If Instagram notifications are enabled but alerts still do not appear, check three layers: Instagram’s notification preferences, your phone’s permission and alert settings, and whether Focus or a paired device is changing where alerts show up. First identify whether all alerts are missing, only one type is affected, or alerts arrive silently or somewhere other than your phone.
Pin down what “not working” means
Before changing settings, note what you can still see. A badge that updates without a banner or sound points to a different presentation problem than a message alert that never arrives. Also note whether the issue affects every Instagram alert or only one category, such as direct messages or post activity.
- All Instagram alerts are missing: check app-level and phone-level notification controls.
- Only one category or chat is affected: inspect that category and any relevant person- or chat-specific notification preference.
- A badge appears but there is no sound or banner: check the phone’s alert presentation settings.
- The problem occurs on one account or device: compare another account or device if available. The difference is a useful clue, but it does not by itself establish the cause.
Check Instagram’s notification preferences
Instagram has separate controls for push notifications: users can pause them, enable sleep mode, and choose which interactions and posts generate alerts. An overall setting being on does not necessarily mean every notification category is selected. Instagram’s Help Center describes these controls; the available help result is localized in Russian and identifies guidance for Android, iPhone, and other platforms.

- Open Instagram and go to its notification settings.
- Check whether push notifications are paused or sleep mode is active.
- Open the category that matches the missing alert, such as messages or post activity, and confirm its preference.
- If only one person or conversation is affected, check the notification preference for that person or chat where available.
On iPhone, check permission and alert presentation
iOS controls whether Instagram may send notifications and how they appear. Open Settings > Notifications > Instagram, confirm notifications are allowed, then check the alert surfaces relevant to the problem: banners, Notification Center, sounds, or badges. Apple’s iPhone and Apple Watch notification guidance and iPhone and iPad notification guidance explain these controls. Labels and available options can vary by iOS version.
If alerts are delayed, hidden, or quiet
Review Focus and other notification settings. Apple recommends checking Focus when notifications do not arrive as expected; a Focus configuration can affect when or how alerts appear. If the notification is in Notification Center but no banner or sound appeared, the issue may be presentation rather than Instagram’s ability to generate the alert.
If you use an Apple Watch, check where the alert went
By default, Apple notifications go to either the paired Watch or the iPhone, not both. If an Instagram alert seems absent from the phone, check the Watch and its notification-mirroring settings. Apple explains this behavior in its iPhone and Apple Watch notification guide.
On Android, verify both app and device controls
Check Instagram’s own notification preferences, then check Android’s notification permission and alert settings for Instagram on your specific phone. Android menus and labels differ by device maker and OS version, so there is no single path that can be stated reliably for every Android phone. Use the device’s Settings search for “Instagram notifications” or consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your model and Android version.

Work out whether the issue is local or broader
Check whether notifications from other apps arrive normally, and compare Instagram across another account or device if you can. These comparisons help identify whether the symptom is limited to a category, account, or device; they do not prove that Instagram has a platform-wide fault.
Some users reported missing alerts on September 3, 2026, including a report of notifications working on an alternate account and another describing silent or missing iPhone lock-screen DM alerts while an Android device received them. Those are individual reports, not evidence of how widespread the problem is.

Windows Report also described user complaints about a “Your Notifications Are Off” warning despite settings being enabled in an article published August 19, 2026. It reported that some users said reinstalling did not help. This is secondary reporting, not an official Instagram or Meta confirmation of a known issue, its scope, or a fix.

If the relevant Instagram category is enabled, the phone permits alerts, and Focus or paired-device behavior does not explain the symptom, report the problem through Instagram’s in-app help or reporting flow. Include what is missing, whether other categories work, which device and account are affected, and what settings you checked. The reports above do not establish that reinstalling Instagram, resetting a phone, or changing unrelated settings will resolve the problem.
