Internet Information Services (IIS) is Microsoft’s web server role for Windows Server and Windows Client. It hosts websites, web applications, and services on public, private, or organizational networks.
What does Internet Information Services mean?
IIS stands for Internet Information Services. It is software functionality included with Windows, not a web browser, domain registrar, internet connection, or hosting company. A Windows computer configured with IIS can receive requests for hosted sites or applications and serve content or pass requests through configured processing components.

Microsoft describes IIS as the built-in web server role for Windows Server and Client. On Windows Server, the Web Server (IIS) role can host websites, applications, and services and share information over Internet, intranet, or extranet networks. See Microsoft Learn’s IIS administration training and the Windows Server Web Server installation guide.
What is IIS used for?
- Hosting a public website or an internal intranet site on a Windows system.
- Running web applications and web services.
- Serving multiple sites with their own bindings and settings.
- Adding request-processing functions, such as authentication or logging, through enabled IIS modules.
The specific role services and features available depend on the Windows release and edition. Microsoft’s cited Web Server installation guide covers Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019, and 2016; check the documentation for the exact Windows version before following installation instructions.

How does IIS handle requests?
Modules provide server features
IIS 7 and later use a modular design. Microsoft describes the feature set as more than thirty independent modules, including components for authentication, caching, logging, security, and customized content handling. Administrators can enable the components a workload needs; removing unused features can reduce the code running on requests, memory use, and attack surface. The module architecture is described in Microsoft’s IIS Modules Overview.
Application pools separate workloads
An application pool groups settings for one or more worker processes that serve assigned sites, applications, or services. Separate pools create process boundaries, helping isolate one application’s problems from workloads in other pools. Pool count and worker-process settings still need to fit the server’s capacity. Microsoft documents the configuration in Application Pools.

Windows Process Activation Service manages processes
In IIS 7 and later, Windows Process Activation Service (WAS) manages application-pool configuration and worker processes as part of the HTTP process activation model. The details matter most when administering a server; they are not necessary to distinguish IIS from a browser or hosting provider. See Microsoft’s IIS Web Server Overview.
Is IIS a web server?
Yes. IIS is Microsoft’s Windows web server role and platform. It provides the server-side software that hosts websites, web applications, and services; Windows is the operating system on which that role or feature is installed.
