First, check whether the Imagination Library serves your area
The U.S. Imagination Library mails one age-appropriate book each month to enrolled children from birth through age five, at no cost to the family. - Check the Imagination Library first. Search by state on the official site and follow the local partner’s instructions. Confirm whether enrollment is open where you live.
- Search by ZIP code. Use First Things First’s Find Programs tool to locate book-distribution options, then contact each provider directly. Ask about age limits, eligibility, delivery method, frequency, fees, and current enrollment.
- Ask the people already serving your child. Contact the pediatric practice, school, childcare provider, or community program about Reach Out and Read, First Book, or other local book access. These programs reach families through participating institutions, so availability depends on those relationships.
- Call the local library. Ask about borrowing and early-literacy activities, including whether books or outreach are available to take home.
What to expect from paid books
Buying board books for babies and toddlers or picture books for preschool read-alouds can supplement a free program if you want books at home. A purchase is not a replacement for a free mailing program or institution-based service, and no particular commercial title is established here as the best choice.
