I Stopped Using Regular File Managers After Finding Material Files

Material Files combines Android file management, archive tools, and FTP, SFTP, SMB, and WebDAV access. Here’s what it supports—and what its DocumentsUI limitation means.

The app in the headline is Material Files, an open-source Android file manager by Hai Zhang. Akshay Bhalla’s personal recommendation is that it offers a useful alternative to file managers he found weighed down by ads or subscriptions—especially for moving files between a phone, computer, and NAS. The no-ads and no-subscription description is his report, not an independent audit.

Why Material Files stood out

Bhalla says he switched because Material Files combines everyday file management with network transfers. In his setup, he used FTP to move files between his phone and computer, and SMB to connect to a Synology NAS. That gave him a way to transfer files without routing that workflow through a cloud service. It is one user’s setup, not a guarantee of speed or compatibility with every network or NAS.

A NAS is optional: Material Files can be used for ordinary on-device file management without one. The app’s Google Play listing describes it as an open-source Material Design file manager with local file tools and network-server access.

What the app can do

  • Browse files: breadcrumb navigation helps move through folder paths.
  • Work with archives: view, extract, and create common compressed archives.
  • Customize its appearance: choose colors and night mode.
  • Connect to servers: the listing names FTP, SFTP, SMB, and WebDAV.
  • Use root access: root access is listed as a feature, for devices and workflows where it is available.

The official project repository says the app supports Android 5.0 and later. Root access is not a prerequisite for basic file browsing or network connections.

What “no ads or subscription” means here

Bhalla describes Material Files as having no ads, subscription unlocks, in-app purchases, or telemetry tracking. Those are claims from his article, rather than independently verified findings. The Google Play Data safety panel is a separate, developer-provided declaration: it says no data is shared with third parties, but also says the app may collect app info and performance data and device or other IDs, and that data is encrypted in transit. That panel is not an independent privacy audit.

Check the DocumentsUI and storage workflow you need

Material Files is not intended to replace Android’s DocumentsUI, according to the project repository. It relies on DocumentsUI for some tasks, including granting access to an external SD card. If your file routine depends on a particular document picker or external-storage flow, test it on your Android device before making the app your default manager.

How to decide whether it fits

Compare file managers against the work you actually do rather than assuming one app is best for everyone. For Material Files, the documented capabilities and limitations to check are:

  • Whether its reported no-ad, no-subscription model matches your expectations.
  • Whether its local file operations and archive tools cover your needs.
  • Whether you need FTP, SFTP, SMB, or WebDAV, and whether your server is configured for that protocol.
  • Whether root access matters for your device and tasks.
  • Whether your Android version meets the stated Android 5.0 minimum.
  • Whether its use of Android DocumentsUI works with your external-storage workflow.

These features make Material Files a plausible lightweight file manager for Android users who want local tools and direct server access. They do not establish that it is better than every competing file manager.
