If you want to turn a starting idea into something people can explore, the closest established model is a mind map: a central topic with branches for related thoughts. A concept map is a better fit when the important part is showing how ideas connect, not just arranging them in a hierarchy. Decide which kind of map your tool creates before choosing its editing, sharing, and export features.
Choose the map structure before building the tool
A mind map begins with one central idea and expands outward into branches. Miro describes using branches for causes, factors, or next steps, then dragging and rearranging nodes as the map develops. That makes the format a natural fit for brainstorming, outlining, and exploring a topic from a clear starting point. Miro’s mind map guide describes this workflow.

A concept map is related, but it need not follow the same tree-like structure. If users need to express relationships among several concepts—rather than only parent-and-child branches—make those connections explicit in your data model and interface. The terms are useful distinctions, not interchangeable promises: a product should tell people whether it supports a branching hierarchy, a network of links, or both.

Make creating and exploring a map feel natural
Start with a useful first action
Let users add a central idea, then create branches without having to learn a complex editor. A person mapping a product idea, for example, might branch into audience, problem, possible features, and next steps. Those are illustrative categories, not a required template; the map should remain easy to adapt to a user’s subject.

Support rearranging as thinking changes
Ideas rarely arrive in their final order. Miro’s product materials describe dragging and rearranging nodes, which is a practical interaction to consider: users should be able to reorganize a map without rebuilding it. Make the relationship between a moved node and its parent clear, and ensure that adding a branch does not make the canvas difficult to navigate.
Design exploration for the reader, not only the author
An interactive map can mean more than an editable canvas. Decide whether viewers can expand or collapse branches, navigate between connected concepts, or simply pan and zoom. These are product decisions to verify in your own tool; the cited product descriptions do not establish a feature-by-feature comparison of those behaviors across services.

Decide how people will share and collaborate
Sharing, permissions, and collaboration are separate requirements. A solo creator may only need a link to view a map. A team may need live co-editing or asynchronous feedback, plus distinct view, comment, and edit access. Public sharing and embedding can help make a map available elsewhere, but should be deliberate choices if the map could contain private ideas.

Plan for portability before users need it
A map is more useful when people can take it beyond the service where they created it. Export formats are not equivalent: an image is easy to insert into a document, while a structured format may preserve more of the map for later editing or reuse. Tell users what an export retains, and make it clear when an export is a static representation.
Xmind’s export guide lists PNG, SVG, PDF, Excel, Word, OPML, TextBundle, PowerPoint, and Markdown. The available formats are documented on Xmind’s export guide; check its current details when choosing a format for a specific workflow. Turn the product idea into a short requirements list
- Structure: Is each map a hierarchy, a network of relationships, or a choice between both?
- Editing: Can users add, move, and reorganize ideas without losing their intended relationships?
- Exploration: What can a viewer do with a map, and what requires edit access?
- Collaboration: Do users need simultaneous editing, asynchronous input, or both?
- Access: Can a map be private, shared with selected people, or made public?
- Portability: Which export formats fit the reader’s next step, and what information survives each export?
Answering these questions defines the product more clearly than calling it simply an “interactive map.” Existing mind mapping products show several possible combinations of branching, collaboration, sharing, and export; the right combination depends on the people who will create and use the map.
