I used to screenshot an error message, move the image somewhere else, and then explain what I was looking at. The more direct workflow is to give a terminal agent the error text and relevant project context, with a local model providing the response. The important distinction: a local model cannot see your terminal on its own. A runtime and an interface have to pass it the text or make tools available.
What “wiring a local model into my terminal” means
A model running on your computer does not automatically read the terminal, inspect your project, or run commands. A local runtime such as Ollama or LM Studio serves the model; a terminal interface or agent connects to that runtime and supplies prompts, terminal output, or tool context. Open Interpreter documents connections to both runtimes, along with agent capabilities such as inspecting a repository, running commands, editing files, reviewing diffs, and resuming a session: Open Interpreter’s local-model guide and Open Interpreter documentation.

That arrangement changes the handoff. Instead of capturing an error visually and transferring it, you can paste the text into the agent or ask it to inspect a relevant file or command output. The model can then help explain a likely cause or suggest a diagnostic step. Its response is a suggestion, not proof that it ran a command, understood the whole project, or fixed anything.

How to use a local LLM in your terminal
Open Interpreter’s documented setup provides one concrete example. The precise commands and provider support can change, so check the linked guide for the version you install.

- Install and start a local runtime. Choose Ollama or LM Studio, install it for your operating system, and make sure its model-serving service is running before starting the terminal agent.
- Open the project you want to work on. Start the terminal session from the project directory if you want the agent to work with that repository’s files.
- Launch Open Interpreter with the selected provider. The guide lists
interpreter --oss --local-provider ollamafor Ollama andinterpreter --oss --local-provider lm_studiofor LM Studio. Its documented default endpoints arehttp://localhost:11434/v1for Ollama andhttp://localhost:1234/v1for LM Studio. If the service uses a different host or endpoint, consult the current guide for endpoint configuration. - Give it a specific diagnostic request. Include the complete error text and the command or action that produced it. Add the smallest relevant surrounding context, such as the file involved or the steps immediately before the failure. Ask for an explanation or a next diagnostic step before authorizing edits or commands.
- Verify what happened. Read command output, inspect the expected file or diff, and run the relevant check yourself. Text that looks like a tool call is not evidence that a tool actually ran.
Can a local model explain terminal errors?
It can attempt to explain an error when the terminal interface passes the message to it. Its usefulness depends on the supplied context and the model’s ability to interpret it; the documentation reviewed does not establish that any model will diagnose or repair a particular error correctly. Give it the exact output rather than a cropped image when possible, and include the command and relevant project details that distinguish one failure from another.
Tool-using agents also need context for their own instructions and tool schemas, not just your question. Open Interpreter warns that prompt truncation can cause a model to guess, print a tool call as ordinary text, or tell you to run a command instead of invoking it. If behavior looks inconsistent, check whether the model is receiving enough context and whether the interface actually executed the requested tool.

Choose a provider by compatibility, not a blanket winner
Open Interpreter documents both Ollama and LM Studio as local-provider options, but the available evidence does not establish a universal best choice or a performance comparison. Check the details that affect your setup:
- Endpoint and model compatibility: confirm that the agent can connect to the runtime and that the selected model works with its expected interface.
- Context behavior: check the model’s context window and whether the agent’s instructions and tool definitions fit within it.
- Tool handling: establish how the interface signals and executes tool calls, and how it reports their results.
- Your environment: use the current runtime and agent documentation for your operating system and installed versions rather than assuming identical setup steps.
Ollama’s January 23, 2026 announcement of ollama launch describes setup for selected coding tools, including Claude Code, OpenCode, and Codex, with local or cloud models. It recommends a context setting of at least 64,000 tokens for coding tools. That is Ollama’s dated recommendation for those tools, not a universal minimum or a guarantee that a model will use tools correctly: Ollama’s announcement.

Keep terminal-agent actions bounded
A terminal agent may be able to execute commands and edit files, so decide what it is allowed to do before handing it a project. Open Interpreter documents read-only, workspace-write, and danger-full-access sandbox choices, as well as approval policies; its documentation labels --yolo, which bypasses safeguards, dangerous. Start with the narrowest access that suits the task, review proposed actions, and inspect changes before relying on them: Open Interpreter documentation. OpenAI’s local-shell guidance likewise recommends sandboxing, resource limits, scrutiny of high-risk commands, and logs: Local shell tool guidance.
Local inference describes where the selected model endpoint runs. It does not establish that every part of an application, extension, telemetry path, or network connection stays on your machine. Check the behavior and settings of the runtime and interface you use rather than treating “local model” as a blanket privacy guarantee.

When the setup fails
The agent cannot connect
Confirm that the local service is running and that the agent is using the right provider and endpoint. The documented defaults are http://localhost:11434/v1 for Ollama and http://localhost:1234/v1 for LM Studio; a changed port or remote host requires the corresponding endpoint configuration in the current guide.

Check whether the prompt, agent instructions, and tool schemas fit in the model’s context, and whether the interface reports an actual tool invocation. A written command or tool call is not the same as execution. Verify results directly in the terminal and project.

The runtime does not find or use the expected hardware
Ollama’s troubleshooting documentation directs users to logs and covers GPU discovery, driver and container configuration, and device permissions. Consult its current troubleshooting material for your platform before trying platform-specific fixes: Ollama troubleshooting.
