Image File Size vs. Sharpness: Why 100KB Can Beat 1MB

A 100KB image can look crisp while a 1MB image looks soft or artifact-filled. The difference comes down to pixels, compression, content and display size—not bytes alone.

A 100KB image can look sharper than a 1MB image because file size measures encoded bytes, not visible detail. Sharpness depends on the image’s pixel dimensions, its content, how it was compressed, and the size and density of the display. A compact file can preserve the details that matter at its intended size; a larger one can still look soft, pixelated, or full of compression artifacts.

What file size tells you—and what it doesn’t

File size tells you how many bytes an image uses. It does not tell you how many pixels it has, how much detail those pixels contain, or how clearly that detail will appear on a particular screen. Format, encoder, compression mode, settings, and image content all affect how efficiently image information is stored. Google’s WebP compression documentation describes techniques such as prediction coding and allocating bits across image regions; different encoding choices can produce different visual results at similar sizes.

That is why comparing “100KB” with “1MB” alone cannot establish which image is better. Even a large file may have too few pixels for its display size, while a smaller file may look clear when viewed at the size it was made for.

How compression changes what you see

Lossy compression trades some image information for smaller files

Lossy compression reduces data by approximating or discarding some information. Encoders make choices about what to retain and how to represent it, so two exports of the same image can differ in both size and appearance. Those choices may preserve visually important edges or texture efficiently, but the outcome depends on the source and settings; no format guarantees that every image will look better than every other format.

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

Lossless compression preserves pixel values

Lossless compression reduces redundant data without changing the original pixel values. It does not necessarily produce a smaller file than a lossy export. WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, so the file extension alone does not tell you which mode was used, as specified in RFC 9649.

Quality settings are not a shared scale across formats

A quality number in one encoder is not directly comparable to the same number in another. Google notes in its WebP FAQ that a WebP encoded at a higher quality setting can be larger than a JPEG encoded at a lower setting. Compare the resulting images, not the nominal setting numbers.

Why a 1MB image can still look bad

  • It has too few pixels for the displayed size. Enlarging a low-resolution image does not restore detail absent from the source. On a high-density display, a source with insufficient resolution can look soft. Apple’s image delivery guidance discusses supplying appropriately sized, high-resolution images for Retina displays.
  • Compression artifacts are already present. A large byte count cannot undo blur, ringing, or blockiness introduced by an earlier lossy export. Re-encoding a degraded image cannot reliably bring back discarded detail.
  • The image content makes defects conspicuous. Text, diagrams, line art, and sharp edges can reveal blur or other artifacts more readily than a photograph with smoother areas. web.dev’s image performance guidance notes that lossy compression can be less effective for sharp edges, line art, and text.
  • The comparison is uneven. Different zoom levels, displayed sizes, screens, or thumbnail views can make one version seem clearer even when the comparison does not reflect how the images will actually be used.

How to compare two images fairly

  1. Start with the same source or scene. If you are comparing encodings, use exports from the same original image.
  2. Note each file’s format and pixel dimensions. Width and height help show whether either image is being enlarged; file size does not.
  3. View both at the same intended size on the same screen. Check ordinary viewing size first, then inspect matching details at 100% zoom. The intended display size matters because the same source can look different when scaled.
  4. Look for defects relevant to the image. Check for lost texture, blurred edges, halos, blockiness, color shifts, or text that has become difficult to read.
  5. If making new exports, begin with the best original available. Adjust compression settings and compare the actual results. web.dev recommends experimenting with compression levels to find an acceptable balance between visual quality and file size.

What to weigh when choosing an export

Factor What to check
Appearance Does it look clear at the intended display size, and are artifacts noticeable on closer inspection?
Pixel dimensions and scaling Does the source have enough pixels for the rendered size and screen density?
Image content Is it a photograph, text, a sharp-edged graphic, or a mixture? Different content exposes compression defects differently.
Compression Is the export lossy or lossless, and which settings produced it?
Delivery constraints How many bytes must be stored or transferred, and is the size saving worth any visible loss?
Required features Does the image need transparency or animation, and does the intended delivery path support the chosen format? RFC 9649 specifies WebP support for transparency and animation as well as lossy and lossless modes.

For a website, a smaller file can reduce the amount of data visitors need to download, but the useful target is not the smallest possible byte count at any cost. It is an image that remains clear at its actual display size while meeting delivery needs. Google’s compression guidance and web.dev’s image guidance both point to testing compression levels to find that balance.
