I will never use a soundbar again—not because soundbars are universally bad, but because I prefer a home theater I can arrange around my room. For that, an AV receiver paired with separate speakers offers more control over speaker placement and system configuration. It also takes more space, equipment, cabling, and setup. Dolby describes soundbars as a convenient fit for living rooms, while positioning receiver-based systems as an advanced option for people who have room to tailor the sound.
Why I prefer a receiver and separate speakers
A soundbar puts multiple speaker drivers in one long enclosure, making it a tidy, relatively simple way to improve a TV’s sound. A separate-speaker system spreads those speakers around the listening area instead. That lets me choose where the front, center, and surround channels go rather than accepting one fixed bar position.

The trade-off is complexity. An AV receiver is the system’s hub: it takes in audio and video from source devices, processes the signals, sends video to the display, and powers the speakers. Dolby calls a receiver with multiple speakers the choice for home-entertainment fans seeking an advanced home theater. That flexibility appeals to me; it will not suit every room or listener. Dolby’s Home Theater Setup Guide describes the roles and trade-offs.

| Consideration | Soundbar | Receiver and separate speakers |
|---|---|---|
| Physical footprint | One main enclosure, typically placed near the TV. | Several speakers plus a receiver; needs more room and suitable locations. |
| Installation and cabling | Fewer components and generally simpler setup. | More components, speaker connections, and placement decisions. |
| Speaker placement | Drivers stay together in the bar. | Individual speakers can be arranged and aimed for the room. |
| Configuration | Convenience is a central advantage. | More control over speaker layout and system choices. |
| Connections and power | Check the bar’s inputs and compatibility with your sources. | Check HDMI connections, receiver power for your room and speakers, and support for your sources and desired formats. |
These are category-level differences, not guarantees about every product. A particular soundbar may have separate wireless speakers, and receiver capabilities vary. Compare the connections and supported formats on the actual equipment you plan to use.

Which separate-speaker layout makes sense?
Start with 5.1
A 5.1 setup is a practical example for a first multichannel system: three front speakers (left, center, right), two surround speakers, and a subwoofer. Dolby notes that many DVD, Blu-ray, broadcast-TV, and streaming sources are available in 5.1. The exact experience still depends on the source, equipment, and setup. Dolby’s surround-sound speaker setup guides explain the channel layouts and placement.
Consider 7.1 for more directional effects
A 7.1 layout adds two speakers to the surround arrangement. Dolby says this can improve the directionality of effects, but 7.1 material is less universal than 5.1 in its guide. Extra channels are useful only if your room can accommodate the speakers and the content and equipment support the format.

Understand Atmos layout numbers
Numbers such as 5.1.2 describe different speaker roles: ear-level speakers, the subwoofer or low-frequency-effects channel, and height speakers. For example, the final number in 5.1.2 indicates two height speakers. Don’t assume that two products with the same advertised channel count use the same layout; check what the numbers mean and which speakers are included.
Placement matters as much as the speaker count
Separate speakers give you placement choices, but they do not guarantee better results if they are positioned carelessly. Dolby’s guidance is to keep a clear path to the speakers, aim them toward a central listening position, and adjust placement to suit the room. Furniture, walls, and the distance between seats and speakers can all constrain the layout.

Before choosing a system, identify where the main seat is and whether you can place speakers around it without blocking walkways or creating awkward cable runs. If the only practical location for every speaker is at the front of the room, a multi-speaker system may not deliver the room arrangement you want.
Check compatibility before buying components
- Map your sources: List the devices you connect, such as a game console, streaming device, or disc player, and confirm the receiver can connect to them.
- Check HDMI: Confirm the receiver has suitable HDMI connections for your display and sources. Dolby advises choosing up-to-date HDMI connectors.
- Match power to the setup: Check that the receiver has adequate power for the speakers and room. Dolby recommends adequate power, but the right choice depends on the actual system.
- Verify format support: Make sure the receiver and speakers support the audio formats and channel layout you intend to use.
- Plan speaker positions and cables: Confirm there is space for each speaker and a workable route for connections before settling on a layout.
Compatibility is a system question, not just a receiver specification. The display, source devices, receiver, speakers, and desired audio formats all need to work together.

When I would not choose this route
If space is tight, a soundbar’s small footprint and simpler setup may matter more than room-specific speaker placement. Dolby also recognizes a TV’s built-in speakers as an option, especially in smaller viewing environments; they are not necessarily a like-for-like surround replacement, but they avoid adding equipment. A receiver system makes the most sense when you have space for several components and actually want the control they provide.
