If Instagram keeps closing or will not stay open, try the steps below in order, starting with closing and reopening the app. The steps are general troubleshooting guidance from Apple and Google—not a diagnosis of a current Instagram-specific problem—and none is guaranteed to fix every crash.
1. Close Instagram completely, then reopen it
Close the app rather than simply switching away from it, then open Instagram again. Apple recommends this as an early step when an iPhone or iPad app closes unexpectedly. On Android, use the phone’s app switcher to dismiss Instagram; if that does not help, the force-stop option is covered below.

Apple’s app troubleshooting guidance
2. Restart your phone or tablet
Restart the device and try opening Instagram again. Apple includes a restart in its iPhone and iPad troubleshooting sequence. Google advises Android users to restart after each troubleshooting step so they can check whether the issue has changed.

3. Check for an Instagram app update
An available update may address an app problem. Open the App Store on an iPhone or iPad, or Google Play on Android, find Instagram, and install an update if one is offered. On Android, Google’s route is Play Store → profile picture → Manage apps & devices, then check for available updates.

4. Check for an operating-system update
If Instagram is current or still crashes, check whether your device has an iOS, iPadOS, or Android update available. The exact settings path depends on the device and, for Android, its manufacturer; look in Settings for the software or system update section. Install an available update and test Instagram again.
5. On Android, force-stop Instagram and clear its cache
Android offers app controls that are not provided as a per-app “clear cache” step in Apple’s reviewed iPhone and iPad guidance. Menu names vary by Android device, but the controls are generally in Instagram’s app information screen in Settings.

- Open Settings and find Apps or App management.
- Select Instagram. If it is not listed, open the full app list.
- Tap Force stop, confirm if prompted, then reopen Instagram.
- If it still crashes, return to Instagram’s app information screen and open Storage or Storage & cache. Choose Clear cache, then test the app again.
Google notes that clearing cached data can temporarily free space and that cached data will build up again. It is not a permanent or guaranteed fix. Android may also offer Clear data or Clear storage; these are different from clearing cache and can erase app data, so do not use them casually.
6. Reinstall Instagram only after the earlier steps
Deleting and reinstalling is a later troubleshooting step because it can remove stored app data. Before proceeding, make sure you know how to sign in to your account again.

- iPhone or iPad: Delete Instagram, then download it again from the App Store. Apple warns that deleting an app may cause stored data to be lost.
- Android: Uninstall Instagram, then reinstall it from Google Play. Google says uninstalling an Android app erases its app data.
