How Obtainium decides an update exists
The tracking logic is simple to state. Obtainium compares the version Android reports for an installed app with the version reported by that app’s source. When the source version is newer, the app is flagged as updatable. The update tracking documentation describes this comparison.
That comparison explains most of the app’s behavior, including its limits. If an app’s published version string does not map cleanly onto the version Android stores for the installed package, the comparison can be off. Treat an unexpected “update available” or a missing update as a prompt to open the app’s source page and check it yourself.

The practical consequence is that a GitHub or GitLab app is usually the most dependable entry on your list, while a scraped download page is the one most likely to stop updating without warning. Keep that in mind before assuming a source will keep working.

Setting up your update list
The workflow is short, but each step affects whether the results are trustworthy.
- Add the app by its source, such as the repository’s releases location or the direct APK link, in Obtainium’s add-app flow.
- Before relying on the entry, confirm that the app name, version, and source Obtainium shows match what you expect from the developer’s own page.
- Open the settings described in the interface and settings overview and choose the update checking and background options that suit your device and battery habits.
- Watch the first real update cycle. Confirm that the notification arrives and that the install behaves as you expect before you rely on the list for every app.
Does Obtainium install updates automatically?
Not in a guaranteed, unattended way. Update checks and background behavior are configurable, and the project documents scheduling and related controls. But the official material does not support promising that every update will install without you in every setup. Source configuration and Android’s own behavior, including install prompts and permission settings, affect what happens.

A realistic expectation is this: Obtainium checks on the schedule you configure, notifies you when a source shows a newer release, and can download and install updates where the source supports it. Some sources may give you a notification without a direct download and install. Plan for occasional manual confirmation rather than a fully silent system.

Is Obtainium safe?
Obtainium is a tool for tracking and installing software. It does not certify that an app or source is safe, and it does not validate every APK it can reach. That means the app is only as trustworthy as the sources you add. A reasonable checklist:
- Prefer the developer’s own release page over a mirror, aggregator, or unfamiliar site.
- Where practical, check the package and its signing identity against what the developer publishes.
- Treat a third-party configuration file or shared source list as a convenience, not as proof that the app is legitimate.
- Be most cautious with scraped HTML pages, since they are also the most likely to change in ways you did not check.
None of this makes Obtainium unsafe. It means the trust decision moves from the app store to you, and Obtainium makes that decision faster without making it for you.

The evidence does not show that Obtainium is safer or better than a store. Its advantage is that it centralizes checking across sources you have already chosen, which is exactly the part most people skip.
