Does Visible Light Make Water Evaporate Faster? What Experiments Show

Not necessarily. A 2026 study found no measurable change in evaporation when neat water was exposed to continuous visible light under the tested conditions. That result challenges the idea that visible light alone drives extra evaporation at a clean air–water interface, but it does not settle what happens in hydrogels, droplets, or other porous materials. Earlier studies reported light-associated effects in those different systems.

What the experiments found

The evidence is not a simple yes-or-no verdict for every illuminated water surface. The key distinction is the material being tested: neat water, partially wetted hydrogel, and droplets are not interchangeable systems.

Study System and reported finding How to read the result
PNAS, 2023 Partially wetted hydrogels became visibly absorbing, and illuminated samples evaporated above the authors’ calculated thermal limit. The authors reported a wavelength-dependent response peaking near 520 nm. The observations were reported for hydrogels. The proposed explanation—that photons cleave water clusters from the interface—was a hypothesis, not an established mechanism for ordinary water.
PNAS, 2024 The follow-up described 14 experiments on visible-light interactions with air–water interfaces, including tests of wavelength, incidence angle, and polarization. The authors argued that the results supported the proposed photomolecular effect. This is evidence reported by the study’s authors, not a settled demonstration of climate-scale effects or a consensus mechanism.
2026 neat-water study Continuous 450, 532, and 635 nm illumination left macroscopic evaporation unchanged across a range of humidities. The study also reported no detectable changes in its interfacial vibrational measurements. The result directly challenges an intrinsic visible-light effect at the neat air–water interface under the study’s conditions and measurement sensitivity; it does not test every complex material.
Droplet study, 2020 The study reported that sunlight does not always enhance water-droplet evaporation and associated observed enhancement with reduced reflection of light energy. It is useful context for how illumination and optical conditions can matter, but it is not a direct replication of the later photomolecular experiments.

Does visible light make water evaporate faster?

For neat water in the 2026 study, the measured answer was no detectable increase: continuous visible illumination at the tested wavelengths did not change macroscopic evaporation across the humidities examined. The authors summarized their result by saying, “Together, these measurements show that the neat air-water interface is remarkably insensitive to visible irradiation.” That statement applies to the neat interface and their experimental conditions, not every water-containing material.

The earlier hydrogel studies reported different outcomes in systems that absorb light and have complex, partially wetted structures. The 2023 authors described their proposed explanation as follows: “We interpret these observations by introducing the hypothesis that photons in the visible spectrum can cleave water clusters off surfaces due to large electrical field gradients and quadrupole force on molecular clusters.” The word hypothesis matters: the reported evaporation observations do not by themselves establish that this mechanism operates at a clean water surface.

Can light evaporate water without heat?

Evaporation can respond to energy arriving as light, but showing that a sample evaporates faster under illumination is not enough to prove a nonthermal mechanism. Light may be absorbed and warm a material, and surface shape, porosity, reflection, and other optical or geometric factors can affect how much energy reaches water or escapes from it.

The 2023 hydrogel paper reported evaporation above its calculated thermal limit and proposed a photomolecular explanation. In contrast, the 2026 neat-water study found no measurable evaporation increase under its continuous visible-light conditions and no detectable structural change in the interfacial measurements it reports. It also reports no structural change under femtosecond visible and near-infrared pulses at much higher peak intensities. Its authors infer that substantial enhancement in complex materials is more consistent with photothermal or geometric effects than with an intrinsic, nonthermal pathway in neat water.

Those results narrow the claim rather than resolving every setup: the 2026 measurements weigh against a detectable intrinsic effect in neat water, while the earlier hydrogel findings concern a different material and experimental context.

Does sunlight always accelerate water droplet evaporation?

No. A 2020 droplet study explicitly reported that sunlight does not always enhance droplet evaporation, and linked the enhancement it did observe to reduced reflection of light energy. Sunlight’s effect depends on the droplet and its optical and environmental conditions; the result should not be treated as a test of the later proposed photomolecular mechanism.

What remains uncertain

  • Whether the hydrogel results generalize: A finding in partially wetted hydrogels cannot establish an intrinsic effect at a clean air–water interface.
  • Whether the neat-water result covers all materials: It does not, by itself, rule out light-associated evaporation changes in porous absorbers, droplets, or other complex systems.
  • Whether the proposed effect changes clouds or climate: The 2024 authors discuss possible implications for fog, clouds, climate, and water technologies, but those are implications they suggest, not demonstrated climate-scale consequences.
  • How to interpret theoretical work: A 2025 paper proposes a model for wavelength-dependent behavior while describing the mechanism as a puzzle; a theory paper is not independent experimental confirmation.

The practical scientific takeaway is to keep the claim tied to the test: the 2026 study found no detectable visible-light-driven evaporation increase for neat water under its measured conditions, while earlier work reported effects in hydrogels and air–water-interface experiments that their authors interpret as evidence for a proposed photomolecular mechanism.
