Its stated differences are a revised circuit board, changes to the DAC and amplifier stages, and two Levine-voiced digital filters. Those design changes describe how iFi built and tuned the MT; they do not, by themselves, establish that it sounds better than the standard GR 2.
What the GR 2 MT upgrade changes
In its October 1, 2026 announcement, iFi says the MT replaces the standard GR 2’s FR-4 circuit board with an aerospace-grade hydrocarbon ceramic PCB and changes components in the DAC’s I/V and amplifier stages.
- Amplifier-stage parts: iFi specifies an OV4627A stage, tantalum resistors and Audio Note Kaisei capacitors.
- DAC and processing: The MT retains the Burr-Brown PCM1795 DAC and JVCKENWOOD K2HD Technology used in the GR 2 platform.
- Filters: It adds two digital filters voiced in collaboration with Levine.
iFi presents the component choices and filters as part of its tuning approach. The announcement does not include independent measurements or a controlled comparison demonstrating a particular audible improvement, so claims about greater detail, authenticity or emotional impact should be understood as intended results, not independently established performance.
What “Master Tuned” means here
Levine’s role is to voice the two filters and contribute to the edition’s tuning, rather than to change the GR 2 into a different product category. As he put it in iFi’s announcement: “The goal of any producer is to document the authenticity and emotion behind the artist’s performance. I have voiced the iDSD GR2 MT with this same goal in mind, and I hope you feel that when you listen”. The statement explains the collaborator’s aim; individual preference for a filter or overall sound remains subjective.

How it compares with the standard GR 2
| Feature | iDSD GR 2 MT | Standard iDSD GR 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Circuit board and analogue stages | iFi says it uses a hydrocarbon ceramic PCB and revised DAC I/V and amplifier-stage components. iFi launch release | FR-4 board, according to iFi’s description of what the MT replaces. iFi launch release |
| Digital filters | Two exclusive filters voiced with Steve Levine. iFi launch release | MT-specific filter changes are not stated for the standard GR 2. iFi product page |
| Launch price | £699 / $699 / €729, reported by What Hi-Fi? on October 1, 2026; these are launch figures, not current quotes. What Hi-Fi? | £529 / $529 / AU$849, reported as standard GR 2 launch prices in the same October 1, 2026 article; historical context only. What Hi-Fi? |
For a buying decision, compare the MT’s current local price with the standard GR 2’s current local price rather than relying on those historical launch figures. The practical question is whether you value the specified hardware changes and Levine’s filter tuning enough to pay any current premium.
Connectivity and platform features
iFi’s MT launch announcement describes Bluetooth 5.4 with aptX Lossless and LDAC, desktop mode that bypasses the internal battery, hybrid power modes, and support for over-the-air updates and control through the iFi Nexis app. These are announcement-level MT claims; verify the features on the specific regional retail unit and its documentation.

iFi’s standard GR 2 product page lists USB-C and optical/coaxial S/PDIF digital inputs, balanced 4.4mm and single-ended 3.5mm analogue inputs and outputs, PCM up to 768kHz, and DSD512. The MT launch release also states output of over 1,500mW RMS at 32 ohms. Separately, the standard GR 2 page gives a precise figure of 1,513mW RMS at 32Ω for balanced output; that more specific platform-page number should not be treated as a separately confirmed MT measurement.
