Turning off Google Maps Timeline stops that device from saving new trips to Timeline. It does not, by itself, turn off every Google location feature or prove that 6 GB of storage was recovered. Google’s help pages explain how to disable or delete Timeline data, but they do not promise a particular storage gain. The 6 GB figure is the author’s reported result on one phone, not a typical or independently verified outcome.
What turning off Timeline actually does
Google Maps now calls its trip-history feature Timeline; some Google settings and help pages still use the older name “Location History.” When enabled, Timeline can automatically save visits and routes on signed-in devices. Google says Timeline is off by default.

Google Account Help puts the effect narrowly: “When Timeline is off, your device doesn’t save its location to your Timeline.” That stops future Timeline saving on the device. It is not a blanket switch for all location-related information associated with Google services.

How to turn off Timeline on Android
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial, then tap Your timeline.
- Tap More, then Location & privacy settings.
- Tap Timeline is on, then choose Turn off.
Google’s documented labels and menus may vary by app version or account. Google notes that some settings are rolling out, so look for the corresponding Timeline and location controls if the wording differs.

Turn off versus turn off and delete
These are different choices. Turning Timeline off prevents future Timeline saving; it does not itself remove the trip history already stored. If you want to remove existing records too, return to the Timeline settings and choose Turn off and delete activity. You can also use Delete all Timeline data or Delete range of Timeline data to manage existing records separately.

Timeline settings also offer auto-delete periods of 3, 18, or 36 months. Deletion may not remove copies on another device or in a backup. Google also cautions that deleting Timeline does not remove location data saved through other settings or services.

Does turning off Timeline free up 6 GB?
The author reports that turning off location history freed 6 GB on an Android phone. That is a single-device observation: no phone model, Android or Maps version, storage measurement category, before-and-after figures, or account of other cleanup actions is established here. Google’s documentation says Timeline data is saved on the device and describes an encrypted server backup, but does not quantify its storage footprint or say disabling Timeline will reclaim 6 GB.
Because turning Timeline off and deleting its existing data are separate actions, the switch alone should not be treated as a storage-cleanup command. To assess a storage change on your own phone, note the available space and the relevant storage category before and after; also record whether you only turned Timeline off, deleted Timeline records, or removed other data. Without those details, the reported 6 GB cannot be attributed specifically to the setting or generalized to other Android phones.

What to check if your goal is broader privacy
Google maintains separate controls for different kinds of location use. Turning off Timeline does not change Google Location Services, Location Sharing, or Find Hub. If Web & App Activity is on, Google says location-related information may still be saved when you use Google sites, apps, and services. Search Services History can include general-area or IP-derived location information, and photos may contain location depending on camera settings.
- Review Web & App Activity and related Search Services History controls in your Google Account if you want to manage activity saved from Google services.
- Check Android’s Location controls and Google Location Services separately.
- Review Location Sharing if you share your live location with other people.
- Check Find Hub settings if you use device-finding features.
- Review your camera’s location-tagging setting if you do not want location included with new photos.
These settings serve different purposes, so changing one does not automatically change the others.
