Immersive Pixelmon Modpack Guide: Quests and Server Setup

A version-matched Pixelmon setup prevents most crashes and mod-rejection errors. This guide covers client installation, NeoForge and Java requirements, server creation, memory, world generation, custom quests, Research and multiplayer troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reliable way to run an immersive Pixelmon modpack is to lock the Minecraft version, Pixelmon build, Java runtime, mod loader and every sidemod before anyone connects. Use NeoForge for Pixelmon 9.3.0 and newer, allocate at least 4 GB of server memory (more for larger worlds), and make every player install an identical client profile. Quests are pack- and version-dependent: a modpack may provide a complete campaign such as PokeQuests’ custom Kanto storyline, while newer Pixelmon releases may present Research tasks instead of the older quest interface.

What an immersive Pixelmon setup requires

Pixelmon is a Java Edition mod. Bedrock Edition cannot run Forge-based Pixelmon mods; the Pixelmon installation guidance explicitly limits mod support to Java Edition. A working multiplayer setup has five parts that must agree:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Minecraft version: the exact game release used by the server.
  • Pixelmon version: the same build range selected for that Minecraft release.
  • Loader: NeoForge for Pixelmon 9.3.0 and later, or the Forge/NeoForge loader specified by the selected release.
  • Java runtime: Java 21 for Pixelmon 9.3.0 or newer, Java 17 for 9.2.0–9.2.10, and Java 8 for versions before 9.2.0.
  • Mod files and configuration: clients need the same Pixelmon jar, sidemods, dependencies and compatible configuration as the server.

If any one of these differs, the connection can fail with a mod-rejection message before the player reaches the world. Treat the server’s version profile as a single package rather than letting players install “the latest” components independently.

Choose a supported Minecraft and Pixelmon pair

The following ranges are listed in the current Pixelmon server-installation guidance. Select one row and keep it unchanged for the life of that world unless you have tested an upgrade and made a backup.

#1 Best Overall
Minecraft - Bedrock Edition PS4
  • Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
  • discover community creations in the new in-game store
  • access new mini games and game modes through servers
Minecraft Pixelmon builds listed Loader and Java guidance
1.21.1 9.3.0–9.3.13 NeoForge; Java 21 for Pixelmon 9.3.0 and newer
1.20.2 9.2.4–9.2.10 Use the loader specified for the selected build; Java 17
1.20.1 9.2.0–9.2.3 Use the loader specified for the selected build; Java 17
1.16.5 9.1.12 Use the loader specified for the selected build; Java 8 for releases before 9.2.0

The ranges are not interchangeable. A 1.21.1 client cannot join a 1.20.2 server, and a 9.3.x client cannot join a server running 9.2.x. Write the chosen pair at the top of your server notes and in the instructions you send to friends.

Install the client modpack

Install the client on every computer that will play. The exact launcher screens vary, but the order below prevents the most common mismatch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install Java Edition. Make sure the launcher is using the Java Edition profile, not a Bedrock installation.
  2. Pick the server’s pair. Record the Minecraft release and exact Pixelmon build before installing a loader.
  3. Install the matching loader. Pixelmon 9.3.0 and later require NeoForge. Older Pixelmon branches may require Forge or the loader named in that branch’s installation instructions.
  4. Point the launcher at the correct Java runtime. Select Java 21 for 9.3.x, Java 17 for 9.2.x, or Java 8 for releases before 9.2.0. Do not assume the launcher’s bundled runtime matches your chosen profile.
  5. Create a clean instance. Give the instance a recognizable name such as “Pixelmon 9.3.13 – 1.21.1” so it cannot be confused with another profile.
  6. Install Pixelmon and required dependencies. Put the server-approved Pixelmon jar and any required client-side files in that instance’s mods directory. Add sidemods only after checking that their Minecraft, loader and Pixelmon versions match.
  7. Set memory. The client guidance calls for at least 2 GB available and assignable RAM. Increase the allocation only when the computer has enough physical memory left for the operating system and other applications.
  8. Launch once offline. This creates the instance folders and exposes loader errors before you attempt a multiplayer connection.
  9. Distribute a manifest. Keep a list of every jar name and version, the Java version and the loader build. Give that list to every player, or distribute a launcher profile that reproduces it exactly.

Do not copy a client’s entire mods folder to the server without checking each file. Some mods are client-only, some are server-only and some require matching copies on both sides. The server’s approved list is the authority.

Set up the Pixelmon server

A small private server can run on a computer in your home. The official guidance recommends paid hosting for bigger servers where performance, stability and safety matter. Local hosting is best suited to players on the same network or to occasional sessions where the host computer can remain online.

1. Prepare the machine

  • Install the Java runtime required by the selected Pixelmon branch.
  • Create a new, dedicated server directory with enough free disk space for the world, logs and backups.
  • Allocate at least 4 GB of RAM to the server; the current guidance recommends more when the world, player count or added mods grow.
  • Keep the server directory separate from your client instances so a client update cannot overwrite server files.

2. Install NeoForge or Forge

Run the installer for the loader that belongs to your Minecraft/Pixelmon pair and select the server installation option. Start the generated server once. The first launch creates the configuration files and the EULA file; it may stop immediately, which is expected at this stage.

3. Accept the EULA and start again

Open the generated eula.txt, read the license and change the acceptance value to true only if you agree to it. Save the file and launch the server again. Wait for the console to report that the server is ready before stopping it cleanly.

4. Add Pixelmon

Stop the server, place the server-compatible Pixelmon jar in the server’s mods directory, and start it again. Confirm in the startup log that the loader discovers Pixelmon and that there is no missing-dependency or wrong-version error. A client jar that does not match the server jar will not solve a server-side loading error.

5. Generate a world at the right time

For a new adventure, generate the world after Pixelmon and any biome or world-generation mods are installed. This allows the spawn area and newly generated chunks to include the intended Pixelmon features. If you create a world first and add generation mods later, old chunks will not automatically be rebuilt. Make a backup before deleting or regenerating a world; regeneration destroys the existing map.

6. Configure Pixelmon before exploration

Stop the server and edit the Pixelmon configuration files created during the first launch. Decide settings that affect fresh chunks—such as world-generation or biome behavior—before players travel far from spawn. Changes to those settings usually affect newly generated terrain rather than areas that already exist. Restart after saving the configuration and inspect the log for malformed values.

  • Power Up Unlock dozens of unique items and weapon enchantments for devastating special attacks.
  • Options Personalize your character, then fight up-close and personal with melee swings, hang back with ranged attacks, or tank your way through swarms of mobs, by heavy armor

7. Add sidemods last

Install one sidemod at a time, checking its required Minecraft release, loader, Pixelmon range and dependencies. Restart after adding each jar. If the server stops loading, remove the most recently added file first and read the log for the named dependency or incompatible version.

8. Protect the world

  • Stop the server normally before copying world files.
  • Keep dated backups of the world, Pixelmon configuration and mod manifest.
  • Test a backup on a separate instance before making a major version upgrade.
  • Restrict who receives the server address and administrative credentials.

Memory, performance and hosting decisions

Situation Practical choice Reason
Same-network play with a few friends Local computer, at least 4 GB allocated Simple and inexpensive, but the host must stay online and have adequate CPU, storage and network capacity.
Regular group with exploration and sidemods More than the 4 GB minimum, monitored during play Additional entities, chunks and mods increase memory and processing demand.
Larger or always-online community Managed paid hosting The Pixelmon Wiki strongly recommends paid hosting for larger servers because performance, stability and safety become more important.

RAM is not a cure for every lag problem. Keep the world on fast storage, avoid running several heavy applications on the host, and watch the console for repeated errors. Raise the allocation gradually rather than assigning nearly all physical memory to Java; the operating system still needs room to function.

How quests and Research work

There is no single quest list shared by every Pixelmon modpack. First identify the pack name and exact Pixelmon/Minecraft version, then open the quest or Research interface supplied by that pack. A custom quest mod can add objectives that are not part of Pixelmon itself.

Custom campaign questlines

PokeQuests advertises a fully custom Kanto questline. In a pack that includes it, expect a structured regional campaign with gated progression and rewards defined by the pack author. The objectives, NPCs, item requirements and reward balance belong to that quest implementation; they are not universal Pixelmon rules. Follow the pack’s own quest screen and documentation rather than assuming that a Kanto objective exists in an unmodified Pixelmon installation.

Research tasks in newer releases

A recent community report describes Pixelmon 9.3.x on Minecraft 1.21.1 as replacing older quests with a Research system. Treat that as version-specific community information, not a guarantee for every 9.3.x pack. Confirm the exact build and check its current in-game documentation before publishing or following a fixed objective list. The interface may track discoveries, catches or other research goals rather than presenting a linear badge-style campaign.

Compare a quest system before choosing a pack

  • Campaign structure: Is there a regional storyline, or a collection of independent tasks?
  • Progression gates: Are gyms, areas, items or encounters locked behind earlier objectives?
  • Rewards: Does the system grant items, money, access, Pokémon or only completion records?
  • Multiplayer synchronization: Is progress per player, shared by a party, or controlled by server-side data?
  • Ownership of objectives: Are tasks supplied by Pixelmon, a quest mod or a custom adventure pack?

When friends report that a quest is missing, compare their pack manifest and version first. A player using a plain Pixelmon profile will not see objectives supplied by an additional quest mod, and a profile built for an older release may show a different interface.

Let friends connect without version errors

  1. Send each player the server’s Minecraft version, Pixelmon build, loader, Java requirement and complete mod manifest.
  2. Have everyone launch the instance once locally so missing dependencies appear before connection time.
  3. Confirm that the server is fully started and that the player is using the matching instance, not the default Minecraft profile.
  4. For local play, use the host computer’s reachable local address and ensure the operating-system firewall permits the server application.
  5. For remote play, use the hosting provider’s connection details or the network configuration appropriate to the host; do not expose administrative ports unnecessarily.
  6. Keep the server and client logs available. The first “mod rejection” line usually identifies the mismatched mod or version.

Troubleshoot the common failures

Symptom Likely cause Fix
“Incompatible mod set” or mod rejection Minecraft, Pixelmon, loader or sidemod versions differ Compare both manifests and replace the outlier with the server-approved file. Every connecting player must use the same Pixelmon version as the server.
Loader will not start Wrong Java runtime or wrong loader branch Use Java 21 for 9.3.0+, Java 17 for 9.2.0–9.2.10, or Java 8 before 9.2.0; reinstall the loader for the selected Minecraft release.
Pixelmon is absent from the server Jar is in the wrong directory or is client-only Stop the server and place the server-compatible jar in mods; restart and verify discovery in the log.
World lacks expected biomes or structures Chunks were generated before Pixelmon or biome mods were installed Use unexplored chunks, or create a new world after installing the generation mods. Back up before replacing a world.
Crashes after adding a sidemod Dependency missing or version unsupported Remove the newest jar, read the startup error, then install only a build compatible with the chosen Minecraft, loader and Pixelmon versions.
Out-of-memory errors or severe pauses Allocation below workload, too many loaded chunks or heavy additions Keep at least 4 GB allocated, add memory only when the host has it available, reduce simultaneous exploration and review added mods.
Friends cannot reach a local server Wrong address, firewall rule or host not running Verify the local address from the same network, allow the Java server through the firewall and confirm the console is ready.
Quest screen differs between players Different pack contents or a different Pixelmon build Compare manifests and the pack’s quest/Research mod. Do not assume a custom questline is included in base Pixelmon.

Updating without breaking the world

Do not replace a working Pixelmon jar merely because a newer build exists. Read the release’s Minecraft, Java and loader requirements, then test the update on a copy of the server.

  1. Stop the live server cleanly and make a dated backup of the world, configuration and mod folder.
  2. Clone the server into a test directory.
  3. Install the candidate Pixelmon, loader and Java versions in the clone.
  4. Start the clone and inspect the log for conversion warnings, missing dependencies and generation changes.
  5. Join with a matching test client and check spawn, storage, Pokémon data, quests or Research progress and sidemod features.
  6. Only after the test succeeds, schedule the live update and give players the new manifest.

Changing Minecraft or Pixelmon can alter world generation and quest data. Keeping the original backup is the safest way to recover if a conversion or mod interaction damages the live world.
