After Altman returned and Sutskever later left OpenAI, Sutskever co-founded Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), a company whose stated sole goal is to build a safe superintelligence. NVIDIA announced a long-term strategic partnership with SSI on July 27, 2026, but that announcement does not establish that SSI has released a public AI product.
Who is the OpenAI scientist involved in the effort to remove Sam Altman?
It is Ilya Sutskever, an OpenAI co-founder and its former chief scientist. In November 2023, he participated in the OpenAI board effort that temporarily removed CEO Sam Altman. The Associated Press and TIME reported in 2024 that Sutskever later supported Altman’s return. The failed attempt was a board crisis, not evidence that Sutskever alone orchestrated it.

What is Safe Superintelligence, and what does it say it is building?
SSI describes itself as a company focused on developing a safe superintelligence. In its founding statement, published June 19, 2024, the founders wrote: “We have started the world’s first straight-shot SSI lab, with one goal and one product: a safe superintelligence.” That is the company’s stated ambition, not a claim that it has already achieved superintelligence or released a model.

The founders say SSI intends to advance capability and safety together instead of treating safety as a later add-on. They also say its business model is designed to shield safety, security, and progress from short-term commercial pressure: “Our singular focus means no distraction by management overhead or product cycles, and our business model means safety, security, and progress are all insulated from short-term commercial pressures.” These are SSI’s descriptions of its approach; the statement does not provide a public product or a way to independently assess its results.
Where is SSI based?
