IceCube cannot automatically restore every event that appears to be missing. The answer depends on where it disappeared: a Digital Optical Module (DOM) may not have recorded hits, the trigger may not have selected them, temporary hit-spooling may or may not preserve them, or later software may have omitted a frame. Only data that were actually acquired and retained can potentially be recovered.
What “dropped event” can mean in IceCube
IceCube’s data-acquisition system (DAQ) collects hits from its Digital Optical Modules, applies triggers, and assembles selected data into events. Those stages matter: a missing sensor measurement, a hit that did not enter a triggered event, and an event omitted from a processed file are distinct cases. The DAQ overview describes the flow from raw hits through triggering and event building: IceCube DAQ overview.

| Where it may disappear | What that means | What recovery depends on |
|---|---|---|
| DOM acquisition | A sensor did not report usable hits, or stopped responding. | Whether the detector recorded the measurements at all; downstream software cannot recreate unobserved hits. |
| Triggering and event building | Hits were not selected into a relevant trigger or assembled event. | Whether the data remain available in a temporary hit buffer or another retained record. |
| Temporary hit preservation | Raw hits may be buffered and saved for special analysis cases. | Whether spooling applied to the run and interval, and whether the buffered hits still exist. |
| Offline processing or writing | A derived file may omit a frame after filtering or writing choices. | Whether the source DAQ frames or another upstream copy remain available. |
Can IceCube recover hits that did not trigger an event?
IceCube documentation describes HitSpooling, which buffers raw hits for a limited time and can preserve them for special analysis cases. This offers a possible route to examine hits that were not part of an ordinary triggered event, but it is not a guarantee that every hit was retained or that spooled data exist for a particular run. The public description gives no universal retention duration. See the DAQ documentation for the stated buffering capability.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Spooling can only help with hits that were recorded and remain available. If a DOM never registered a measurement, software cannot reconstruct it from later event files. An event absent from an output file alone does not establish that the sensor failed or that the underlying hits are gone.

What happens when a DOM stops responding?
A historical IceCube DAQ architecture paper describes a StringHub dropping an unresponsive DOM from the current run. This is an operational response to a component problem, not a method of recreating hits the DOM did not deliver. The account is from 2008, so it illustrates the architecture and a failure response; it should not be treated as a verified description of every current run. See the DAQ architecture paper.
The same paper describes run-based operation in which StringHubs collect and time-sort DOM data, trigger components create event descriptions, and an EventBuilder gathers data into an event stream. That sequence explains why finding a gap in a final event file is not, by itself, enough to identify the cause.

Could offline processing have removed the event?
Yes. IceTray’s Q-frame documentation distinguishes DAQ frames from child Physics views and describes a writer option that drops orphan DAQ frames when their child Physics events have been dropped. In that situation, a frame missing from a derived file can reflect filtering or file-writing behavior rather than loss at the sensor. Consult the Q-frame documentation when interpreting this kind of output.

How to investigate a specific missing interval
The useful question is not simply whether an event was dropped, but which stage first lacks the data. For an actual run, a practical diagnostic sequence is:
- Pin down the record. Identify the run, time interval, DOM if known, and the event or frame expected to contain the data.
- Check the acquisition layer. Determine whether usable hits from the relevant DOM reached the DAQ, and whether there is evidence that a component became unresponsive.
- Check selection and event building. Establish whether the hits were part of a relevant trigger and whether the expected event was assembled.
- Ask whether spooled hits exist. Confirm with IceCube operators whether HitSpooling applied to that case and whether the relevant buffered data remain available.
- Trace downstream processing. Compare the derived output with its upstream frames and review filtering and writer behavior, including treatment of orphan frames.
This is a reasoned way to separate possible causes, not a published official incident checklist. IceCube’s 2021 v1.0 operations plan assigns DAQ software engineers responsibility for system uptime and for the integrity, correctness, and completeness of produced data, and says they regularly test and upgrade DAQ systems. Operational questions are therefore best directed to the responsible IceCube collaboration team; that responsibility does not mean every incident can be recovered. See the IceCube operations plan.

Can IceCube public data restore a missing live event?
No. The IceCube Open Data Format documents how to work with released calibrated event data, including run, trigger, timestamp, and hit information. It is an analysis format, not a service for repairing missing live-acquisition data. See the Open Data Format tutorial.
IceCube says public releases follow completion of main analyses and publication of results. Its releases page lists IceTracks-DR2, covering track-like observations from 2008–2022, with a release date of May 21, 2026. That released dataset is not presented as a complete copy of raw operational data and should not be assumed to contain a missing live record. Check the IceCube data releases page for current release information.
