YouTube has no switch that turns recommendations off. It does provide controls over some of the signals it uses to suggest videos, along with several ways to find videos that do not depend on Home or Up Next. Shifting how you use those tools, and choosing your entry points on purpose, is the realistic version of taking back control. It also has trade-offs, mainly in how much you stumble onto things you did not go looking for.
What YouTube lets you control
YouTube’s Help center page “Manage your recommendations & search results” describes the tools below as of October 2026. Labels and placement can differ between the website, the mobile app, and smart TVs, and some options require you to be signed in. If a menu item is missing on your device, check the app version before assuming the feature does not exist.

“Not interested” feedback
Open the menu beside a recommended video (usually shown as three dots) and choose “Not interested.” YouTube says you can also give a reason. This tells the system that you do not want that specific video, and it does not remove the channel’s other uploads from your suggestions.

Where this option is offered, it signals that you do not want any videos from that channel suggested. It is the stronger version of the feedback above and is the one to use when a single creator keeps appearing.

Removing items from watch and search history
You can remove individual videos from your watch history or your search history. YouTube says history can affect recommendations and other parts of the experience, so deleting one item changes only that one input, not your overall profile.
Pausing or deleting history
Watch history and search history can be paused or deleted through your Google Account activity controls. Pausing stops new activity from being recorded; deleting clears what is already stored. Either choice reduces the signals available to YouTube, which is the point of the change, but it also removes the memory that powers the personalized parts of the site.

Why the same control behaves differently on each surface
YouTube’s Help page “How YouTube recommendations work” states that watch history is the primary signal for recommendations on Home. For Up Next, the panel beside a playing video, the main signal is the video you are currently watching. In practice, this means pausing watch history does not cut off every form of influence. Up Next still reacts to what is on screen.

Watch time is not described as the sole driver, and the company does not publish how these signals are weighted. Treat any simple formula you read elsewhere as an guess unless YouTube itself documents it.

Two ways into YouTube
The change in this story comes down to choosing between two routes. Neither is objectively better for every viewer.
| Factor | Personalized path (Home and Up Next) | Deliberate path (search, subscriptions, Explore) |
|---|---|---|
| Main input | Watch history on Home; the current video on Up Next | The words you type, the channels you subscribe to, and the categories you browse in Explore |
| What you tend to see | Suggestions shaped by past viewing, feedback, and the video you are watching | Results you asked for, or uploads from channels you chose to follow |
| Discovery | Broader and less predictable; good for stumbling onto new topics | Narrower and intentional; you find what you already know to look for |
| Common downside | Repetition and drift toward what you already watch | You can miss subjects outside your existing interests |
| Effort required | Little beyond normal use | Ongoing: you must decide what to search for, follow, or browse |
What Home looks like without watch history
YouTube’s Help page says that when watch history is off and there is no significant prior history, Home shows the search bar and the left-side menu rather than video recommendations. Search, your subscribed channels, and Explore then become the main ways to find videos. This is a documented outcome for accounts in that state. It is not a guarantee that every account, device, or interface will look the same.

Setting up a deliberate routine
- Decide what history should do. Keep it on if you want Home to reflect your interests. Pause it if you want Home to stop reflecting past viewing.
- Clean up the history you already have. Open your History page from the left-side menu and remove videos that no longer reflect what you want to see. Watching something by accident is the most common source of unwanted suggestions.
- Mark unwanted suggestions. Use “Not interested” for single videos and “Don’t recommend channel” where it is offered for creators you want out of your feed.
- Subscribe to what you want to follow. Subscriptions are the most direct way to see new uploads from creators you have chosen, without relying on Home to surface them.
- Search with a goal. Type a specific question or title rather than browsing Home for something to watch. Use Explore when you want to browse a category on purpose.
- If you pause history for a session, resume it afterward if you want it back. YouTube itself suggests this, since paused activity is not recorded.
What gets harder
- Finding creators you have never heard of. Home is where most unfamiliar channels appear, so a quieter Home means you need to seek them out.
- Remembering what you wanted to watch. Without a feed to resurface a video, you need a watch-later habit or a note of titles.
- Keeping subscriptions current. A list of channels you forgot to follow will not fill itself.
- Accepting some stumbling. Less personalization means fewer happy accidents, along with fewer unwanted ones.
What the public record does and does not establish
- No complete formula is published. YouTube names signals and surfaces, not how much each one counts.
- Watch time is not the sole driver. The company lists several signals, and no single one is described as dominant.
- The “recommendations drive more viewership” claim is qualitative. YouTube’s blog post “On YouTube’s recommendation system” says recommendations drive more overall viewership than subscriptions or search. It gives no figure, and the copy available at the time of writing shows no publication date, so it should not be quoted as a statistic.
- Stated goals are not proof of outcomes. YouTube says its system is designed to help videos find audiences. That is the company’s aim, not independent evidence that every recommendation serves the viewer.
- Behavior may vary by viewer. YouTube’s descriptions do not establish that the system acts identically for everyone.
Judging the change for yourself
The only reliable test is your own viewing. Before changing settings, note roughly how often you return to Home, how many of the videos you start you finish, and how long it takes you to find something worth watching. Repeat those checks after a few weeks on the new routine. Compare how many new creators you discovered, not only how much you watched. If the deliberate path leaves you finding less that you want, you can turn history back on, and nothing about the change is permanent.
The honest verdict is narrower than the headline. Pausing history, removing feedback, and choosing search, subscriptions, and Explore give you real control over the inputs that shape your feed. They do not make recommendations disappear, and they trade serendipity for intention. For viewers who want fewer surprises and more deliberate choices, that trade is often worth making.
