Inclusive Design in Technology: How to Build for More People

Inclusive design starts by learning from people often missed by default design. It can make technology usable in more situations, but it does not replace accessibility standards or testing.

Inclusive design makes technology more useful by starting with people and situations that default designs often overlook. Learning from people with different abilities and circumstances can reveal barriers, then lead to more ways to participate. A change that addresses one barrier may also help in other contexts—but no single feature works for everyone, and inclusive design does not replace accessibility standards or disability-specific testing.

What inclusive design means

Microsoft describes inclusive design as a method that considers the full range of human diversity and includes people with varied perspectives in the design process. The point is not to create one universal interface that suits everyone. It is to learn where a product excludes people and make participation possible in more ways.

Microsoft Learn offers a useful framing: “We define disability as a mismatch between the needs of the individual and the service, product or environment offered. Anyone can experience a disability. It is a common human trait to be excluded.” That perspective recognizes that a mismatch can be permanent, temporary, or situational: a person may have a disability, recover from an injury, or struggle to hear audio in a noisy place.

Inclusive design is not a guarantee that each feature will benefit every user. It is an approach to finding barriers and broadening who can use a product and in what circumstances.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How addressing one barrier can help in other situations

A feature developed for a specific need can prove useful to people outside that original group. Microsoft Learn points to curb cuts, remote controls, and easy-fastening shoes as examples of accommodations that became broadly useful. A similar pattern is possible in software when accessible options are part of core interactions and visual systems.

Live Captions

Microsoft lists Live Captions among products developed using its inclusive design toolkits. Captions can support people who are deaf or hard of hearing; they may also be useful when audio cannot be played or understood in a particular setting. This illustrates the potential for broader usefulness, not independent proof that every user benefits or that the feature alone caused a measured outcome. Microsoft also highlights Copilot and Mesh avatars as examples on its Inclusive Design examples and resources page.

Why context matters

People use technology amid changing conditions: background noise, a small screen, temporary injury, or limited bandwidth can all affect whether an interaction works. Designing for a wider range of needs and contexts can give users alternatives when the default path is unavailable. That does not mean one accommodation solves every barrier; alternatives need to be evaluated in the situations they are meant to support.

Inclusive design, accessibility, and usability are related—but different

W3C’s Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) explains that accessibility, usability, and inclusion overlap and are most effective when addressed together. They are not synonyms:

  • Accessibility focuses on equitable access for people with disabilities: being able to perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with websites and tools, and contribute without barriers.
  • Usability concerns whether people can use a product effectively and efficiently and whether they are satisfied with the experience.
  • Inclusion is broader. Along with disability, it can involve access to hardware, software, and connectivity, as well as digital skills and economic circumstances.

An inclusive design process does not, by itself, demonstrate conformance to WCAG or other applicable accessibility requirements. Products still need disability-specific evaluation and any relevant standards-based checks.

Make accessibility part of product quality from the start

Microsoft Learn says accessibility should be treated as an engineering and product-quality concern throughout the product lifecycle, not as a final compliance task. That principle makes it easier to consider access while teams are shaping requirements, interactions, and visual systems, rather than discovering barriers only after core decisions are difficult to change.

This is a useful pattern, not a single mandatory process prescribed for every product.

What the evidence can—and cannot—say

Microsoft Learn reports that a Forrester Research study commissioned by Microsoft in 2003–2004 found 57 percent of U.S. computer users ages 18 to 64 could benefit from assistive technology. This is a historical finding about that population and period, reported by Microsoft Learn; it is not a current estimate, a global figure, or a measure of the share of today’s users who need any particular feature.

W3C WAI describes possible organizational benefits of digital accessibility, including innovation, brand, market reach, and reduced legal risk. These are potential considerations, not guaranteed returns or a universal return-on-investment figure. Legal obligations also depend on jurisdiction and should be checked against current local requirements.
