Submarine puts an SSH terminal, an SFTP file browser, and port-forwarding controls together under saved server profiles. That can make it a practical PuTTY and WinSCP alternative if you regularly use all three tools with the same hosts. It does not add a new SSH capability: it brings familiar jobs into one app.
What Submarine combines
The Submarine project describes its app as a free, MIT-licensed SSH and SFTP client built with Rust and Tauri. Its README lists Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android support, alongside a terminal, SFTP, local, remote, and dynamic port forwarding, folder mirroring, Docker tools, server information, and saved commands. These are features documented by the project, not all independently verified in hands-on testing. Submarine project README.

The organizing idea is a saved server profile: connect to a host, then work with its shell, remote files, and forwarding settings in the same app. The project frames this as an alternative to switching between PuTTY and WinSCP; that is its positioning, not evidence that those established tools cannot do the underlying work.
What the reported hands-on use established
A WindowsForum report describing MakeUseOf’s hands-on account says the author used tabbed shells to connect to an Ubuntu host, transferred files over SFTP, edited a remote file, and successfully tested local port forwarding. In that example, a small service bound to the Ubuntu machine’s loopback address was opened through a local port on Windows. This is a reported example, not a broad performance or reliability test. WindowsForum’s report.

The account did not test Folder Mirror or remote and dynamic forwarding. The project documents those features, but their behavior should not be inferred from the local-forwarding example.
Who should consider it as a PuTTY or WinSCP alternative?
Submarine is most compelling if you often open a shell, browse or edit files, and set up a tunnel for the same remote machine. Keeping those tasks close to a shared host profile may reduce app switching.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
If you only occasionally need a terminal, the convenience may not justify changing a familiar setup. Nor is Submarine an automatic replacement for WinSCP if you rely on advanced synchronization or automation: the cited hands-on account says WinSCP offers more depth in those workflows. Keep WinSCP until you have verified that a specific alternative handles your jobs.
How to approach importing existing connections
The project documents import options for PuTTY registry exports, MobaXterm session files, and OpenSSH configuration. The hands-on account did not test these importers, so treat migration as something to validate rather than a guaranteed one-click transfer. The project README.

Security and installation considerations
The project says it encrypts a local vault using keys derived with Argon2id and AES-256-GCM, offers optional cloud sync, and cannot recover a forgotten master password. These are vendor descriptions; the cited material does not establish an independent security audit. Keep a secure backup of essential server details outside the app, and make sure you understand the consequences of losing the vault password. Submarine project README.
The project also says current builds are unsigned, and the reported Windows 11 installation triggered a SmartScreen warning. That matters on managed work devices, where software approval and signing requirements may determine whether you can install it at all. The available account does not establish enterprise suitability.

On first connection, verify the host-key fingerprint through a trusted channel before accepting it. The hands-on report describes comparing an ED25519 fingerprint with Windows OpenSSH; the important point is to confirm the host identity independently, not to accept a prompt automatically.

Be cautious with folder mirroring
The project warns that Folder Mirror can lose changes made during a sync and describes a dry-run option for reviewing overwrites. Because the cited hands-on account did not exercise Folder Mirror, do not treat its description as proof that it is safe for your data. Review the planned changes carefully and keep a separate backup before using it on important files. Submarine project README.
