Use PNG for a static stream overlay that needs transparent areas, WEBM for an animated transparent overlay when your streaming software supports it, JPEG for many photo backgrounds, and a lossless format such as PNG for text, logos, screenshots, and crisp graphics. The right choice depends on the asset and the source type that will use it—not on a universal “best” format.
An overlay’s file format is separate from the codec and delivery settings used to transmit your live video. Choose those independently.

Choose a format for the kind of image

PNG or WebP for a stream overlay?
For a static transparent overlay, PNG is the safer starting point because the streaming-specific guidance from Elgato explicitly recommends it for that use. WebP can carry transparency, but that capability does not guarantee compatibility with your streaming software’s image source. Check the application’s supported formats for that source before exporting.
If you are adding motion, treat it as an animated-overlay workflow rather than assuming a still-image format will behave the same way. Elgato recommends WEBM for the transparent animation use case it describes; verify playback and transparency in your chosen software.

Keep image format separate from live-video settings
A PNG overlay or JPEG background is a scene asset. It does not determine how the live audiovisual program is encoded or delivered. YouTube’s live-stream guidance covers video settings such as codec, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, and delivery protocol; choose those separately from the format of your graphics.
Match the canvas without distorting the artwork
Aspect ratio and scaling affect how an image appears regardless of whether it is PNG, JPEG, or another format. OBS describes 16:9 as common for major streaming platforms and gives 1920×1080, 1280×720, and 3840×2160 as 16:9 examples in guidance dated 2021. A vertical or square scene may call for a different canvas.

Preserve the source proportions when resizing. OBS warns that stretching content to fit a mismatched canvas warps and distorts it. Instead, scale proportionally and choose whether to crop, leave unused space, or fill that space with a background.
Check compatibility for the exact platform feature
Format support is specific to the application, source type, and platform feature. For example, Twitch Developers’ instruction to “Avoid transparency in your PNG” is about a Twitch extension discovery image, not a general rule for transparent scene overlays. Do not transfer a requirement for one feature to another.

Likewise, file-type and size limits for a channel-page image do not automatically apply to a scene overlay. Check the current documentation for the exact place you plan to use the image before exporting.
