Incus vs. PGSTY SILO and MinIO: Which Is Right for Self-Hosted Object Storage?

Incus manages S3 buckets within its storage pools; PGSTY SILO is a standalone MinIO-fork server. The right choice depends on your operating model and availability needs.

The choice comes down to architecture: Incus manages S3-accessible buckets as part of its storage-pool system, while PGSTY SILO is a standalone object-storage server forked from MinIO. Choose Incus when you want buckets managed within an existing Incus environment; consider SILO when you need a distinct S3-compatible service. If you need clustered availability, Incus’s local buckets are not replicated—its documentation points to Ceph Object for that use case.

These are different kinds of object-storage options

Incus provides buckets as resources associated with storage pools. Applications connect to them through an S3 endpoint and credentials; a bucket is not an instance disk mounted into a container or virtual machine. See the Incus storage-bucket documentation.

PGSTY SILO, by contrast, is a separately operated object-storage server. PGSTY describes it as a community-maintained fork of MinIO, not as a feature within an infrastructure manager. That makes this comparison primarily about operating model and fit, not a feature-for-feature contest. SILO’s identity and relationship to MinIO are described in its project repository.

What Incus buckets offer—and what they depend on

Storage pools and S3 access

Incus documents buckets on local dir, btrfs, lvm, and zfs pools, as well as remote cephobject pools. For local pool drivers, the operator must configure core.storage_buckets_address to expose the S3 endpoint. Backend-specific options differ, so consult the reference for the chosen driver rather than assuming every pool offers identical quota or operational behavior. Incus’s storage-driver overview lists supported drivers and links to their details.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Each bucket can have one or more access-key pairs. Incus documents credential roles including admin and read-only; when no role is specified, the documented default is read-only. The exact bucket settings available depend on the backend. The bucket guide covers creating and accessing buckets.

Cluster availability is the key limitation

Incus distinguishes local buckets from Ceph Object buckets. A local bucket belongs to the member where it was created, its data is not replicated across the cluster, and S3 requests go through the server holding it. Having an Incus cluster does not, by itself, make local bucket data highly available.

For highly available object storage in an Incus cluster, the project points to Ceph Object: its S3 API can be reached through any cluster member. See the Incus clustering documentation before choosing a topology.

What SILO shares with MinIO—and what compatibility does not guarantee

SILO targets common S3 APIs, SigV4 authentication, SDK integrations, object layouts, and MinIO-associated configuration and identifiers. Its own compatibility documentation calls SILO a “conditional drop-in replacement.” In practical terms, S3 compatibility is not a promise that every MinIO deployment can be moved unchanged.

Before migrating, check the target SILO release for deployment differences, authorization behavior, replicated state, and upgrade or rollback conditions. SILO’s compatibility page describes those qualifications. The relationship is a fork with compatibility targets; claims about MinIO’s current distribution, maintenance, feature availability, or security status should be verified against current MinIO sources rather than inferred from SILO’s statements.

SILO documents physical, virtualized, and container-hosted deployment paths. Its installation guidance emphasizes selecting a tested deployment path and planning storage, failure domains, upgrades, and recovery for the chosen topology. Review the SILO installation documentation for the current options; package, image, and component details can change over time.

Incus buckets vs. SILO and MinIO: the practical differences

Decision Incus buckets PGSTY SILO / MinIO lineage
Operating model Buckets managed as storage-pool resources within Incus. A separately operated S3-compatible object-storage server.
Best infrastructure fit An environment already using Incus storage and administration. A workload that needs an independent object-storage service and suits SILO’s deployment model.
Cluster behavior Local bucket data is not replicated. Incus documents Ceph Object as the high-availability direction. Depends on the selected SILO topology, failure domains, and recovery plan; S3 compatibility alone does not establish resilience.
MinIO migration Not a MinIO-fork migration path; assess how applications and operations would fit Incus’s bucket model. Compatibility is conditional; validate authorization, deployment, replicated state, and version-specific behavior.
License Check the Incus project’s applicable license separately if it matters to your deployment. SILO’s repository identifies its license as AGPL-3.0-or-later. Seek deployment-specific legal advice if needed.
Comparative performance No neutral apples-to-apples benchmark identified. No neutral apples-to-apples benchmark identified.

SILO’s stated license is listed in the repository license file. The table does not imply equivalent performance: the available documentation does not establish a winner in throughput, latency, scale, or reliability.

How to choose for your deployment

Choose Incus buckets when the Incus control plane is the point

  • Your services already run in an Incus environment, and you want object buckets administered alongside its storage pools.
  • You can select a backend that supports the bucket behavior your workload needs and configure the S3 endpoint appropriately.
  • For a clustered deployment, either local-bucket non-replication is acceptable or you plan to use Ceph Object for highly available object storage.

Evaluate SILO when object storage should be its own service

  • You want an S3-compatible server operated separately from Incus.
  • You are evaluating a MinIO-related migration and can test your actual SDKs, credentials, authorization rules, deployment, and replicated state against the target SILO release.
  • You can design and validate the storage topology, failure domains, upgrade path, and recovery process rather than relying on protocol compatibility as a resilience guarantee.

Test the workload, not just the API label

There is no neutral published comparison here that establishes which option is faster or more reliable. Benchmark your own application pattern and topology if performance is decisive. Include the network path, chosen storage backend, concurrency, object sizes, failure behavior, and recovery process in that evaluation; do not treat an S3-compatible label as a performance or availability result.

Bottom line

Incus is the natural fit for buckets managed within an Incus storage environment, with a crucial distinction between non-replicated local buckets and Ceph Object for clustered availability. SILO is the option to assess when you want a standalone server in the MinIO compatibility lineage—but treat migration as conditional and validate it against your deployment and target release.
