If You’d Invested $1,000 in Broadcom’s 2009 IPO, Here’s What It Would Be Worth

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A $1,000 investment at Avago Technologies’ 2009 IPO would amount to about 667 shares at the reported split-adjusted IPO price of $1.50, assuming fractional shares. Using Broadcom’s September 18, 2026 closing price of $357.61, those shares would be worth about $238,400 before dividends. The Motley Fool’s separate example uses $1,005 for 670 shares and estimates about $90,000 in accumulated dividends, but its reported stock-value estimate does not match the closing price shown on the same page.

What would $1,000 invested in Broadcom’s 2009 IPO be worth?

The company was Avago Technologies when it went public on August 6, 2009; Broadcom is the company’s name in the retrospective framing. The Motley Fool reports a split-adjusted IPO price of $1.50 per share. At that price, $1,000 buys about 666.7 shares if fractional shares are available. Broadcom’s September 18, 2026 close was $357.61, so multiplying that dated price by 666.7 shares gives an estimated share value of about $238,400, before dividends, taxes, or fees. This is a calculation from the reported price and share count, not a reported investor account balance. The Motley Fool’s article supplies the IPO details, while Broadcom’s stock-information page supplies the dated closing price.

Why does a published estimate say about $310,000?

The Motley Fool’s worked example is not exactly a $1,000 investment: it says $1,005 would have bought 670 shares at the split-adjusted $1.50 IPO price. It estimates that example’s shares at about $220,000 and accumulated dividends at about $90,000, for a combined figure near $310,000. However, the same article displays a $355.14 share quote. At that displayed price, 670 shares would be worth about $237,900, not $220,000. Using Broadcom’s later September 18, 2026 close of $357.61 gives about $239,600 for 670 shares before dividends. The article’s stock-value estimate therefore does not reconcile with either displayed or later dated quote; treat its $310,000 figure as the publication’s estimate, not a calculation validated by those prices.

How much came from dividends?

For its 670-share example, The Motley Fool estimates approximately $90,000 in cumulative dividends and reports $1,742 in 2026 annual cash payouts, equivalent to $2.60 per share for that year. Its combined estimate adds dividends to the value of the shares. That is a cash-retained convention: it should not be read as a dividend-reinvested total, which would require modeling when each dividend was paid and how many additional shares it bought. Broadcom says future dividends are declared at the board’s discretion and depend on financial and legal considerations; they are not guaranteed. See Broadcom’s investor FAQs.

What stock splits change—and what they do not

The $1.50 IPO price cited here is already adjusted for subsequent splits. Broadcom says the historical stock prices on its stock-information page are adjusted for splits and/or dividends, so do not apply another split factor to those adjusted figures. A split changes the number of shares and the price per share proportionately; it does not, by itself, increase the value of an investor’s holding. Broadcom’s 2024 stock-split FAQ explains that a split does not change a holder’s proportionate ownership or the total value immediately after the split: Broadcom stock-split FAQ.

What this estimate leaves out

  • Whole versus fractional shares: The $1,000 calculation assumes fractional shares; the Motley Fool example rounds to 670 whole shares and uses $1,005.
  • Dividend treatment: Dividends are shown separately from share value and treated as cash retained, not reinvested.
  • Taxes and fees: Neither calculation includes taxes, transaction costs, or account-specific charges.
  • Inflation: The figures are nominal dollars; they do not adjust for changes in purchasing power.
  • Valuation date: The share-price calculation uses the September 18, 2026 close, not a live quote or a forecast. Broadcom cautions that a closing price does not indicate future performance.
