What “performs best” means in this comparison
These subscriptions provide monitoring and assistance, not a guarantee that identity theft will be prevented. A July 2026 Security.org head-to-head discusses differences in pricing and monitoring, while its 2026 roundup ranks LifeLock highest overall. Those are editorial assessments, not controlled evidence that one service prevents more identity theft for every customer. Security.org’s head-to-head and 2026 roundup are useful context, but neither establishes a universal outcome winner.

How the advertised plans differ
| Service | Plan structure and positioning | Price or advertised benefit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identity Guard | Its official page lists Value, Total, and Ultra for individual and family memberships. The page presents Value as basic identity protection, Total as standard identity and credit protection, and Ultra as premium identity and credit protection. | When accessed in 2026, the page showed one Value individual example at $7.50 per month billed annually for the first year ($90 total), renewing at $107.88 per year. Offers vary by option and billing cadence. | Confirm the live price for the selected membership and billing cadence, renewal amount, and features included in that tier. Identity Guard plans |
| LifeLock | Its official product pages present tiered memberships. Features and terms depend on the selected plan. | Some plans advertise identity-theft reimbursement limits up to $3 million. This is a maximum plan benefit subject to eligibility and contract terms, not a typical payout or measure of prevention. Pricing varies with plan and promotion. | Check the live price, exact reimbursement terms and exclusions, and which monitoring and assistance features the chosen tier includes. Compare the tiers that match your needs
Brand-level summaries can obscure important differences: some features are limited to particular tiers, and introductory prices do not tell you the cost after renewal. Before choosing, compare the same kinds of coverage across the exact plans you would buy:
- Credit monitoring: Check how many credit bureaus are monitored and how often alerts or credit information update.
- Other monitoring: Identify which financial and identity events are covered by that tier.
- Recovery assistance: Review what help is available if you need to resolve identity-theft issues.
- Insurance terms: Read eligibility requirements, limits, and exclusions. A stated ceiling is not a promise that a claim will qualify or pay that amount.
- Household coverage: Compare who is covered under individual and family memberships.
- Total cost: Compare the amount due during the promotion with the renewal price and billing cadence.
Identity Guard’s page displays promotional first-year prices alongside higher renewal prices; the example in the table is specific to one displayed Value individual offer, not a price for every customer. LifeLock’s pages are dynamic, so check the current price and terms for your chosen tier rather than relying on a search-result offer.

Monitoring is an alert layer, not a freeze
The CFPB describes identity monitoring as scanning sources for unusual activity that could indicate identity theft. An alert can prompt you to investigate; it does not itself block a thief from opening a new account. The FTC explains that a credit freeze can help prevent a thief from opening new credit accounts in your name. A freeze is a separate protective action, not a substitute for deciding whether a monitoring subscription fits your needs. See the CFPB explanation of identity monitoring and the FTC consumer guide to identity theft.
Which service is the better fit?
Consider LifeLock if breadth and advertised limits matter most
LifeLock is the conditional choice for readers who value broad tiered monitoring and higher advertised reimbursement limits. Treat the advertised maximum—up to $3 million on some plans—as a benefit ceiling governed by the plan’s eligibility and contract terms, not as evidence of superior prevention or an expected payout.

- WHAT DOES IT COVER: Roll once over names, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and prescription details on mail, statements, shipping labels, and boxes before recycling. The patented 0.5" masking pattern hides 3 lines of text in one pass.
- HOW MANY USES DO YOU GET: Each pre-inked Guard Your ID Advanced Roller delivers about 1,000 impressions (roughly 100 feet of coverage), so the 3-pack gives you around 3,000. A twist-on cap keeps the ink fresh for a 2-year shelf life.
- DOES IT WORK ON GLOSSY LABELS: Yes, on most glossy and coated surfaces, plus paper, envelopes, junk mail, and prescription labels. Give the ink 10 to 15 seconds to dry on slick surfaces; it is instant on paper. Results vary by coating.
- IS IT REFILLABLE: No, and that is the point. The Advanced Roller is pre-inked and sealed, so there are no refill cartridges to buy, no ink bottles to handle, and nothing to dry out on the shelf. When one runs out, reach for the next roller.
- SHREDDER OR ROLLER: No jams, no paper dust, no noise, and the page stays intact and recyclable. Covers boxes and shipping labels a shredder cannot. Faster than a redacting marker, fits in a drawer. Turquoise, Green, White: mail, office, parent.
Consider Identity Guard if entry price and plan selection matter most
Identity Guard is worth evaluating if you want to compare selectable individual or family plans and the entry-level advertised price is a priority. Confirm the renewal cost and the protections included in the specific tier; the displayed first-year offer is not necessarily available to every customer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy prevention claims deserve care
In a March 2010 enforcement release, the FTC reported that LifeLock agreed to pay $12 million to settle charges brought by the FTC and 35 states concerning identity-theft prevention and data-security claims. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan said: “This agreement effectively prevents LifeLock from misrepresenting that its services offer absolute prevention against identity theft because there is unfortunately no foolproof way to avoid ID theft.” This is historical enforcement context, not evidence of current plan performance. The practical distinction remains important: monitoring can surface activity, and assistance may help with recovery, but no service should be presented as guaranteeing that identity theft will not happen.
