Xbox’s reset under CEO Asha Sharma combines a large restructuring with a broader push toward players, creators, games across platforms and a next-generation console. The company has announced planned job cuts and studio changes, expanded its publishing relationship with Kojima Productions, and confirmed that Project Helix is in development. Helix’s developer hardware is planned for 2027; Xbox has not announced a consumer release date or price.
What Xbox’s reset involves
The changes are unfolding on separate tracks: staffing and studio restructuring, a revised strategic focus, and investment in future games and hardware. Xbox describes the goal as returning the business to growth while strengthening its platform. The announcements establish what the company plans to change, but they do not yet show whether the reset will succeed commercially.

These are Xbox’s announcements and progress updates, not a final audited count of departures. In the July memo, Xbox said the reductions were part of a year-long restructuring and that publicly announced first-party games or projects were not being cancelled as part of those reductions. The memo described different arrangements for the four studios, but the details available here do not establish the outcome for each one.

Why Xbox says it is making cuts
Sharma’s July 6 employee memo presented the restructuring as a financial and organizational response. She wrote, “Our business today is not healthy.” According to the memo, Xbox’s margins were 3–10 times lower than those of comparable platform and publishing businesses. Sharma also cited a smaller install base and higher cost structure at the start of Gen 9, and said Game Pass, multiplatform publishing and a broader content portfolio had not grown as expected. These are Xbox leadership’s explanations for the decisions, rather than independently established measures of their causes.

Sharma also wrote, “We will return to growth in 2027.” That is the company’s stated target, not a forecast that the announcements themselves demonstrate will be met.
What the Kojima Productions partnership covers
Xbox has expanded its relationship with Kojima Productions beyond OD. In a September 9 announcement, Xbox said it would publish PHYSINT, a game Kojima Productions describes as action-espionage. The companies also said they would collaborate beyond games in film and television. On September 17, Xbox named Bill Skarsgård as the game’s lead performer. The cited announcements gave no release date.

Xbox has not published the financial terms of the deal. Business Chief’s October 6, 2026 article characterized the PHYSINT arrangement as below typical AAA cost and said it included film and TV rights, but those deal-economics claims are not confirmed in Xbox’s announcements.

What Project Helix is—and what it is not yet
Project Helix is Xbox’s next-generation console project, in development with a custom AMD system-on-a-chip (SoC). Xbox says the platform is designed to play both Xbox console games and PC games. Danielle Partis summarized the company’s Developer Summit keynote for Xbox Wire on March 11, 2026: “Project Helix is designed to play your Xbox console and PC games, delivering leading performance and ushering in the next generation of console gaming.”
Xbox planned to begin sending alpha hardware to developers in 2027. That is a development schedule, not a consumer launch window. In April, Sharma told Windows Central that Xbox was not ready to share a launch timeline and that memory costs could affect pricing and availability. The cited material does not establish a retail date, price, disc support, or compatibility with existing accessories.

How this fits Xbox’s wider strategy
In its April 23, 2026 strategy memo, Xbox leaders Matt Booty and Asha Sharma said the company had reached over 500 million players worldwide. The memo does not call that figure monthly active players. It describes console as the foundation of the Xbox experience, with cloud extending that experience to other devices, and names daily active players as the company’s “north star.” It also sets out an ambition to give creators tools to reach a global audience.

Business Chief’s October 6 article also reported that Game Pass had peaked at 34 million subscribers and that Xbox contributed around 6% of Microsoft’s profits. Those figures are Business Chief’s reporting; the official Xbox materials cited here do not independently confirm them. The official player figure is “over 500 million,” without a monthly-active qualification.
Is Xbox shutting down or being sold?
The announcements described here do not say that Xbox is shutting down or being sold. They describe a restructuring, studio-management changes and continued investment in a future console, games and creator-focused plans. That does not settle every question about the business’s future, but it is different from an announcement of closure or sale.
