To run an Infinity Fabric modpack with friends, every player must use Minecraft Java Edition, the exact Minecraft release named by the pack, the matching Fabric Loader, the required Fabric API build, and the same compatible mod files. First make the complete client pack work in a test world. Then install Fabric Server on a separate directory, copy only the server-compatible mods, accept Minecraft’s EULA, and give players a matching pack export.
Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
The pack’s manifest or documented server pack is the authority for its Minecraft and loader versions. Do not substitute a nearby game patch: Fabric notes that a mod working on one patch can fail on another.

What you need before installing Infinity Fabric
Infinity Fabric is a Fabric-based modpack, not a separate edition of Minecraft. You need a licensed Minecraft Java Edition installation; Bedrock Edition cannot load Fabric mods. Fabric Loader, Fabric API, the mod files and the Java runtime must all target the same Minecraft release.
Because the exact Infinity Fabric release determines these values, open the pack manifest or its server instructions before downloading anything. Record the following in a small checklist:
#1 Best Overall
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
- Pack release or version number.
- Minecraft version, including the full patch number.
- Fabric Loader version.
- Required Fabric API version.
- Whether the author supplies a dedicated server pack or server manifest.
- Mods marked client-only, server-only or required on both sides.
- Configuration files, resource packs or scripts that the pack expects.
Fabric’s documentation warns that a mod built for one patch may not work on another—for example, a file that worked on 1.21.8 may fail on 1.21.11. Treat every version filter in the pack manifest as a requirement, not a suggestion.
Choose a launcher and obtain the correct files
Modrinth App
In Modrinth App, create a new profile, choose Fabric as the loader, select the Minecraft version specified by Infinity Fabric, and add or import the pack’s content. The app can manage dependencies when the pack is distributed there. Check the resulting profile’s loader and game-version fields before launching.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsManual installation
A manual setup is useful when the author supplies a zip, a server manifest or files that a launcher does not import correctly. Install the Fabric Loader for the exact Minecraft version, then place the mod jars in the profile’s mods directory. Download files only from trusted distribution pages and verify both the loader filter and the Minecraft-version filter for every file.
Modrinth and CurseForge are common distribution sources. Fabric’s FAQ also lists Feed The Beast and Technic as sources for premade Fabric modpacks. A launcher download is not automatically a server package: use the pack’s documented server export when one exists.
Install and test the client pack first
The safest server workflow starts with a working client. The Fabric Wiki recommends installing and testing the client mods before creating the server, so dependency and crash problems are solved while you still have a graphical launcher and a test world.
Rank #2
- ULTIMATE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, five Bedrock add-ons, five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1000 Minecoins.

- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.

- Install Minecraft Java Edition and the Fabric Loader version recorded from the pack manifest.
- Create or import the Infinity Fabric profile in your launcher.
- Install the required Fabric API build and all pack mods. Keep the game version and loader filters visible while downloading.
- Launch the profile once. Let the launcher create the instance directories.
- Open a disposable test world. Exercise the features that matter to your group, such as world generation, dimensions, machines, commands or progression systems.
- Read the launcher log and crash report if the game stops. Fix missing dependencies, duplicate files, wrong loader types and wrong Minecraft patches before proceeding.
- Export or archive the known-good profile. Include the pack release, configuration files and resource-pack choices so you can reproduce it on another computer.
Do not copy a client directory wholesale to a server. Visual, menu, HUD, shader, replay and other interface-focused mods commonly belong only on clients. The pack author’s server list is the final decision for each jar.
Java versions required by Minecraft
Java is selected by Minecraft version, not by the word “Fabric.” For a headless server, use the Java release in this matrix. Future Minecraft releases can change these requirements, so re-check the official server guidance when Infinity Fabric updates.
| Minecraft release | Java runtime | Use this when |
|---|---|---|
| 1.16.5 or older | Java 8 | The pack manifest selects one of these releases. |
| 1.17.2 | Java 16 | The server is specifically based on 1.17.2. |
| 1.18.2 through 1.20.4 | Java 17 | The selected pack release falls in this range. |
| 1.20.5 or newer | Java 21 | The selected pack release is 1.20.5 or later. |
Verify the runtime before launching with java -version. If several Java versions are installed, configure the launcher or startup script to call the intended executable rather than whichever java happens to appear first in the system path.
Windows: create the Fabric server
Use a new, dedicated folder for the server. Keeping it separate from the client instance prevents client-only files from being loaded and makes backups and updates safer.
- Download and open the Fabric installer.
- Select the Server tab.
- Choose the exact Minecraft version from the Infinity Fabric manifest.
- Choose the matching Fabric Loader version.
- Select a dedicated, empty installation folder and download the server jar.
- Use the installer’s option to generate the startup scripts when available. The result normally includes a Windows
start.batand a Unix-stylestart.shor an equivalent generated command. - Open the folder and run the generated Windows script once. The first run creates the server files and normally stops until the EULA requirement is handled.
- Read Minecraft’s EULA, then edit
eula.txtas required by the server process. Start the server again. - Stop the server cleanly, copy the server-compatible Infinity Fabric jars into the server’s
modsdirectory, and start it again.
A generated command often uses memory flags such as -Xms1024m -Xmx2048m. Those values are an example from the Fabric server guidance, not an Infinity Fabric capacity recommendation. Increase or decrease them only after observing the actual pack and player count; do not allocate all physical memory to Java.

Keep the Windows folder manageable
- Keep
mods, config, world folders, logs and the startup script inside the server directory. - Do not place shader loaders, minimaps, menu replacements or other client-only jars in the server’s
modsfolder unless the pack explicitly classifies them as server-compatible. - Back up the world and configuration files while the server is stopped, or use a backup method that guarantees a consistent snapshot.
Linux or VPS: headless Fabric setup
A VPS or Linux machine has no graphical launcher, so install the Java runtime that matches the matrix above and the download tools needed to obtain the installer or server files. The same version discipline applies: the Minecraft release, Fabric Loader, Fabric API and mods must agree.
- Create a dedicated account or directory for the server and restrict access to the files.
- Install the required Java runtime and confirm it with
java -version. - Install the system’s download tools, then obtain the Fabric installer or the pack author’s server package from a trusted source.
- Run the Fabric installer in server mode, selecting the exact Minecraft and loader versions. Choose the new server directory.
- Launch the generated command once. This creates
eula.txt,server.properties, the logs directory and other initial files. - Review the EULA and set the value required by Minecraft’s server process, then launch again.
- Stop the process cleanly and copy only the server-compatible mod jars and the pack’s required configuration files into the directory.
- Run the generated command in a terminal multiplexer or service manager so the server continues after you disconnect from SSH. Monitor the console and
logs/latest.log.
A typical Java invocation resembles java -Xms1024m -Xmx2048m -jar server.jar nogui, but use the command generated for your Fabric installation when it differs. The memory flags are starting examples, not tested Infinity Fabric requirements.
Network and access decisions
Self-hosting exposes a machine and its configured game port to the network; a rented host usually supplies an always-on connection and a control panel. Whichever route you choose, use an allowlist for a private friends’ server, keep the operating system and Java runtime updated, and make restorable backups before changing mods or world-generation settings.
Copy the right mods to the server
There are three practical categories:
- Required on both sides: gameplay, world-generation and content mods that the pack marks as shared.
- Server-only: administration or performance components that the pack explicitly documents for the server.
- Client-only: visual, interface, shader, replay and menu components that should remain in each player’s client profile.
Most Fabric mods also require Fabric API, and the API must target the same Minecraft version as the pack. Put the required API jar in the server’s mods directory as well as in each client profile. A client export may contain jars that make sense only with a graphical game; do not assume it is server-ready.
Recommended Free Tools
After copying files, start the server and inspect the log for dependency messages. A missing-class error usually identifies the absent dependency or the wrong version. Install the dependency named by the mod, using the same loader and Minecraft-version filters, then restart.

Make every player’s installation identical
Players can join reliably only when the client and server agree on the pack release and the required shared files. Distribute a launcher profile or a server-approved pack export instead of asking friends to assemble jars one by one.
- Use the same Minecraft version, including the patch number.
- Use the same Fabric Loader version.
- Use the same Fabric API version.
- Use the same shared mod versions and pack configuration files.
- Keep client-only additions on clients and out of the server.
- When the pack updates, update the server and every client as one controlled change.
If a player can launch but cannot join, compare the two mods directories and the relevant config files. A successful local client launch does not prove that its complete directory is valid for a dedicated server.
Choosing self-hosting or rented hosting
No universal RAM, CPU, bandwidth or player-count figure has been established for Infinity Fabric. The pack’s world-generation cost, loaded chunks, automation and number of simultaneous players determine the requirement. Start with a controlled test using the actual pack, then adjust memory and hardware while watching startup time, tick behavior and log warnings.

| Consideration | Self-hosted machine | Rented Fabric-capable host |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Full control of Java, files, scripts and operating-system settings. | Depends on the host’s panel and plan; verify Java-version selection and custom-jar access. |
| Setup effort | You install Fabric, configure networking, secure the machine and maintain backups. | The provider may automate installation, but you still supply the correct pack and diagnose mod errors. |
| Uptime and access | Limited by your machine, power and connection. | Usually designed for continuous access; confirm the provider’s actual service terms. |
| Modpack support | Any compatible server files can be installed if your system can run them. | Check that custom Fabric packs, file access and the required Java release are supported. |
| Latency | Players connect to your home or office network. | Choose a location close to the majority of players. |
| Recurring cost | Electricity, hardware and network costs are yours; no universal amount is established here. | Monthly pricing varies by provider and plan; compare it directly with the control you need. |
For a small private group, either model can work. The decisive checks are Fabric support, Java-version control, complete file access, backup tooling, location and whether the host permits the exact server pack.
Troubleshoot the failures that matter most
The client crashes at launch
- Confirm the Minecraft patch against the Infinity Fabric manifest.
- Confirm Fabric Loader and Fabric API versions.
- Run the Java version required for that Minecraft release.
- Remove duplicate or stale jars and read the first useful error in the crash report.
A missing-class or dependency error appears
Install the dependency named in the error, making sure it targets the same loader and Minecraft version. If the dependency is present, check for an incompatible patch or duplicate version.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
The server starts but a player cannot join
Compare the client and server shared-mod lists, Fabric Loader, Fabric API and pack release. Remove client-only jars from the server, and ensure the player did not retain an older configuration file.
The world behaves differently between players
Confirm that everyone uses the same pack release and configuration files. World-generation and content mods must be consistent before a new world is created; changing them later can alter or damage existing terrain.

Use the headless procedure: install the required Java runtime and download tools, run the generated server command, accept the EULA through the server files, and diagnose issues from the console and log files rather than expecting a launcher window.
The server stops after an update
Restore the previous server directory and world backup, then test the new pack in a separate copy. Update the server and clients together only after the new client profile launches and a disposable world loads successfully.
A repeatable update and recovery routine
- Record the current pack, Minecraft, Fabric Loader, Fabric API and Java versions.
- Back up the world,
configdirectory, server properties and startup scripts. - Install the new client profile beside the old one and test it in a disposable world.
- Read the pack’s changelog or server manifest for removed, renamed or server-only mods.
- Copy the new server files into a separate server directory rather than overwriting the working installation.
- Start the new server without exposing it to players, inspect the logs and verify a test connection.
- Give players the same tested export and keep the old server backup until the new world has been used successfully.
This staged approach makes a bad dependency, Java mismatch or client-only jar reversible instead of turning an update into an irrecoverable world change.
Bottom line
Install and validate Infinity Fabric on a Minecraft Java client first, then reproduce its exact Minecraft and Fabric versions on a clean dedicated server. Match Java to the Minecraft release, include Fabric API and every documented shared dependency, exclude client-only files, and distribute one consistent pack to every player. When something fails, compare versions and logs before changing memory or replacing random mods.
