Yes. Researchers have used spectroscopy to distinguish the sex of chicken embryos before hatching by measuring light signals from blood vessels or sex-linked features. But “spectroscopy” covers several different experimental methods: their reported accuracy, measurement day and suitability for different breeds are not interchangeable, and the results do not establish that a universally reliable hatchery system is available.
How spectroscopy can sex an egg
Spectroscopy identifies patterns in light interacting with a sample. For in-egg sexing, the sample is the developing embryo, measured without opening the egg in the approaches described here. The technique does not read sex directly; it classifies optical signals associated with biological differences.

Raman spectroscopy: signals from blood vessels
A 2016 study used Raman spectroscopy, which analyzes light scattered by molecular constituents. Researchers measured spectra from blood circulating in extraembryonic vessels and reported contactless sex determination at incubation day 3.5, with 90% accuracy. This is a result from that study’s method and conditions, not a general performance guarantee. Read the study record.
Visible-NIR spectroscopy: signals linked to feather color
A 2022 study illuminated eggs from ISA Brown chickens and measured the returning visible-near-infrared signal. Its approach relied on sex-specific down-feather color traits in the studied brown layer lines; it should not be assumed to transfer to breeds without those traits. Read the Poultry Science study.

Hyperspectral imaging: many wavelengths plus image analysis
Hyperspectral imaging captures optical information across many wavelengths and can be paired with image or texture analysis. A 2022 Wageningen University & Research conference abstract describes it as a possible route toward commercial use, while identifying accuracy, scaling and cross-breed generalization as challenges. The abstract is research-stage context, not evidence of a system currently deployed in hatcheries. Read the conference abstract.
When can an egg be sexed, and how accurate are the reported results?
Measurement day matters: the day-3.5 Raman result and the later visible-NIR results come from different methods, samples and conditions. The figures below should be read within each study, not as a direct ranking of competing systems.

| Study and method | Sample or scope stated | Reported result |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 Raman spectroscopy | Blood spectra from extraembryonic vessels; study record does not state sample size here | 90% accuracy at incubation day 3.5 |
| 2022 visible-NIR spectroscopy | Two independent experiments, each using 600 ISA Brown eggs | Prediction accuracy: 86.49% on day 12, 97.78% on day 13 and 99.52% on day 14 |
| 2022 visible-NIR with day-0 eggshell correction | ISA Brown study; correction applied to account for eggshell signal | 99.05% prediction on day 13; 94.62% on day 18 |
| 2022 visible-NIR reduced spectral range | 749–861 nm range in the study setup | 98.46% correct classification |
| 2024 handheld NIR with LDA/SVM approaches | Handheld device measuring 900–1600 nm | 62–68% classification of male versus female embryos; authors said this was insufficient for industrial in-ovo sexing |
The visible-NIR results are specific to the study’s setup and ISA Brown batches. The authors discussed stronger light attenuation as the embryo grows as a factor in the lower day-18 result. The 2024 study is a useful counterpoint to high experimental results: a handheld device using a different approach did not reach industrially adequate classification. Read the 2024 study.

- They establish feasibility in defined experiments. Multiple optical approaches have reported sex classification before hatching.
- They do not establish one best method for every egg. Incubation day, signal type, breed, shell and validation conditions differ among studies.
- They do not establish broad hatchery performance. High accuracy in a defined sample is not proof of repeatability at industrial throughput or across breeds. Scaling and generalization remain stated challenges.
- They do not establish consumer use. The evidence concerns specialized research methods and does not show that a consumer spectrometer, egg candler or ordinary incubator can determine embryo sex.
A 2023 review gives broader context on in-ovo sexing approaches and their development, but it does not remove the need to evaluate each optical method on its own evidence. Read the review.

What to check when evaluating an in-egg spectroscopy claim
A headline accuracy figure is meaningful only alongside the conditions that produced it. For a technology claim or proposed system, check:
- Optical method: Raman, visible/NIR point spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging measure and analyze different signals.
- Timing: Identify the incubation day of measurement; results from different developmental stages are not directly interchangeable.
- Breed and egg characteristics: Ask whether the signal depends on traits such as sex-linked feather color and whether the tested lines match the intended flock.
- Validation: Look for the number of eggs, independent batches or experiments, and how predictions were checked.
- Operational outcomes: Determine whether hatchability, egg damage and performance at hatchery scale were assessed; the cited figures alone do not answer those questions.
- Deployment evidence: Distinguish a published experiment or conference abstract from demonstrated, repeatable commercial operation.
Commercial availability and legal requirements
The cited studies and conference abstract establish research results and challenges, not the current commercial deployment landscape. They also do not establish current legal requirements in any particular jurisdiction. Anyone assessing an operating hatchery or compliance question needs current, jurisdiction-specific verification rather than relying on historical references in research literature.
