A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11“iMovie won’t export” can mean several different problems: rendering stops, the app crashes, the finished file is saved somewhere unexpected, or a website rejects a perfectly good video. The quickest low-risk test is to preserve the project, export a duplicate or short section at a lower resolution, and save it to local storage. That result tells you whether the cause is the project, a media item, available space, the destination, or iMovie itself.
Use the Mac steps if you edit on macOS; use the iPhone or iPad steps for iOS and iPadOS. Apple’s controls and project-sharing rules are different on each platform.
Identify the symptom before changing anything
Write down the device model, macOS/iOS/iPadOS version, iMovie version, project length and resolution, source-media location, and the exact alert. Then match the symptom to the likely investigation:
| What happens | Most useful first checks |
|---|---|
| Share or export is unavailable | Confirm that a project is open and that you are choosing the finished-video command, not project sharing. |
| Export stops at 0% or fails immediately | Restart, update iMovie, choose local storage, lower the resolution, and test a new project. |
| It freezes at the same percentage | Look for a clip, title, transition, effect, or audio item near that point; isolate the timeline. |
| Export finishes but no file is visible | Check the selected folder, Photos, Files, and the cloud service actually chosen as the destination. |
| The file exists but will not play or upload | Test playback locally, then check container, codec, resolution, and the receiving service’s requirements. |
| The result is an iMovie project instead of a movie | You selected Export Project, which preserves editing data rather than creating a normal playable video. |
Protect the project first
On Mac
- Quit iMovie.
- Back up the iMovie library, original media, and the iMovie app before resetting, reinstalling, moving a library, or deleting clips. Apple explicitly recommends this precaution in its troubleshooting sequence: Apple’s Mac iMovie troubleshooting guide.
- Work on a duplicate library or duplicate project whenever possible. Do not edit the only copy while diagnosing the failure.
On iPhone or iPad
- Duplicate or export the project if the app allows it.
- Confirm that source videos and photos still exist in Photos or Files.
- Make sure source media that is visible through iCloud is available locally; a thumbnail does not prove that the full original is downloaded.
- Check available device storage. There is no universal “required” free-space number: the working space varies with duration, resolution, frame rate, effects, and compression.
Use the correct export command
Mac: create a finished movie
- Open the movie, trailer, or clip in the browser.
- Choose File > Share > File.
- Choose the resolution, quality, and compression options.
- Click Next, select a folder on the internal drive (the Desktop is a useful test), and click Save.
iMovie for Mac can export video and audio, audio only, and several resolutions. A compatible 4K project can be exported at its native resolution; 4K is not automatically unsupported. See Apple’s current workflow: Export a movie or clip in iMovie on Mac.

iPhone and iPad: save a playable video
- Open the project and tap Done if you are in the editor.
- Tap the Share button.
- Tap Options when you need to change resolution or format.
- Choose Save Video for Photos, or Save to Files for local or enabled cloud storage. AirDrop and other available destinations are also valid tests.
Apple documents these destinations and options here: Share your movie from iMovie on iPhone or iPad.
When you need an editable project
In the Projects browser, tap Share and choose Export Project. This creates an editable iMovie project with its media; it is not a finished video that a normal player can open. Apple documents project sharing for iPad at the iPad guide and for iPhone at the iPhone guide. A newer iPhone/iPad iMovie version may create a project that an older Mac version cannot open, and Apple notes a Shared iPad limitation when sending projects to iMovie for macOS.

Fast, low-risk fixes
Restart and update
- Quit iMovie and restart the Mac, iPhone, or iPad.
- Disconnect cameras, USB drives, hubs, and other external devices temporarily.
- Install any iMovie update offered by the App Store.
- Retry with the project saved locally. On mobile, keeping the device connected to power is a sensible stability precaution during a long render, not a guarantee.
Apple’s Mac sequence specifically starts with restarting, disconnecting devices, checking normal behavior, and updating iMovie: Mac troubleshooting steps.
Export a smaller test
- Duplicate the project.
- Export a short section or the duplicate at 720p or 540p instead of 4K.
- Save to the Mac’s internal drive, Photos, or a local Files folder rather than directly to a cloud or removable destination.
- If it succeeds, increase resolution or quality one step at a time.
Lower resolution reduces file size and processing demand. Apple gives 540p as a practical social-media example and 360p as a text-messaging example, but those settings are not universal requirements: Apple’s compression guidance.

If the export freezes at one point
A repeatable stopping percentage often implicates one timeline item rather than the basic export function. Suspects include a recently imported or third-party-camera clip, a partially downloaded iCloud asset, unusual HDR, frame-rate or variable-frame-rate footage, an oversized still image, a title, transition, effect, detached audio file, or media on a disconnected external drive.
Use a divide-and-test isolation method
- Duplicate the project.
- Remove or disable roughly half of the timeline and export the copy.
- If the copy works, the problem is in the removed half; if it fails, it is in the remaining half.
- Repeat the split until one clip or element is implicated.
- Re-download, re-import, or transcode that source and replace it. Keep the original until the replacement is verified.
This halving method is a practical diagnostic strategy, not a documented Apple procedure. Apple does recommend creating a test project and exporting it as a QuickTime video file; a new project that succeeds points toward the original project or its media: Apple’s Mac troubleshooting guide.

Mac-specific library and drive checks
Test the library on internal storage
- Quit iMovie.
- Copy the library to the Mac’s internal drive.
- Open the copied library and retry the export.
- Only after a verified backup should you investigate reformatting an external drive.
Apple flags iMovie libraries stored on Time Machine volumes and on unsupported formats such as ExFAT, FAT32, and NTFS. Its current guidance recommends APFS for an external drive used for an iMovie library and says to check the format with Finder’s Get Info: Apple’s storage requirements and troubleshooting. Reformatting erases the drive, so copy every library and other file elsewhere first.
Test whether iMovie itself is the problem
Create a new library and a small project from known-good clips, or use a built-in trailer template, then export it. If every new project fails, investigate app configuration, permissions, operating-system compatibility, storage, and connected hardware rather than repeatedly editing the original project.

iPhone and iPad checks
- Try Save Video to Photos, then Save to Files to a local folder. A cloud destination can be tested after a local result exists.
- Check Photos’ recent items and the Files app’s Recents and Browse sections; the file may have been saved under a different folder or name.
- Free space by removing or moving unneeded files, but do not assume a specific amount will solve every export.
- Confirm that source clips can be opened and downloaded locally. Replace a clip that remains unavailable or will not play outside iMovie.
- If a project must continue on a Mac, use Export Project rather than Save Video, and check the iMovie-version compatibility warning before transferring it.
When the movie exports but another app rejects it
Separate a rendering failure from a delivery-format problem. A file can export successfully and still be rejected because of its container (such as MOV versus MP4), the codec inside it, its resolution, audio format, or size.
Create an MP4 on a Mac
- Import the iPhone or iPad project into iMovie on Mac if necessary.
- Click the Share button and choose Export File.
- Choose Medium or Low quality, then 720p or 540p.
- Select the available compression option and save the file.
Apple documents this MP4-compatibility workflow here: Share your movie from iMovie. Do not describe iMovie as unable to export MP4 in every case; the Mac workflow supports it under these settings.
Reset or reinstall only after the safer tests
Apple’s Mac sequence includes resetting iMovie and reinstalling it, but these are late-stage steps. Reinstalling can address an app-level problem; it will not repair a missing source file, a damaged project, or an unsupported drive format. Keep the backed-up library and media, and do not casually delete project data while removing the app. Follow the current commands and labels in Apple’s guide because they can change with macOS: iMovie troubleshooting.
When to rebuild or switch editors
Rebuild in iMovie
Start a new project, import known-good local copies, and recreate only the affected section when one project fails but test projects export. This often takes less time than repeatedly forcing a damaged timeline.
Use another editor when the deadline or requirements justify it
Move on when iMovie still fails after a clean test project, the source format cannot be processed reliably, or you need capabilities iMovie does not provide. Do not assume another application will automatically import every iMovie project; exporting finished media or re-importing original clips is often safer.
