Software engineers are paid to deliver software that solves a real problem and works safely in its real setting—not simply to type code. AI can generate or change code, but engineers still have to determine what should be built, fit it into a larger system, verify its behavior, and take responsibility for its operation and upkeep.
Code is an output; working software is the outcome
A code suggestion can be syntactically valid and still solve the wrong problem, fail when connected to existing services, expose sensitive data, or break under real-world use. The engineering job spans the decisions and checks between a need and a dependable result.

That work begins with understanding users and organizational constraints. Engineers clarify incomplete requests, identify edge cases, and turn expectations into requirements that can be implemented and tested. They then choose how software components, data, and services should fit together, weighing factors such as delivery speed, cost, security, performance, and future maintenance.

Deciding what to build
Users may describe a desired feature without knowing the technical or operational consequences. Engineers help uncover the underlying need, ask what should happen in less common cases, and define behavior precisely enough that a team can build and evaluate it. A fast implementation of an unclear request can still be a failure.
#1 Best Overall
Designing how it fits
Software rarely stands alone. A change may touch databases, APIs, internal services, identity systems, or third-party tools. Engineers decide where a change belongs and how it should interact with those parts. Those choices affect reliability and security now, as well as how difficult the system will be to change later.
Verifying correctness and safety
Whether code is written by a person or generated by AI, it must be checked. Engineers review changes, write and run tests, investigate failures, and assess security and performance risks. Tests help establish that expected cases work; review and judgment are also needed to consider whether the change is appropriate for the system and its users.
Rank #2
Releasing and maintaining the result
Delivery does not end when code is merged. Engineers help release changes, respond when software behaves unexpectedly, and maintain systems as user needs, dependencies, and operating conditions change. Someone must diagnose an incident, decide what to fix first, and assess the effects of a repair across the system.
What the pay and job outlook figures say—and what they do not
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $135,980 for software developers in May 2025. This is a U.S. national occupational median, not a guaranteed salary or a worldwide benchmark. Individual pay varies, and this single figure does not measure the value of any one task in an engineer’s job. See the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook entry for software developers, QA analysts, and testers.
The same BLS outlook projects 10% employment growth from 2025 to 2035 for the combined group of software developers, quality assurance analysts, and testers, describing that growth as much faster than average for all occupations. It is a projection for the combined group, not a forecast of what AI will do to software-engineer jobs. The BLS also discusses possible AI impacts on occupational projections, but exposure to AI-related change is not itself a prediction that an occupation will be eliminated. Its AI employment-projections discussion should not be confused with the current outlook’s different period and combined occupation group.
What developers report about using AI
Stack Overflow’s 2025 Developer Survey found that 84% of respondents used or planned to use AI tools in their development workflows. That is a survey result among respondents, not a census of all engineers or proof that AI has changed hiring. In the same survey, 64% said AI was not a threat to their job, down from 68% the prior year. Those answers describe respondents’ views, not measured job security. The survey’s AI results and work results provide the relevant context.
Among respondents who used AI agents, about 70% agreed agents reduced time on specific development tasks, and 69% agreed they increased productivity. These are self-reported views about task-level effects, not controlled measurements of output across the full software lifecycle. Saving time on a coding task does not remove the need to decide whether the proposed change is correct, secure, and compatible with the surrounding system.
DORA’s 2025 report is another source on AI-assisted software development. Its Google Research page describes a study drawing on more than 100 hours of qualitative data and survey responses from nearly 5,000 technology professionals around the world. Those sample and method details do not, by themselves, establish a particular productivity effect or job-count change. See the DORA 2025 report page.

The available figures do not establish that AI has caused a specific change in engineering employment or wages. Adoption rates, opinions about job security, task-level time savings, and occupational projections answer different questions; none alone proves that engineers are being replaced or guarantees continued demand at a particular level.
AI can change which tasks take the most time, especially where tools help with implementation. But generating code is not the same as delivering a sound change in a live system. The role still includes deciding what to build, integrating it, checking it, and supporting it after release. The evidence cited here supports a measured conclusion: AI is becoming part of many developers’ workflows, while its causal effect on engineering jobs and pay remains unestablished.
