A smart-home device can keep powering on and still stop being useful. Its app may lose access, a cloud service may shut down, a platform may drop compatibility, or security updates may end. Those are different kinds of “lasting,” and the title’s first-person framing should not imply specific devices or failures that have not been established.
How long do smart home devices last?
There is no single lifespan that answers the question. A device has at least four separate lifecycles:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Physical operation: whether the hardware still powers on and performs its basic task.
- App and cloud access: whether the manufacturer’s app, account, remote access, or online service still works.
- Compatibility: whether the device continues to work with current phones, hubs, voice assistants, or smart-home platforms.
- Security support: whether the manufacturer continues to provide security updates.
One lifecycle can end before another. A bulb might still turn on but no longer work with its app; a camera might remain physically intact while losing streaming and recording. A support promise is therefore not the same as a hardware-life estimate, warranty, or guarantee that every feature will remain available.
Why it can be hard to find an end date
In 2024, Federal Trade Commission staff reviewed 184 connected-product pages and found that 163—88.6%—did not disclose a software-support duration or end date. Staff also reported that a Google search did not identify this information for 124 of the 184 devices (67.4%). These figures describe disclosure in the reviewed sample, not how often devices fail or how long they physically last. The sample covered connected products broadly, not smart-home devices alone. When a support period is published, its meaning still depends on the terms: what updates are included, when the clock starts, and whether the policy applies to the exact model and configuration. A brand-level statement is not necessarily a promise for every product it sells.
Manufacturer support promises differ
These policies illustrate why it is important to compare the starting point and scope, not just the number of years. They are examples, not evidence that one brand’s hardware lasts longer than another’s.

| Manufacturer and policy | What the policy says | Important qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| IKEA, US smart-product policy | At least five years of support after purchase for smart products paired with DIRIGERA or TRÅDFRI, including app compatibility and security updates. Hubs receive at least three years of support. | IKEA says supported products can retain basic local functions after software support ends, such as switching lights on or off and raising or lowering blinds without internet. The policy has pairing and hub context. IKEA’s product support policy. |
| Philips Hue / Signify | The policy intends at least one year of major platform software updates where applicable, and at least five years total of specified security, quality, interoperability, and online-service/app compatibility support from purchase at an authorized reseller. | This is not a universal five-year guarantee or a warranty. Product and bridge qualifications apply; online-service compatibility depends on keeping the Bridge up to date and covers the last three released software versions. Philips Hue’s end-of-support policy. |
| Google Nest connected-home devices | At least five years of automatic security updates from the date Google starts selling the device on the US Google Store. | This is a security-update commitment, not a promise that every app, feature, or cloud service will continue for five years. Google lists model-specific start and minimum-end dates. Google’s security-update table. |
The practical comparison is: support duration, start date, update type, local versus cloud operation, app or hub dependence, and what remains when support ends. Read the policy for the exact model and region; a promise tied to a purchase at an authorized reseller, a particular hub, or an up-to-date bridge may not apply to another setup.
What service shutdowns can mean for hardware that still works
Dropcam: core camera functions ended
Google ended support for Dropcam and Dropcam Pro on April 8, 2024. Afterward, the cameras could no longer connect to the app, stream, or record video, and video history became unavailable. The case shows how a physically operating camera can lose its central purpose when the service it depends on disappears. Google’s Dropcam shutdown notice.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Wemo: outcomes depended on the device and setup
Belkin says cloud-dependent functions—including the Wemo app, remote access, and Alexa and Google Assistant integrations—stopped after January 31, 2026. Its notice distinguishes products configured with Apple HomeKit before that date and Thread-based products, which it says could continue functioning locally through HomeKit. It does not say every Wemo device stopped working; consult the notice’s affected-device list for the exact models and conditions. Belkin’s Wemo notice.
Revolv: a hub was made inoperable
An OECD report published in 2018 recounts how the Revolv home-automation hub was discontinued after Nest’s acquisition and later made inoperable, leaving owners with a device that no longer worked. It is a historical example of a service-dependent product becoming unusable, not a current product recommendation. OECD’s consumer policy report.

Check these things before buying
- Find the exact model’s support policy. Record the support start date, stated duration or end date, and which updates are included. Do not assume a generic brand FAQ covers the model you plan to buy.
- Check the conditions. See whether the policy depends on buying from an authorized seller, pairing with a named hub, using a specific app, keeping a bridge updated, or maintaining an online account.
- Identify what works locally. Ask which essential functions keep working if the internet or vendor’s servers are unavailable. Distinguish local controls from app, remote, voice-assistant, recording, or automation features that depend on cloud services.
- Look for the end-of-support path. Check whether the manufacturer explains what will stop, what remains, and whether migration or continued local use is possible.
- Verify compatibility before replacing or expanding a system. A hub helps only with devices in its supported ecosystem. IKEA’s DIRIGERA hub, for example, is relevant to compatible IKEA products; it is not a general way to restore unrelated discontinued devices.
What to do when a device loses smart functions
First, identify which part has ended: the physical device, its app, its cloud service, platform compatibility, or security support. Check the manufacturer’s shutdown or end-of-support notice for your exact model and configuration. If basic local operation remains, you may be able to keep using that function, but an unsupported connected device may no longer receive security updates. If the lost service was essential, look for a documented migration route and confirm that any replacement works with the rest of your setup before buying. A replacement plug, switch, bulb, or hub should be evaluated by model-level compatibility and support terms, not by category alone.

Loss of support is not only a question of whether an app still opens: security and privacy can also be affected when a connected product no longer receives updates. A NIST paper describes a survey of 412 smart-home users concerning loss of manufacturer support and its relationship to security and privacy. The study size and topic establish the scope of that work, but do not by themselves establish a percentage of users who held any particular view. Read the NIST paper.
