It supports Microsoft’s DOCX, XLSX and PPTX formats, and it may suit people who regularly exchange those files. But the claim that it handles them “so much better” than LibreOffice is a personal judgment, not a result established by an independent comparison. Both suites support Microsoft Office formats, and compatibility depends on what a file contains.
What ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors supports
ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors includes tools for text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, forms and PDFs. It is available for Windows, Linux and macOS. The vendor’s documentation lists DOCX, XLSX and PPTX alongside OpenDocument formats such as ODT, ODS and ODP, as well as CSV. The desktop application can edit local documents without a constant internet connection. Connecting to selected cloud platforms enables collaboration, so offline editing and cloud teamwork are distinct use cases rather than contradictory claims. The software is open source under the GNU AGPL version 3 license; its public repository lists desktop distribution options including DEB, RPM, EXE, DMG, Snap, Flatpak and AppImage.
Does it handle Microsoft files better than LibreOffice?
The available product documentation establishes format support, not a universal winner. LibreOffice’s help says Writer, Calc and Impress can open and save DOC/DOCX, XLS/XLSX and PPT/PPTX files. That means switching suites is not necessary simply to open or save a Microsoft-format document.

Nor does a shared file extension guarantee identical behavior. Microsoft explains that applications may not support every feature in a format and that differences in implementation can alter files or lose content. Its guidance calls Open XML formats—including DOCX, XLSX and PPTX—the default in supported Office versions. No independent compatibility score or controlled head-to-head comparison is established by these sources. Whether ONLYOFFICE works better for you depends on the files and features you actually use—not just whether both applications list DOCX, XLSX or PPTX as supported.

What to test before switching
Use copies of representative files and inspect the results in the application where they will ultimately be used. A small sample can expose differences that a blank document will not.

- XLSX workbooks: Verify formulas, charts, data features and the results of important calculations.
- PPTX presentations: Review slide layouts, fonts, effects and any media or linked content.
- Macros: Identify macro-enabled files and test the actual workflow separately. Microsoft distinguishes DOCM and XLSM, which can contain VBA, from DOCX and XLSX, which cannot store VBA macro code. LibreOffice also notes that its macro behavior is not generally identical to Microsoft Office’s; some Excel VBA scripts may run if the relevant option is enabled. For critical documents, check both how they look and whether they still behave correctly after editing and saving. Pay particular attention to fonts, formulas, macros and linked material, since a file can open successfully without preserving every feature or detail.

When ONLYOFFICE may be a good fit
Try ONLYOFFICE if you work locally, want an open-source desktop suite, and often exchange DOCX, XLSX or PPTX files. Its support for common Microsoft and OpenDocument formats makes it a practical option to evaluate, while selected cloud connections are available for collaborative work.
Organizations with deployment or migration needs can also review ONLYOFFICE’s enterprise offering, which the vendor describes as including service-level agreements, technical support, deployment guidance and migration assistance for matters such as macros, legacy formats and fonts. Those services are separate from what the desktop editors’ format list alone establishes.

How to decide for your own files
- Make copies of the DOCX, XLSX and PPTX files you use most often.
- Open and edit each copy in ONLYOFFICE, then save it in its existing format.
- Reopen the saved files in the application used by your colleagues or recipients and inspect layout, calculations, slides and macros where relevant.
- Compare the results with LibreOffice using the same files and tasks. Keep the suite that best preserves the features your work depends on.
If both suites handle your files acceptably, choose based on practical needs such as workflow, collaboration and deployment—not an assumed compatibility ranking.
