Proton Mail, DuckDuckGo’s browser and email forwarding, and Signal each offer a free option for a different task. Their free tiers have limits, and provider descriptions are not independent proof that an app is secure or right for every threat model.
What these free privacy apps actually cover
These services are not interchangeable. Proton Mail is an email service; DuckDuckGo’s browser helps limit tracking while you browse, and its Email Protection service forwards messages to an existing inbox; Signal is for messaging. The choice is less about finding one app that makes you private everywhere and more about matching a tool to a specific need.

| Service | Free use described by the provider | Does it replace an existing service? | Documented limit or scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proton Mail | Encrypted email | Yes; it is an email account | Proton lists 500 MB of Mail storage, expandable to 1 GB through onboarding actions. See Proton’s pricing page for current terms. |
| DuckDuckGo browser | Web browsing with privacy protections | It can serve as your browser | DuckDuckGo lists Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android availability; individual features vary by platform. See its privacy protections help page. |
| DuckDuckGo Email Protection | Email forwarding, tracker removal, and private addresses | No; it forwards to an inbox you already use | It adds a layer to existing email rather than providing a replacement mailbox. See DuckDuckGo’s Email Protection help page. |
| Signal | Text and sharing voice messages, photos, videos, GIFs, and files | It can serve as a messaging app | Signal’s homepage says these uses are free; this evidence does not establish a feature-by-feature security comparison. See Signal. |
The comparison is based on what the providers document, not a direct independent test of features, privacy practices, or security.

Proton Mail: free encrypted email, with a small storage allowance
Proton says free accounts receive the same level of encryption as its paid plans. Its pricing page lists 500 MB of Mail storage, which can be increased to 1 GB by completing items in the “Get started with Proton” checklist. The allowance is easy to overlook if you are comparing only encryption: storage, available addresses, custom domains, and message limits are among the areas where paid plans add features. Check the current pricing page before choosing, since plan details can change.

Proton describes Mail as ad-free and funded by paid subscriptions. It also says its services use zero-access encryption, are open source, and are independently audited. Those are Proton’s descriptions; they are not a substitute for reviewing relevant audit reports or evaluating whether the service fits your needs. DuckDuckGo: a browser plus a separate email-tracking layer
Browser protections
DuckDuckGo describes its free browser as available for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. Its help page lists Global Privacy Control, a signal that communicates opt-out preferences to websites. On Android, DuckDuckGo says App Tracking Protection can block third-party trackers in other apps. These protections are not identical across platforms, so check the current platform details and settings in the official help page.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Email Protection is forwarding, not a new mailbox
DuckDuckGo Email Protection is a free forwarding service: it can remove multiple types of hidden email trackers and let you create private addresses that forward to an inbox you already use. That makes it useful when you want to share an alternate address without moving your email to a new provider. It does not replace that inbox in the way a Proton Mail account can.

What DuckDuckGo says it processes
DuckDuckGo’s privacy policy says it does not sell personal information. It also describes sharing anonymous information, such as browser and device types, with hosting and content providers to operate its products. That is not the same as saying the service processes no information. The policy was last updated June 3, 2026; read the full policy for its stated practices.
Signal: free messaging for text and media
Signal’s homepage says users can share text, voice messages, photos, videos, GIFs, and files for free, and presents privacy as a default. That makes it an option for everyday messaging without a subscription charge. The available evidence here does not establish a technical comparison with other messengers or independently verify security claims, so do not treat the word “private” as a complete threat-model assessment.

How to choose without paying for features you do not need
- For a new email account: consider Proton Mail if its free storage and account limits suit your usage. Check the current allowance before moving important mail.
- For web browsing: try DuckDuckGo’s browser on your platform, then review which protections are available and enabled there.
- To reduce tracking from addresses you share: use DuckDuckGo Email Protection as a forwarding layer if keeping your existing inbox matters.
- For messaging: Signal’s stated free text and media sharing covers common communication needs; assess whether its features and protections match the people you need to reach.
- Upgrade only at a real boundary: more storage, addresses, custom domains, or other paid-plan features may justify paying if you actually need them. A free tier’s existence alone does not mean it will meet every requirement.
“Free” here means no charge for the described service or tier, not a blanket privacy guarantee. These options address different parts of everyday digital life, and vendor descriptions establish what providers say they offer—not how they perform in every situation.
