I Vibe-Coded a Website for Moods That Shouldn’t Exist

What happens when you ask an AI coding tool to build a site for feelings that shouldn’t exist? The answer is an iterative creative experiment, not a one-shot prompt.

I started with a deliberately strange idea: a website that gives names to feelings that sound impossible, like the calm of missing a train you never meant to catch. The point wasn’t to measure anyone’s mental health. It was to see whether I could turn a playful prompt into a small, surprising web experience by describing what I wanted, reviewing what the AI built, and asking for changes.

What I mean by “moods that shouldn’t exist”

These moods are invented labels for odd emotional combinations or unlikely situations—not clinical categories. A name can suggest a feeling without claiming that people experience it in a standardized way. That distinction shaped the project: the site could be poetic and evocative, but it shouldn’t present its results as diagnoses or psychological insight.

I kept the idea narrow: offer a mood name and a short line that gives it a little life. A color treatment can help make each result feel distinct, but the core experience is the surprise of encountering a phrase for a feeling that had no name a moment earlier.

What vibe coding actually involved

Vibe coding is not simply asking an AI to make a website and accepting whatever appears. It is a loop: describe an intention, let a coding tool generate or change code, run the result, judge whether it matches the intention, then refine the request. The person’s work shifts toward setting constraints, evaluating the output, and steering revisions.

A 2026 multivocal literature review describes vibe coding as iterative and intent-driven, with human evaluation guiding revision. It retained 47 sources—28 peer-reviewed and 19 grey-literature sources. Among those included sources, 21 of 47 (45%) reported short-term productivity or time-to-prototype gains. Those figures describe what the review found, not the odds that any individual project will succeed. Read the review.

How I shaped the first version

The useful starting point was a small interaction rather than a grand product plan: show a strange mood, explain it briefly, and make it pleasant to discover another. Before asking for a first pass, I needed to think about the boundaries too: the page should work on a phone, remain understandable, and avoid implying that its whimsical labels have clinical authority.

  1. Define the interaction. Decide what a visitor does and what the page returns. A one-click generator is a clearer first project than a generator, journal, account system, and analytics dashboard all at once.
  2. State constraints alongside the idea. Include mobile layout, readable text, accessible controls, and the intended tone in the request. “Make it quirky” is less actionable than describing the parts that should feel playful and the parts that must remain clear.
  3. Ask for a first pass, then run it. A rendered page is a starting point, not proof that the code behaves correctly or that the result matches the concept.
  4. Inspect specific shortcomings. Look for repeated or confusing outputs, controls that are hard to find, text that is difficult to read, and layouts that break at smaller widths.
  5. Revise against what you observed. Give the tool concrete changes and check the new result. Repeat until the interaction is coherent, rather than treating the first generated version as finished.

A documented quickstart for a vibe-coding platform describes a similar pattern—start from a template, iterate locally, preview, and publish. Its guide was marked updated September 2026. See the quickstart.

Where the idea can go: surprise or reflection

A mood generator and a mood tracker may use similar language, but they answer different needs. The generator is for a quick creative moment; a tracker asks someone to return, record experiences, and potentially keep a history. Those differences bring different decisions about scope and data.

Design direction Typical interaction What it asks of the builder
Playful mood generator Click to receive a coined mood, a short description, and perhaps a color treatment. Curate a set of outputs and make the moment of discovery work. A Devpost project documents a single-page HTML/CSS/JavaScript example that selects curated short texts and color gradients on each click. See Vibe Generator.
Mood journal or tracker Record a check-in and revisit entries, prompts, or visual history. Decide what gets saved, how users understand the record, and what privacy choices are needed. The public MoodJournal project describes five core labels, prompts, browser local storage, and visual history. See MoodJournal.
Richer emotion-tracking app Explore an emotion wheel or energy-and-pleasure grid, write journal entries, and review analytics or history. Support more ways to record and interpret information, with corresponding decisions about storage, export, offline use, and how the interface explains its limits. The public Emotion Wheel project documents these kinds of features. See Emotion Wheel.

These are product-design trade-offs inferred from the projects’ documented features, not measured outcomes. A fixed set of playful results can keep an experience lightweight and avoid collecting personal entries. Saving check-ins can make a tool more reflective, but it also means deciding what is stored and giving users a clear account of that choice.

What the finished idea can—and can’t—promise

A small creative site can make language feel fresh and invite a moment of recognition or amusement. It cannot establish that its invented moods are validated emotional categories, and a generated page that appears to work is not automatically reliable or maintainable.

The 2026 literature review finds stronger evidence for vibe coding in prototyping and user-interface work than in production, data-intensive, or safety-critical contexts. It also identifies gaps in evidence about maintainability and long-term quality. That makes a playful, bounded experiment a sensible use of the approach, while leaving more consequential software to deeper testing and engineering review. Read the review.
