Check the size before buying bedding
The cited UK single is 90×190 cm, while the Austrian medium-firm single is 90×200 cm. A 10 cm length difference can affect fit: match the mattress’s exact local dimensions to the bed frame, fitted sheet and protector rather than relying on the word “single.” IKEA recommends using a mattress protector; choose one sized for the specific mattress.

IKEA Ireland’s medium-firm listing also includes customer wording such as “Very comfy but you maybe sweaty for hot days” and “Overpowering chemical Smell.” Those remarks are individual experiences, not evidence that all mattresses have the same issue or that a particular problem occurs at a known rate. The Austrian medium-firm listing says to machine-wash the cover at up to 60°C on a normal cycle, turn it inside out and zip it closed first, then line-dry it. It says not to bleach, iron or dry-clean the cover. Care directions may vary by version and market, so check the label supplied with your mattress before washing.

IKEA of Sweden’s general mattress-care guidance says, “Most of our mattresses and mattress pads are roll packed. They can be used right away but will regain their shape and size completely after 3-4 days.” This is general guidance, not a model-specific promise of a particular expansion result.
IKEA also says airing and vacuuming in a well-ventilated room can help new-material odor dissipate. That guidance does not invalidate customers’ reports of persistent smells; it describes IKEA’s general advice rather than a guarantee about every individual mattress.
