For rice you cook most days, a dedicated induction-heating (IH) rice cooker is usually the better fit if you want rice-focused programs and automatic keep-warm. An electric pressure multicooker makes more sense if you also want one appliance for pressure-cooked meals and are willing to follow rice-specific timing and pressure-release instructions. The available manufacturer sources do not establish a universal winner for rice texture, speed, or value.
What is the difference?
An induction rice cooker is built around rice preparation. In Zojirushi’s description, the inner pan acts as a conductor in an IH system; the company says this allows high heat and fine adjustments. Those are manufacturer explanations of the technology, not independent proof that every IH cooker produces better rice than a pressure cooker. Zojirushi’s rice-cooker technology guide explains the distinctions among IH, micom, pressure-IH, and conventional heating.

An electric pressure multicooker cooks rice in a sealed vessel under pressure. The recipe specifies the pressure setting, cook time, and release method, which can differ by rice variety. For example, Instant Pot’s jasmine rice recipe calls for three minutes at pressure followed by ten minutes of natural release, while its brown rice recipe specifies 25 minutes at high pressure. These are recipe-specific directions, not universal timings for every model or rice.

A pressure-induction rice cooker is a third option, combining rice-focused programs with pressure and IH. Zojirushi’s NP-NWC10/18 is an example; it is not the same category as a conventional pressure multicooker.

Which is better for the way you cook rice?
Choose an induction rice cooker for frequent, rice-focused use
- You cook rice regularly and prefer a dedicated appliance with rice-specific menus.
- You want an automatic keep-warm function rather than managing rice immediately after cooking.
- You use varieties or settings supported by the model you are considering. For instance, Zojirushi lists brown- and GABA-brown-rice settings, automatic and extended keep-warm, and a delay timer for its NP-HCC10/18 IH rice cooker. Features vary by model.
Choose a pressure multicooker if versatility matters more
- You want the appliance for other pressure-cooking tasks as well as rice.
- You are comfortable checking the recipe for your specific rice type and following its pressure-release steps.
- You do not need the dedicated rice menus of a rice cooker. Instant Pot’s recipes show that jasmine, brown, and basmati rice can be prepared using pressure-cooking functions, with instructions specific to the recipe and appliance.
Cooking rice in a pressure multicooker is a practical option, but the recipe examples do not show that it is faster or better for rice in every situation. Likewise, the cited manufacturer material does not provide independent side-by-side texture testing.
Check capacity, menus, and daily handling
Match capacity to your household’s batch size
Check the exact model’s capacity and how it defines a measuring cup. Zojirushi lists its NP-NWC10 at up to 5.5 cups (1.0 liter) and the NP-NWC18 at up to 10 cups (1.8 liters), using its approximately 180 mL cup for raw short-grain white rice. Capacity may differ for other grains. Do not compare those cup counts directly with another brand unless you have checked how that brand measures rice.

- Induction rice cooker and warmer. Electrical Rating : 1,230 Watts
- Multi-Menu cooking functions. Dimension: 10 inch W x 14 inch D x 8 inch H. Capacity: Up to 5.5 cups / 1.0 liter
- Automatic keep warm & extended keep warm keeps rice at the perfect serving temperature
- Healthy cooking options: brown rice, GABA brown rice and germinated brown rice. Delay timer (2 settings) , Electrical Rating - 120 volts
- Note-please ensure to measure rice in the cup that comes along with the product only. Troubleshoot-sparks by the plug when plugging or unplugging the power plug from the electrical outlet, this is common in rice cookers and does not indicate malfunction
Compare the settings you will actually use
Look for programs matching your usual rice and grain types, plus the keep-warm behavior you want. The cited IH and pressure-IH models have different menu and keep-warm features, so confirm them on the model’s product page rather than assuming every induction cooker offers the same settings.
Consider sealing, release, and cleaning
A pressure multicooker involves sealing the lid and using the specified pressure-release method. Follow the exact appliance manual and wait for the cooker to indicate it is safe before opening. For a dedicated cooker, check the manual for care of the inner pan and removable lid. Zojirushi says its cooker parts and accessories are not dishwasher safe and advises having the cooker’s model number when ordering parts; see its rice cooker FAQ.

- Versatile Machine: White, sushi, jasmine, sweet and porridge settings

Pressure-cooker safety matters
Use the instructions for your exact cooker, rice type, pressure setting, and release method. Make sure the lid and pressure release are set as directed, and do not open the appliance until it indicates that it is safe. Zojirushi’s manual for a pressure-induction model warns that incorrect handling during pressure cooking or self-cleaning can cause boil-over, burns, or injury. Those warnings apply to the covered appliance; controls and procedures can differ among models. Read the relevant manual before use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to make the choice
- Start with frequency: If rice is a regular staple and rice-specific automation is your priority, favor a dedicated IH rice cooker.
- List your usual rice: Confirm that the model supports the varieties and settings you use. For a pressure multicooker, find a recipe for that rice and follow its full timing and release instructions.
- Check batch size: Compare the model’s stated capacity with your normal cooked batch, accounting for differences in measuring-cup definitions.
- Decide whether you want a second appliance: If you will use pressure cooking for meals beyond rice, a multicooker may earn its counter space. If rice-focused functions matter most, compare dedicated models.
- Read the operating and care instructions: Confirm pressure-release steps or, for a rice cooker, pan and lid cleaning requirements before buying.
If you want rice-focused features and pressure cooking together, consider pressure-induction rice cookers as a separate category. Zojirushi’s NP-NWC10/18 combines pressure and IH and lists multiple rice and grain settings; check its specifications and instructions against your needs rather than treating it as a standard pressure multicooker.
