Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Start with Settings > Battery before changing anything. Identify whether the drain comes from screen use, a specific app, background activity, notifications, weak cellular signal, heat, an iPadOS update, or a worn battery. Then target that cause: lower brightness, shorten Auto-Lock, use Wi‑Fi, restrict unnecessary background work, enable Low Power Mode when needed, keep the iPad cool, and check Battery Health on supported models.
Find what is draining the iPad
Open Settings > Battery. On iPadOS 26 or later, Daily Usage comparisons and Insights may show whether today is unusually heavy and whether update or setup tasks are still running. Under App and System Activity, use View All Battery Usage to inspect individual apps and system processes. Apple documents these diagnostics at its iPad battery support page.

| Battery entry | What it usually means | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| On Screen | The app was actively displayed. High use may simply reflect games, video, video calls, or long screen-on time. | Lower brightness, shorten Auto-Lock, and reduce demanding foreground use. |
| Background Activity | The app worked while not visibly open, such as syncing, refreshing, downloading, or using location. | Review Background App Refresh, location permission, syncing, and the app’s own settings. |
| Notifications | Alerts may have repeatedly woken the display. | Turn off or summarize low-priority notifications. |
| No Mobile Coverage or Low Signal | A cellular iPad may use extra power searching for service. | Use Wi‑Fi, move to a stronger signal, or use Airplane Mode when offline use is sufficient. |
| Connected to Charger | The app was used while charging; it does not necessarily indicate a fault. | Reduce intensive use if charging is slow or the iPad is hot. |
A high-ranking app is not automatically defective. First determine whether its time was on screen, in the background, notification-related, or network-related. If Battery shows an ongoing update or device-setup Insight, allow that work to finish before judging normal battery performance.

Reduce screen power
- Lower brightness from Control Center or Settings > Display & Brightness.
- Enable Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness.
- Open Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and choose a shorter period that suits you.
Brightness, screen-on time, content, ambient light, and iPad model determine the result, so there is no universal percentage saving. On ProMotion iPads, refresh rate also affects consumption. Low Power Mode limits supported ProMotion displays to 60 Hz, so scrolling and animations can feel less fluid.

Use Wi‑Fi and avoid weak cellular coverage
Wi‑Fi generally uses less power than cellular data, although signal strength and workload matter. Prefer a strong connection on cellular models. If you will be offline for an extended period, turn on Airplane Mode; this prevents continuous network searching. Do not routinely disable Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth merely to save power: Apple says they use minimal battery when not connected, and turning them off removes features.
Cut unnecessary background work
- Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and disable it globally or only for apps that do not need updates when closed.
- Review Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Change unnecessary apps to Never, Ask Next Time, or While Using, as appropriate.
- Use Settings > Notifications to remove alerts that do not matter. Fewer alerts means fewer display wake-ups.
- Review mail and other account-fetch schedules, and pause unneeded cloud syncing or media downloads when the battery is critical.
These restrictions can delay notifications, navigation, syncing, smart-home updates, or downloads. Apply them selectively. Repeatedly force-quitting every app is not a reliable battery fix and can create extra work when apps reopen.
Use Low Power Mode when runtime matters most
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Low Power Mode and turn it on.
Low Power Mode reduces or pauses some power-consuming behavior, including Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and certain visual effects. It can limit ProMotion to 60 Hz. Background tasks may be delayed and performance or animation smoothness may change. It is useful before travel, a flight, class, a long meeting, outdoor work, or whenever the battery is low. It is a runtime mode, not a way to restore a chemically worn battery.

Battery drain after an iPadOS update
If the problem began immediately after an update, check Settings > Battery for an update or setup Insight. Indexing, migration, and other background work can temporarily increase battery use and heat. Keep the iPad connected to power and Wi‑Fi when convenient, then use it normally for several days before deciding the update caused permanent drain. Restart only when the iPad is behaving abnormally; restarting is not a guaranteed battery cure. Persistent severe drain, abnormal heat, shutdowns, or a Service warning warrants escalation.
Protect long-term battery lifespan
Battery life means hours between charges. Battery lifespan means how long the battery retains useful capacity. Settings can improve the first; heat and charging habits influence the second.

Keep the iPad cool
Apple gives an ideal ambient operating range of approximately 62°–72°F (16°–22°C) and warns that using or charging above 95°F (35°C) can permanently reduce lifespan. Avoid direct sun, hot cars, poor ventilation, and intensive gaming while charging. If a case traps heat during charging, remove it temporarily. Cold can temporarily reduce runtime or pause charging; charging resumes when the battery returns to a suitable temperature. See Apple’s battery and charging guidance.

Overnight charging is safe because iPad manages charging and slows as it approaches full. Partial charging is fine; do not routinely drain the battery to zero. A charge cycle is accumulated when you consume a total of 100% of capacity, not necessarily in one session. Apple says iPad batteries are designed to retain approximately 80% of original capacity after 1,000 complete cycles, depending on product, use, and charging conditions.
Use 80% Limit on supported models
On iPad Pro M4 and later, iPad Air M2 and later, iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad (A16), open Settings > Battery > Battery Health > 80% Limit. Charging normally stops at about 80% and resumes near 75%. The iPad may occasionally charge to 100% to keep its estimate accurate. You can temporarily override the limit until the following morning or switch back to a 100% limit; see Apple’s iPadOS 26 instructions.

Choose 80% Limit for a desk iPad, kiosk, point-of-sale device, or one that remains plugged in for long periods. Leave it off when maximum runtime away from a charger is more important. It reduces long-term wear; it does not provide more hours from today’s 80% charge.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When charging is slow or the battery falls while plugged in
iPad may show Slow Charger in Settings > Battery when the power source is not optimal. Apple notes that a wired source providing 7.5 watts or less can charge slowly. Model, adapter, cable, port, and power source all affect charging, so there is no single best wattage for every iPad.
Recommended Free Tools
- Try a known-good cable, adapter, and wall outlet.
- Stop intensive games or video calls temporarily; active use can consume most incoming power.
- Improve ventilation and remove direct heat.
- A computer that is turned off may not charge the iPad. Use an awake computer with an adequate port, or a wall adapter.
- Do not charge through a keyboard unless its USB port is designed to provide high power.
Charging guidance is in Apple’s iPad charging guide.
Check Battery Health and decide when service is needed
Battery Health controls are model-dependent. Apple currently lists iPad Pro M4 and later, iPad Air M2 and later, iPad mini A17 Pro, and iPad A16 as models that expose capacity information at Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Older iPads may not show the same controls; absence of the menu does not by itself diagnose a fault. Model details are listed in Apple’s battery support article.
Low maximum capacity makes shorter runtime expected, but a Service indication is more significant than one bad day. Settings cannot restore lost chemical capacity. Seek Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for a sealed iPad, especially if you see persistent abnormal heat, swelling, unexpected shutdowns, or severe drain. Do not open the device yourself.
