You can make Perplexity your default assistant on Android, and Perplexity says so in its own product notes. Whether it is more reliable than Gemini is a different question. The official documentation on both apps covers setup and feature limits, not how accurate or dependable either assistant is in day-to-day use. Reliability is something you have to judge yourself, against the tasks you actually rely on. This article explains what each app documents, where the two differ on paper, and how to run a fair test on your own phone.
What Perplexity documents for Android
Perplexity’s product changelog, dated April 10, 2025, includes two Android items. The first is screen highlighting, which lets you ask questions about specific areas of what is on screen. The second is a direct invitation to make the app your assistant: “Try Perplexity as your default Android Assistant for instant access from anywhere on your phone.”

That is a product announcement. It establishes that the setting exists and what the feature is meant to do. It does not say which Android versions or manufacturers support it, how well it handles any particular task, or whether it matches Gemini’s behaviour. Because the entry is from April 2025, check the current Perplexity changelog and your own settings before assuming the feature set is unchanged.

Google’s setup guide for the Gemini mobile app on Android says Gemini can be selected as the primary assistant only under specific conditions:
#1 Best Overall
- YOUR CONTENT, SUPER SMOOTH: The ultra-clear 6.7" FHD+ Super AMOLED display of Galaxy A17 5G helps bring your content to life, whether you're scrolling through recipes or video chatting with loved ones.¹
- LIVE FAST. CHARGE FASTER: Focus more on the moment and less on your battery percentage with Galaxy A17 5G. Super Fast Charging powers up your battery so you can get back to life sooner.²
- MEMORIES MADE PICTURE PERFECT: Capture every angle in stunning clarity, from wide family photos to close-ups of friends, with the triple-lens camera on Galaxy A17 5G.
- NEED MORE STORAGE? WE HAVE YOU COVERED: With an improved 2TB of expandable storage, Galaxy A17 5G makes it easy to keep cherished photos, videos and important files readily accessible whenever you need them.³
- BUILT TO LAST: With an improved IP54 rating, Galaxy A17 5G is even more durable than before.⁴ It’s built to resist splashes and dust and comes with a stronger yet slimmer Gorilla Glass Victus front and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer back.
- Device eligibility. Not every Android phone qualifies, and eligibility is tied to the device rather than to the app version alone.
- The Google app as default assist app. Gemini’s primary-assistant mode depends on the Google app holding the assist role on the device.
- Activation method. On eligible devices, Gemini can be launched by touch, such as a long press of the power button or a swipe from a screen corner. The exact gesture depends on the device.
- “Hey Google.” Voice activation requires the relevant setting to be on, and Google notes it may vary by language and region.
Google also says menu names can differ from one phone to another. If you cannot find an option described here, the wording in your device’s settings is likely different rather than missing.
Where Gemini does not replace legacy Assistant features
Google’s page on what you can do with the Gemini mobile app lists several features that Gemini does not support:
Rank #2
- Carrier: This phone is locked to Tracfone, which means this device can only be used on the Tracfone wireless network. Tracfone plan required, activating is easy, just 3 steps.
- DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.
- CAMERA SYSTEM: Advanced 50MP Quad Pixel camera captures sharp, detailed photos and videos in any lighting condition
- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
- Podcasts
- News and radio stations
- Some third-party music providers
- Interpreter mode
Some familiar quick voice actions still get help from Google Assistant rather than Gemini. Google also says availability can vary by language and by whether the account is a supervised account. If you rely on any of the features above, that is the most concrete reason to test before switching. Google’s page does not say whether Perplexity supports them.

Privacy and data handling
Google’s Gemini Android page says that when Gemini Apps Activity is on, your prompts, responses, and feedback are stored in your Google Account. It also says that even with activity turned off, conversations are saved to the account for up to 72 hours so the service can run and feedback can be processed. That is Google’s own description of its data handling.

Most of the blank-looking cells are gaps in the official material, not evidence that a feature is missing. A “not documented” entry means you need to test that task yourself.
What “more reliable” would need to mean
“Reliable” covers several things that can point in different directions. An assistant can answer every question but cite weak sources. It can be fast on a simple timer request and fail on a multi-step task. It can work well on your phone and poorly on someone else’s. A useful verdict needs you to say which of these you care about before you start testing.
Best Value
- Carrier: This phone is locked to Tracfone, which means this device can only be used on the Tracfone wireless network. Activating is easy, just 3 steps.

- CAMERA SYSTEM: 50MP Quad Pixel camera. Capture sharper, more vibrant photos day or night with 4x the light sensitivity.

How to run your own comparison
- Record your setup. Note the phone model, Android version, and the app versions you are testing. Results on one device do not transfer to another.
- Write a task list before you test. Include the things you use every week: a factual question with a checkable answer, a calendar or reminder request, a message you send by voice, a music or podcast request, and any question about something on your screen.
- Set each app as default in turn. In your phone’s Settings, look for a menu such as Apps, Default apps, or Digital assistant app. The path and wording vary by manufacturer and Android version. Switching back is done in the same menu.
- Run the same tasks on both within a short period. Use the same wording and the same time of day where possible, so network conditions and phrasing do not skew the outcome.
- Score each result. Mark whether it completed, whether it needed a repeat, whether the answer could be checked, and how long it took. Keep the notes for at least a week, because a single good or bad session tells you little.
- Judge the result against your list. If Perplexity handles the tasks you rely on at least as dependably as Gemini, your experience supports the claim for your use. If it fails on the features you depend on, the title does not hold for you, even if the app is good in general.
If you switch and miss something
Changing the default assistant does not delete the other app. If a task that used to work stops working, check whether it falls under the unsupported or Google Assistant-dependent items listed above. You can restore the previous default from the same settings menu you used to make the change.
The reliability claim in the headline is best read as a hypothesis you can test on your own phone, not a conclusion the official sources establish. Those sources date from 2025 and both apps change often, so the settings and feature lists you see may already differ from what is described here.
