Each takes a different route. For a VirtualBox VM, export it as an OVA and import that package; open an existing VMX directly; or create a new VM around an existing VMDK if its configuration is missing.
Choose the workflow that matches your files

Menu names and available options can vary by Workstation and VirtualBox release. The paths below are examples; check the menus in the versions installed on your computer.

Import a VirtualBox VM by exporting an OVA
- Shut down the VM in VirtualBox. If it is suspended, resume it first, then shut it down cleanly.
- Export the appliance. In VirtualBox, choose File > Export Appliance, select the VM, choose OVA as the archive format, and export the file. Export time depends on the size of the VM’s virtual disk.
- Import the OVA into Workstation. Use Workstation’s import/open workflow for the OVA package. Exact menu wording depends on your release.
- Replace the guest integration tools. In the imported guest, remove VirtualBox Guest Additions and restart it; then install VMware Tools.
If Workstation reports that the OVA failed OVF specification conformance or virtual-hardware compliance checks, Broadcom documents choosing “Retry with lower specifications” as a first step. It is not a guarantee that every package or Workstation version will import successfully.
Open an existing Workstation VMX
If the VM folder contains a .vmx file, open Workstation and choose File > Open, then select that file. Broadcom documents this route in an example involving a Workstation Pro 17.5.1 issue; its example proceeds by choosing a new VM name or location. That scenario illustrates how to open a VMX, but should not be taken as a description of every current import case.

Rebuild the VM configuration around a VMDK
When the VMX is absent or damaged but the virtual disk remains, create a new VM in Workstation and select the option to use an existing virtual disk. Choose the appropriate VMDK and leave any child VMDK files alongside it; those files may be part of the disk’s structure.
Attaching an existing disk can lock it for use by the new VM. If the original VM must keep using that disk, copy the disk files first and attach the copy instead. Broadcom’s instructions describe the existing-disk workflow in its VMDK guidance.

Move or copy a native Workstation VM
If you are only changing the folder or drive for a native Workstation VM, copying its VM folder while the VM is powered off may be simpler than converting or importing it. A copy made while the VM is powered on or suspended may fail to boot.

- Moved It: retains the VM identity and settings.
- Copied It: generates a new UUID and MAC address to avoid identity conflicts between the original and the copy.

Review the guest operating system selection, virtual hardware compatibility, memory, processors, disk capacity, and networking. The right configuration depends on the host computer, guest OS, and what you intend to run; there are no universal resource values for every VM. Broadcom’s Workstation VM creation guidance covers these configuration areas, but lists older product generations, so verify the exact controls in your installed release.
