I Thought Asset Tracking Was Just GPS. I Was Wrong.

Asset tracking is more than a GPS dot. Learn what GPS, RFID, BLE, UWB and NB-IoT can tell you, and how to choose for the place and precision you need.

I thought asset tracking meant putting a GPS dot on a map. That works for some outdoor assets—but “tracking” can also mean recording when an item passes a doorway, seeing which building zone it is in, or finding it precisely inside a facility. GPS is one part of the answer, not the whole system.

What an asset-tracking system actually does

A tracking setup combines several layers. A tag or device is attached to the asset; a positioning or identification method determines what can be known about it; a communications path carries that information; and software presents it as a location, event, alert or history.

  • Tag or device: may be a battery-powered tracker, a passive label, or a small radio tag.
  • Positioning or identification: may use satellite signals, a reader scan, or nearby radio receivers.
  • Communications: gets a report to the system, using a network or local infrastructure as appropriate.
  • Software: turns reports into something useful, such as a last-seen record, inventory view or alert.

These layers answer different questions. “Where is it now?” may require frequent location reports. “When was it last seen?” may be answered by a scan at a known doorway. “What will it cost per asset at scale?” depends not just on the tag but on readers, connectivity, installation, maintenance and software.

Where GPS helps—and where it does not

GPS is useful when a tracker can receive satellite signals, especially outdoors under open sky. GPS.gov says typical GPS-enabled smartphones are accurate within a 4.9 m (16 ft.) radius under open sky; that is an example for smartphones, not a guarantee for every asset tracker. Accuracy can worsen near buildings, bridges and trees, and indoor or underground use can be unreliable when satellite signals are blocked or reflected.

  • SECURE TWO-WHEEL MONITORING – Use this motorcycle tracker for authorized bikes and powersport assets, with a built-in strong magnet, included screw mount, and weatherproof design for flexible vehicle placement.

A satellite accuracy figure also does not tell you how accurately a particular tracker will locate an asset. GPS.gov describes the U.S. government’s Standard Positioning Service commitment as a daily global average user range error (URE) of no more than 2.0 m (6.6 ft.), with 95% probability. URE is a signal-in-space measure, not a promise of device-level location accuracy. The result at a device also depends on satellite geometry, signal blockage, atmospheric conditions and receiver design or quality. See GPS.gov’s GPS Accuracy explanation.

GPS also provides positioning, not the entire reporting service. A tracker needs a way to transmit its position to the software a user checks. For vehicles or outdoor equipment, a GPS tracker can make sense if its communications method and power supply meet the job. It is not automatically the best choice for something kept inside a building.

What other tracking technologies can tell you

The useful question is not “Which technology is best?” but “What kind of location evidence do I need in this environment?” The following distinctions are described in PenguinIN’s 2024 Buyer’s Guide for Asset Tracking; its guidance is healthcare-oriented, so deployment details may differ in other settings.

Technology What it can answer Main limitation
GPS/GNSS Where an asset is outdoors when satellite reception and the tracker’s reporting path are available. Satellite visibility and receiver quality affect positioning; positioning alone does not explain how reports reach the user.
Passive RFID Whether an item was identified as it passed a reader or controlled scan point. A scan is an event, not continuous location between readers.
Active RFID Which zone a powered tag is in when receivers can hear it. Requires powered tags and receiver infrastructure.
BLE Facility or proximity visibility using low-power tags and compatible receivers or infrastructure. Coverage and location quality depend on the installed system; signal-strength approaches have limits.
UWB Accurate ranging where indoor precision is valuable. Power use, cost and dedicated infrastructure can make broad deployment harder.
NB-IoT Low-power cellular connectivity for applications that do not need precise location. A low-power connection does not, by itself, provide precise location.

Think in terms of evidence, not just a map

A passive RFID record can establish that a tagged item crossed a monitored point; it cannot show every place the item went afterward. A BLE or active RFID system can provide facility visibility, but what “location” means depends on receiver placement and the software’s interpretation. UWB can support more precise indoor ranging, at the cost of additional infrastructure and power considerations. A GPS tracker may report outdoor coordinates, but it still needs suitable reception and a communications route.

How to choose a system that fits the job

Start with the operational question and the acceptable answer, then work through coverage and lifecycle requirements. A comparison of technologies is useful only when each option is evaluated against the same needs.

  1. Define the location granularity. Decide whether you need a scan event, a zone, a room, a location within a few metres, or finer indoor precision. Do not pay for precision the workflow cannot use.
  2. Map the environment. List where the asset spends time: outdoors, indoors, underground, in vehicles, or across several environments. Identify likely obstructions and the places readers, gateways or anchors could be installed.
  3. Set the update cadence. Specify how quickly a new location or “last seen” event must appear. A system suited to periodic inventory checks may not suit a moving asset that requires frequent reports.
  4. Check asset power and tag maintenance. Determine whether tags need batteries, how often they must be serviced, and whether the asset can supply power. Include the work of replacing or recharging batteries.
  5. Account for infrastructure and off-site reporting. List required readers, gateways or anchors, then determine how information travels beyond the site. Check coverage in the actual operating areas rather than assuming a technology label guarantees it.
  6. Verify software fit before deployment. Confirm integration with inventory, maintenance and alerting systems, along with history, bulk management and the workflows staff need. Ask how data can be exported and what happens if you later change vendors.
  7. Calculate lifecycle cost per asset. Include tags, readers and installation, connectivity, software, battery service, support and expansion—not just the unit price of a tag. Compare the cost at the planned scale.

Bring the people who will use and maintain the system into the decision. PenguinIN’s 2024 guide advises surveying stakeholders about pain points and compliance requirements, then prioritizing needs. That helps distinguish a genuine requirement—such as knowing which zone holds a device—from a feature that sounds attractive but will not change the workflow.

Why consumer finders are not automatically enterprise tracking

A consumer item finder can be convenient for locating personal belongings, but that does not make it an asset-management platform. In a comparison published on April 28, 2025, IoT For All said it benchmarked cellular GPS, RFID, BLE trackers and Apple AirTags over six months for mobile, unpowered assets. The publication reported that AirTags by themselves lacked asset naming and grouping, geofencing, bulk management, alerting and integrations. That is IoT For All’s assessment of the products and setup it tested, not a universal verdict about every consumer tag or every surrounding app and service. Its broader takeaway is that consumer finders and enterprise tracking solve different management problems: IoT For All’s asset-tracking comparison.

When a hybrid system makes more sense

Assets often move between environments, so one method may not provide useful evidence everywhere. A warehouse might use passive RFID at receiving and dispatch points, BLE or active RFID for zone visibility indoors, and GPS for vehicles or equipment traveling outside the facility. The software can bring those events together, provided the tags, infrastructure and integrations are compatible.

That does not mean every operation needs several technologies. A small set of well-placed scan points may answer an inventory question more cheaply than continuous tracking. Conversely, a “last seen at the loading door” record is not enough if staff need to locate a critical item inside a large building. Match the system to the decision people need to make when an asset is missing or due for service.
