Windows filesystem compression can reclaim space without uninstalling a game or turning it into a ZIP archive. In my case, compressing games added up to 300GB saved—but that is my result, not a typical figure or a promise for another library. The mistake was treating one impressive total as a reason to compress everything.
A better approach is selective: check what each game actually saves, avoid titles CompactGUI flags as incompatible, then play the compressed games on your own PC and compare the experience before doing more.
What game compression does—and what it does not do
CompactGUI is a graphical interface for Windows filesystem compression. Rather than making a separate archive that you must extract before playing, it compresses files in place; Windows transparently decompresses them when ordinary programs access them. The game remains available through its normal folder and launch path. See the CompactGUI project documentation for its description of how the tool works.
That convenience does not mean every game shrinks equally. Some files compress well; others yield little space because their data is already compressed or otherwise resists further compression. Microsoft cautions that compression performance comparisons are approximate and can depend on the input data and algorithm in its Compression API documentation. Treat the space recovered as a per-game result, not a fixed percentage you can apply to an entire library.

Why compressing everything was the wrong move
A library-wide total hides the trade-offs
A large combined saving tells you how much space you reclaimed, but not whether each game was worth compressing. A game that saves little may not justify changing its storage behavior, while another may free enough space to be useful. Nor does a storage figure tell you how the game will behave on your particular processor and drive.
The Microsoft documentation describes input- and algorithm-dependent performance, but it does not establish a universal FPS cost or loading-time change for compressed games. The sources available here do not provide controlled comparisons across games, CPUs, drives, and compression methods. Without measurements for a specific game and system, claims such as “no impact” or “slower loads by a fixed amount” are not justified.

DirectStorage needs a specific compatibility check
CompactGUI’s project documentation cautions: “This tool should not be used on games that utilise DirectStorage on Windows 11.” That is the project’s guidance for using its tool, not evidence that filesystem compression breaks every modern game. Check the project’s current compatibility guidance and the game’s requirements before applying compression.
DirectStorage is a game asset-loading technology, not another name for filesystem compression. Microsoft’s DirectStorage overview explains that developers can use in-place decompression and choose a method that balances compression ratio with performance. That developer-controlled asset pipeline is distinct from a user compressing already-installed files through Windows. The two can intersect in a game’s storage path, which is why CompactGUI’s warning matters, but it should not be expanded into a blanket claim about all newer games.

How to decide which games to compress
- Choose one game, not the whole library. Start with a title that is not covered by CompactGUI’s DirectStorage-on-Windows-11 warning.
- Record the starting size and available space. Note the game folder’s size before compression so the result is a meaningful per-game comparison.
- Use CompactGUI on that game’s folder. The project presents the utility for game and program folders; it says whole drives and full Windows installations are outside its scope.
- Compare the resulting folder size. Keep the actual saving you observe, rather than assuming another game will achieve the same ratio.
- Play the game as you normally would. Check launch, loading, and gameplay on your own system. If something behaves poorly, stop compressing additional games and consult the project’s documentation for current guidance.
- Repeat only when the trade-off is worthwhile. The point is to reclaim useful space with acceptable behavior, not to maximize a library-wide number.
Updated or newly installed files may need separate attention because a one-time compression pass does not establish how future game updates will be handled. Check the tool’s current documentation and inspect a game again after updates rather than assuming its entire folder remains in the same state.
Should you compress your whole Steam library?
Not by default. A whole-library approach applies one decision to games with different file types, storage behavior, and compatibility considerations. Selecting individual game folders lets you see the actual storage recovery and test normal use before expanding the change. CompactGUI also says it is not intended to compress whole drives or a full Windows installation; its repository points to Windows’ separate compact /compactOS command for Windows system compression, not as a recommendation to compress an entire game drive.

When adding storage is the better answer
If selective compression does not recover enough space, adding an SSD may be simpler than changing how many installed games are stored. Whether that is practical depends on your PC’s motherboard or laptop, available interface, and capacity needs. The sources cited here do not establish a particular drive model, price, or compatibility, so check your device specifications before buying.
For a few games, compression can be a useful way to stretch existing storage. For a large library or games where compatibility and performance matter more than saving space, additional capacity may be the cleaner solution.

Examples are not a forecast for your library
A July 25, 2026 Tom’s Hardware report gave game-specific examples attributed to Game Compressor coverage: ARK: Survival Evolved reportedly went from 169 GB to 91 GB, or 54% of its original size, and Crimson Desert reportedly saved 32 GB. Those are reported examples, not independent benchmarks, and they do not verify the 300GB figure in this account or predict what another player will save.
