesn’t rebuild your profile every time you hide one post. Try changing 10–20 items over a few days rather than expecting instant perfection after a single action.
- Small tweaks: often show movement within 24–72 hours.
- Complex recommendation changes: may take a week, especially for topics.
App cache, login resets, and network quirks
If the UI shows the right controls but the feed keeps repeating stale content, try basic fixes that don’t affect your account preferences.
- Force close Instagram, then reopen it.
- Check for an app update and update if available.
- On iPhone/iPad, restart the device if the app has been running for days.
- On Android, clear cache (not data) for Instagram in Settings > Apps > Instagram.
- Re-check your feed mode (Following vs. Suggested).
A sign you’re dealing with caching issues: the same posts appear even after you’ve hidden them, but later they disappear after you restart.
When an account keeps resurfacing
If one account keeps returning across Reels and Feed, use the combined approach: mute the account plus give “not interested” feedback on the specific formats they post.
- Mute the account via Settings or the account menu.
- On the Reels/post instances, choose Not interested or Hide.
- Avoid re-watching similar content from them for a few days.
If it still persists, check whether the content is being re-uploaded by multiple accounts—muting only the original source won’t fully stop copies.

Most “Instagram feed control doesn’t work” complaints come from a few predictable errors.
- Only hiding without training: hiding is defensive; you still need to engage with what you want.
- Watching the stuff you hate: long watch time tells Instagram you’re interested, even if you disliked it.
- Switching feed modes once and forgetting: if you’re back in Suggested, you’ll keep getting recommendations.
- Using only one tool: the best results usually come from mixing account-level controls and post-level feedback.
- Expecting a strict chronological feed: Instagram ranks content; it doesn’t just sort by time.
Comparison: Instagram feed controls vs. “fully chronological” expectations
A fully chronological feed is simple: newest first. Instagram’s model is more dynamic: it tries to predict what you’ll want next. That means you can reduce bad matches, but you can’t guarantee a “perfect timeline” every day.

FAQs
Can I make Instagram show only accounts I follow?
You can get closer by using Following feed mode. However, Instagram may still include some recommendations depending on your activity and the way it structures the Home feed.
If I tap Not interested, does Instagram stop showing that content forever?
No. It reduces similar recommendations, but your feed adapts as your behavior changes. If you later engage with that content again, it can re-enter your recommendations.
Why does Explore keep recommending the same topics even after I fix Home?
Explore uses a separate interest model. You need to use feedback controls (hide, not interested) inside Explore or the Reels that show up there.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWill muting an account stop seeing their Stories too?
Often it reduces Stories from that account in your feed, but exact behavior varies by account relationship and platform UI. If Stories still appear, check your mute and notification settings in Settings and privacy.
Does clearing cache help with feed recommendations?
Clearing cache can fix UI repetition or loading problems, but it won’t “reset” your training signals in a clean way. For ranking changes, your actions and watch behavior matter most.
Bottom Line
Instagram’s feed control is real, but it’s partial. The best results come from pairing the big lever (switching to the Following feed mode) with repeated post-level feedback (hide/mute/not interested) and a little intentional engagement with creators you actually want.
If your changes feel slow, that’s normal. Give it a couple of days, then adjust again using the same controls—especially on Reels and Explore, where recommendations move fastest.
