I Use Claude Code and Codex Side by Side—So I Built a CLI to Hand Off Work

Moving a coding task between Claude Code and Codex CLI can mean rebuilding context from memory: what the goal was, which files changed, what failed, and what remains. hao li’s session-handover is a Python CLI designed to turn local session transcripts from either tool into a Markdown handover for the next session.

What session-handover does

In a September 30, 2026 DEV Community article, creator hao li describes a tool that reads local Claude Code and Codex CLI transcripts and produces a Markdown document intended to help continue work in another session. The appeal is practical: instead of asking the next assistant to infer the previous session from a bare prompt, the user can provide a structured account of what happened.

Li says Claude Code stores session JSONL files under ~/.claude/projects and Codex CLI stores per-day JSONL files under ~/.codex/sessions. The tool is described as walking those local transcript directories; the paths and commands below are the ones documented in the article and may change with later project versions.

What the handover contains

According to Li, the generated Markdown is meant to capture continuation details rather than produce a polished explanation of the work:

  • A timeline of activity, including file edits and commands.
  • Files touched and, in some cases, a git diff --stat summary.
  • Failed commands and tracebacks quoted verbatim.
  • Open items and a checklist of next steps.

Li says the extraction uses heuristics and no LLM. That makes it a record assembled from transcript content, not a reasoned account of why a particular design or implementation choice was made.

How the documented command flow works

The article shows this basic sequence:

  1. Install the Python package with pip install session-handover.
  2. Run session-handover list to see available sessions.
  3. Create a document for a chosen session with session-handover make --session <session-id> --out HANDOVER.md.
  4. Review the generated Markdown, correct or add missing context, and give it to the receiving coding session.

These are commands from the creator’s September 30, 2026 article, not an independently checked current installation guide. Check the project’s current documentation before relying on them.

What to check before trusting the output

Li characterizes the tool’s central limitation this way: “Heuristic, not intelligent: it summarizes what the transcript says, it doesn’t understand why decisions were made.” Read the handover before using it as the receiving session’s source of truth. In particular, verify the intended outcome, the current state of changed files, unresolved errors, and any next step where a wrong assumption could send work in the wrong direction.

Transcript formats are not documented guarantees and may change. Li says parsing is defensive and best-effort, especially for Codex; a format change can mean fewer details appear in the output. The article also says malformed lines are skipped and corrupt files may result in less detail rather than stopping a list operation. These are the creator’s descriptions, not independent tests of the parser.

Privacy and session ordering

Li says the tool processes local transcripts and sends nothing off the machine. Because the source files can contain project context, commands, and other session content, users should still treat both the original transcripts and generated handovers according to their own local data-handling practices.

The article notes that --last orders sessions by file modification time. If system clocks or file timestamps are skewed, that ordering can be misleading; check the selected session rather than assuming “last” means the session you intended.

What the reported tests establish

Li reports 11 smoke tests, including fake fixtures for both transcript formats and a malformed-input test intended to confirm the parser does not crash on garbage. This is an author-reported test count, not an independent quality assessment or proof that every real transcript format variation is handled.

When this kind of handoff helps

A transcript-derived handover is most useful when the receiving session needs concrete continuity: the task goal, touched files, commands already tried, failures, and the remaining checklist. It is less suitable as a substitute for human explanation when the critical context is a rationale that was never written down. The workflow is therefore best treated as a draft handoff: let the CLI collect the trace, then add or correct the reasoning and priorities before passing it along.
