Open Android DeX is an open-source project that presents a windowed Android workspace on a Windows, Mac, or Linux computer, using the phone to run Android apps. Its main setup uses a host-computer app and USB debugging; it does not require a separate monitor. The project also offers separate phone-only routes, including a launcher for a compatible HDMI display and an Ubuntu Linux environment.
What Open Android DeX does
The project’s idea is to give a phone a desktop-style interface on another screen. Its documentation describes resizable app windows, a taskbar, an app drawer, and notification access, while Android apps continue running on the phone. The project’s tagline is “Your phone is already a computer. This gives it a desktop.” That is the project’s description, not an independently verified performance claim.

Open Android DeX is not the same thing as Android’s built-in desktop windowing. Google says native desktop and connected-display features vary by device and manufacturer: a supported phone may mirror its screen or provide a separate desktop session. AOSP documentation likewise says desktop windowing depends on device configuration and an eligible external display. Open Android DeX’s broad compatibility statement describes its own software, not universal support for Android’s native desktop mode. Google’s Android connected-display guidance and AOSP desktop-mode documentation explain those platform distinctions.

The host-computer route is the clearest starting point if you already have a computer: the computer’s display becomes the workspace, so there is no need to purchase a monitor, dock, or HDMI adapter for that setup. For the phone-to-monitor route, an adapter is useful only if the phone supports wired display output. DroidDesk’s guide to USB-C display output makes that hardware caveat explicit; it is general accessory guidance, not documentation for Open Android DeX.

Set up the computer-connected version
- Get the host app. Open the Open Android DeX releases page and choose the build for your computer’s operating system. When checked on October 4, 2026, the latest listed release was v0.3.21, dated September 8, 2026; releases and available assets can change.
- Enable USB debugging. On the phone, enable Developer options and then USB debugging. Android’s menu labels and exact steps can vary by manufacturer.
- Connect and authorize. Attach the phone to the computer with a data-capable cable, or use the project’s Wi-Fi connection method. Accept the Android authorization prompt when it appears.
- Open the desktop workspace. The project says the host app installs what it needs on the phone. Follow the current app prompts to start the workspace and open Android apps in its desktop-style interface.
The project says it works with Android 8 or newer and does not require root. Treat that as the maintainers’ compatibility claim, not a guarantee for every model, manufacturer build, cable, or connection. If the phone does not appear, first check that USB debugging is enabled, the authorization prompt was accepted, and the cable supports data rather than charging only. Consult the project’s current instructions for its Wi-Fi path and platform-specific troubleshooting.
Phone-only monitor setup: check video output first
The releases page lists a launcher APK for showing the desktop on an HDMI monitor or within Samsung DeX. This route avoids using a computer as the host, but it depends on the phone being able to send video through its USB-C port. USB-C alone does not establish that capability. Check the exact model specifications before purchasing a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter; this accessory is not needed for the computer-connected route.

Licensing, cost, and what to verify
The project describes Open Android DeX as free, with no account or subscription, and licensed under GNU GPL version 3.0 or later. Its repository and releases are the authoritative places to verify current installers, APKs, setup instructions, and compatibility claims. The project’s claims about features and supported devices should not be read as independent testing results.
