Android Authority reviewer Robert Triggs found it quick to set up and useful for spotting heat patterns around phones, chargers, PCs, appliances, and home windows. Its 256 × 192 native sensor, however, did not resolve individual PCB traces or components, and aligning its thermal and visible-light images could be finicky.
What the RISION Magic Pro does
The Magic Pro (model AF02) is a 24 g thermal-imaging module with a USB-C connector. Plug it into a supported device, open RISION’s app, and the host device supplies the display and power; the launch announcement says no separate battery is needed. Triggs describes setup in his October 5, 2026 Android Authority review as connecting the module, opening the app, and starting to use it.

That design makes it a portable screening tool, not a standalone camera or a diagnostic instrument that identifies the cause of a temperature pattern. It can help show where something is warmer or colder than its surroundings and where closer inspection may be warranted.

What the image can—and cannot—show
RISION lists a native sensor resolution of 256 × 192 and a QuadIR super-resolution output of 512 × 384. The latter is a manufacturer-stated processed output, not the sensor’s native resolution. Triggs found the native detail adequate to show what was hot on small devices and enclosures, but not enough to distinguish individual circuit-board traces or components. A higher output figure should not be taken as evidence that the camera can perform component-level electronics inspection.

These are product specifications, not all independently verified measurements from the cited review. The app offers spot, line, and area measurement options, according to Triggs.
Its Edge and Overlay mode combines thermal imagery with visible-camera detail, which can make it easier to orient an image. Triggs found close-up alignment sometimes finicky, particularly when his hands were unsteady. The overlay can add context, but it does not increase the thermal sensor’s native resolving power.

What Triggs found useful in a week of testing
Triggs reports using the Magic Pro on smartphones and other electronics and around the home during a week with the camera. He found it useful for quickly locating heat sources or temperature differences on phones, chargers, PCs, and appliances, as well as cold spots near windows. Those observations make the device most relevant to people who periodically want to visualize heat patterns, rather than people who need fine inspection of tiny components.
RISION describes the Magic Pro for electrical-panel analysis, HVAC diagnostics, mechanical-equipment inspection, automotive checks, and home inspection. Its launch announcement also describes functions such as temperature thresholds, waveform views, thermal photos that retain temperature data, video capture, and PDF reports. These are manufacturer-described capabilities; the review does not independently establish every workflow or its suitability for professional diagnosis.

How the Magic Pro compares with the RISION Magic
RISION’s product pages distinguish the standard Magic from the Pro primarily by resolution. Both are listed at 25 Hz and NETD ≤40 mK. The higher-resolution Pro may be preferable when you want more detail in broad thermal patterns, but Triggs’s test is a useful limit: it still did not reveal individual PCB traces or components.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Model | Native sensor | Super-resolution output | Best-supported distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| RISION Magic | 160 × 120 | 320 × 240 | Lower listed resolution; intended task complexity and specific close-up performance are not established by the cited review. |
| RISION Magic Pro | 256 × 192 | 512 × 384 | Higher listed resolution; reviewer found it useful for locating heat but not for resolving individual PCB traces or components. |
These model figures are from RISION’s product collection and FAQ. The available evidence does not establish that the Pro is suitable for detailed component diagnosis or quantify how much more useful it is for any particular inspection task.

Thermal images are clues, not diagnoses
A warmer area can point to a component or appliance worth checking; a cold patch near a window can prompt an investigation of the surrounding area. Neither pattern proves its cause. RISION’s FAQ says thermal cameras detect surface temperatures and cannot see directly through walls, glass, or water. An image may be consistent with missing insulation, moisture, air infiltration, or a heat source behind a surface, but it cannot by itself establish which explanation is correct.
For electrical panels, HVAC systems, or other situations where a wrong conclusion could create a safety risk, treat the camera as a screening aid and use a qualified professional for diagnosis. A thermal image does not replace electrical safety procedures, direct inspection, or appropriate measuring equipment.
Price and value
RISION’s August 3, 2026 launch announcement gave the Magic Pro a $299 MSRP and said Amazon-store availability was planned for late September 2026. Triggs’s review showed a roughly $249 Amazon-linked price, while RISION’s official site displayed a lower direct price when accessed. Those are dated, differing price references—not a guaranteed current price. Check the listing, market, stock, and return terms before buying.
Triggs’s assessment was that the module is convenient and capable for someone who regularly needs to visualize heat, but not an impulse purchase at its stated MSRP. Whether it makes sense depends on how often you will use thermal screening and whether its level of detail matches the job; it is a poor fit if you expect it to show individual PCB traces.
Quick Recap
What to check before buying
- Device fit: Confirm that your exact USB-C phone, tablet, or Windows computer works with the camera, app version, and required permissions.
- Task detail: Decide whether you need broad hot-and-cold patterns or fine component-level information. The cited review supports the former, not the latter.
- Measurement needs: Compare your intended temperatures with RISION’s stated −20°C to 600°C range and treat its ±2°C or ±2% accuracy as a manufacturer specification.
- Purchase terms: Verify current regional price, stock, warranty, and return conditions directly with the seller.
- Alternatives: For another thermal camera, compare native detector resolution, close-up or focus capability, measurement range and accuracy, supported connector and operating systems, app and export workflow, independent test results, warranty, and total price.
