I Rebuilt My Portfolio by Following a Browser Request

A visitor sees a portfolio page; behind it, a browser requests HTML and other resources, receives responses, and assembles the result.

I rebuilt my portfolio around what happens after someone opens it: a browser sends a request, a web system returns a response, and the browser fetches and assembles the resources that make the page visible. The page is the result; the journey of its requests is the structure.

Why I used a request as the portfolio’s organizing idea

A portfolio is usually presented as a finished screen: a name, selected work, and ways to get in touch. I wanted its structure to reflect the less visible process that makes any web page appear. A visitor’s browser asks for a resource; a server or intermediary handles that request and sends back a response.

That exchange is the basic client-server model of HTTP. As MDN Web Docs puts it, “HTTP is a client-server protocol: requests are sent by one entity, the user-agent (or a proxy on behalf of it).” A proxy is one example of an intermediary; systems may also include caches or load balancers. The important idea for this portfolio is not a particular provider or technology, but the movement from request to response.

What happens when someone opens a page

Entering a URL is a useful starting point, but it is not a universal packet-by-packet account of what happens next. In a simplified view, the browser resolves the site’s name, establishes whatever connection the protocol needs, and sends an HTTP request. A server or intermediary responds. The browser then processes the returned content and may ask for more resources. MDN’s How the web works explains this high-level sequence.

  1. The browser requests a resource. The first request commonly asks for the page’s HTML.
  2. A server or intermediary responds. The response includes a status code and headers, and may include a body containing the requested content.
  3. The browser parses the HTML. It discovers references to stylesheets, scripts, images, and other resources.
  4. The browser requests those resources. Script execution can trigger additional requests later, so the initial document is only one part of the page’s loading story.

The exact route can vary. Connection reuse, protocol version, caches, proxies, service workers, and other implementation details can change which steps occur or how they are handled. The simplified journey is a model for understanding the system, not a claim that every visit follows an identical trace.

What an HTTP request and response contain

An HTTP message has a start-line, optional headers, a separator, and an optional body. In a request, the method describes the operation the client wants to perform and the path identifies the resource. Headers can supply additional information; some requests also include a body. A response has a status code and headers, and may include a body.

Those concepts remain useful across HTTP versions, but the wire format is not always a readable block of text. HTTP/2 uses binary framing. MDN’s HTTP messages guide describes the message structure and this distinction.

For the portfolio’s central idea, the method and path answer “what is being requested?” The response status helps answer “what happened to that request?” The body, when present, carries content the browser or another client can use.

How separate requests can still belong to one visit

HTTP is stateless at the protocol level: one request does not inherently remember another. Applications can associate otherwise separate exchanges with a session, and cookies are one way to carry that context. This distinction matters because a visitor may experience one continuous browsing session even though the underlying page and its resources arrive through multiple requests. MDN’s Overview of HTTP and A typical HTTP session explain the protocol and session context.

How to inspect the journey in a browser

The request flow is not just a metaphor: browser developer tools let you inspect individual exchanges. In Chrome DevTools, open the Network panel, select a request, and examine its timing and initiator. Chrome documents phases that can include queueing, DNS lookup, connection setup, proxy negotiation, sending the request, waiting for the first byte, and downloading content in its Network features reference.

Reading the response status

Status codes group outcomes into five classes: informational, success, redirection, client error, and server error. The class gives a quick orientation, while the specific code carries the exact meaning. MDN’s HTTP response status codes reference explains the categories and individual codes.

A status code is one part of a response, not a complete explanation of the browser’s experience. The request’s headers, any response body, and subsequent resource requests also matter to the page the visitor ultimately sees.

What this framing does—and does not—say about the build

Following a request through a system gives the portfolio a way to explain the web’s client-server exchange and the browser’s work assembling a page. It does not identify the framework, host, database, cache, or deployment setup behind this portfolio; those project details are not established here.

It covers networking topics including TCP foundations and browser performance.
