Researchers reported in 2012 that commercial fountain pen ink could serve as the counter electrode in laboratory dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), with reported efficiencies above 6% under simulated sunlight. It was a materials-repurposing experiment—not a coating for ordinary rooftop panels or a ready-made solar product.
How fountain pen ink fits into a dye-sensitized solar cell
A DSSC is a type of photovoltaic device with a photosensitive dye and an electrolyte. Its counter electrode helps complete the electrochemical circuit. In the 2012 study, researchers tested fountain pen ink as the material for that electrode, including in planar and fiber-shaped cells. The ink was not used as the light-absorbing layer or as a substitute for an entire solar cell.

What the researchers reported
The Peking University Institutional Repository abstract reports power-conversion efficiencies above 6% for the planar and fiber-shaped devices under AM1.5G illumination at 100 mW cm−2. Chemistry World’s 20 April 2012 account reports a cell efficiency of 6.2%, described as comparable to the platinum electrochemical device used in its comparison. It also reports that the ink film was 3 μm thick and applied by spin coating.

These are figures from the reported laboratory work, not a general performance rating for fountain pen ink or a benchmark for current commercial photovoltaics.
Ink and platinum: a device-level comparison
The study examined the ink electrode’s electrochemical behavior against platinum in its test devices. The repository abstract says electrochemical impedance spectroscopy found slightly lower charge-transfer resistance for ink counter electrodes than for platinum counter electrodes in planar cells. That is a specific measurement in the study’s device configuration; it does not establish that ink will outperform platinum in other cells or operating conditions.

The abstract also reports that adding titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles to the ink reduced device series resistance and the diffusion impedance of electrolyte moving through electrode pores. These observations concern the experimental cells and their electrode structure, not a modification that can be applied to a standard solar panel.
Why the result attracted attention
Commercial fountain pen ink is a manufactured suspension containing carbon particles. The researchers put existing work on optimizing carbon suspensions to a different use: making a DSSC counter electrode. Andrew Hamnett, identified by the Royal Society of Chemistry blog as a solar-energy expert and president of the Scottish Marine Institute, UK, called the result “a nice bit of lateral thinking.”

The Royal Society of Chemistry’s 12 April 2012 blog post presented the work as using everyday ink as a replacement for platinum in solar cells. That shorthand refers to the counter-electrode material in the studied DSSCs; it does not mean ink replaces a complete solar cell.

The report establishes a laboratory research result, not a consumer upgrade or product recommendation. The cited sources do not identify a particular ink brand or establish that a currently sold ink formulation will reproduce the experiment. They also do not establish a commercial panel product using this method.

- 🏞️【Compact Solar Power for Small DIY Projects】 Each 0.45W 3V 150mA solar cell supplies nominal power for low-power experiments, solar toys, garden lights, flashlights, and compact electronics.
- 🏞️【Quick Clip Connections for Easier Testing】 Included wire clip leads attach to exposed wires or metal contacts for temporary hookups, helping you test and adjust a circuit before final assembly.
- 🏞️【Flexible for Learning and Prototyping】 These mini solar panels suit makers, hobbyists, and supervised STEM activities, from solar toy models to small lighting and electronics experiments.
- 🏞️【Ten Matching Panels in a Compact Size】 The set includes 10 polycrystalline epoxy solar panels, each measuring 55 x 60 mm (2.17 x 2.36 in), for repeat builds, replacements, or multi-panel layouts.
- 🏞️【Match the Panel Setup to Your Circuit】 Connect compatible panels in series for higher nominal voltage or in parallel for higher nominal current. Output varies with sunlight and load; battery charging requires a suitable controller.
- It does not show that brushing or printing ink onto a rooftop panel will increase its output.
- It does not show that any ordinary fountain pen ink can be used to build a working DSSC with the reported performance.
- It does not provide a consumer-ready conversion method, retail product, or present-day buyer comparison.
The practical significance is narrower but still notable: a widely available class of carbon suspension was investigated as a possible counter-electrode material for a different kind of solar cell.
