The IKEA KLIPPBOK can sound a local alarm when it detects water, and it can send phone notifications when connected to a compatible smart-home system. For phone control, IKEA says you need a Thread Border Router. The sensor warns you about a leak; it does not shut off the water.
What the KLIPPBOK does when it detects water
KLIPPBOK is a small indoor water-leak sensor that uses Matter over Thread. IKEA says it beeps when it comes into contact with water. Connected to a suitable smart-home hub, it can also send notifications to a smartphone.

Those are two different kinds of warning. The audible alarm can alert someone nearby; a phone notification may reach you when you are away, provided the sensor, hub, network and smart-home platform are set up to support that function. Neither warning physically stops a leak.

For phone control, IKEA says KLIPPBOK needs a Thread Border Router. IKEA’s DIRIGERA hub is one example. IKEA also lists Amazon, Apple, Google, Homey and Samsung as compatible smart-home systems, but those examples do not establish that every hub or every feature will work in every setup.

Before buying, check whether your existing hub can act as a Thread Border Router and whether your chosen platform supports the notifications or automations you want. Matter support by itself should not be taken as proof that a particular hub provides Thread connectivity or every KLIPPBOK feature.
Where to place a water-leak sensor
Place sensors where a leak could begin or collect, such as under sinks and near pipe joins. A sensor is most useful when water can reach its detection area early, while the alarm or notification can still prompt a timely response.

- Consider likely leak points around plumbing and appliances that use water.
- Keep the sensor indoors and accessible for inspection and battery changes.
- Consider the distance to the Thread network equipment and any walls or building materials between them; IKEA notes that placement and materials can affect wireless range.
KLIPPBOK is not waterproof and must not be submerged, according to its manual. It is intended to detect water, not to operate underwater or withstand flooding.

What to know about batteries and size
IKEA says batteries are sold separately and recommends two LADDA HR03 AAA 1.2 V rechargeable batteries. Include that purchase in your setup plan rather than assuming the sensor is ready to use out of the box.

Can a leak sensor shut off the water automatically?
Not on its own. KLIPPBOK detects water and can warn you; stopping the flow requires a separate compatible shutoff valve or actuator and an automation that closes it after detection. That setup adds plumbing and smart-home compatibility requirements beyond the sensor itself.

Do not assume a particular valve works with KLIPPBOK just because both are smart-home products. Check the valve’s compatibility with your plumbing and smart-home platform, confirm the sensor can trigger the intended automation, and account for installation requirements before relying on automatic shutoff.
Is KLIPPBOK the right choice for your home?
KLIPPBOK is a reasonable option to consider if you want an audible warning and are comfortable supplying the recommended batteries. It may also suit you if you want phone alerts and already have—or plan to add—a compatible Thread Border Router and a platform that supports the features you need.

If you only want a local warning, the connected setup may not be necessary for that basic use. If you need alerts while away, verify the hub and platform requirements before purchase. If your priority is limiting water flow without waiting for someone to respond, treat automatic shutoff as a separate system to research and verify—not as a feature of the sensor.
