Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteI read my friend’s bank statement with her—not to judge individual purchases, but to help her see the pattern across them. The useful part of a spending review is the overview: regular bills, occasional costs and categories that are easy to miss when each transaction is viewed on its own. What the numbers mean, and what to do next, belong to the person whose account it is.
We looked for a pattern, not a verdict
A bank statement is a record of transactions, not an explanation of them. A charge that looks unusual may have a context only the account holder knows, and one month may not reflect someone’s normal routine. So we treated the review as a way to ask better questions, not as proof that a purchase was good or bad.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission’s Moneysmart guidance recommends starting with the past few months of bank statements or app transactions. Looking across a few months can make both recurring and occasional costs easier to notice than scanning a single day. Moneysmart’s spending-tracking guide was last updated on 30 July 2026.
How to review spending together
- Agree on the scope. Let the account holder choose which statements or app history to review and how much detail to share. Begin with a few recent months rather than assuming that one statement tells the whole story.
- Sort transactions into plain-language categories. Moneysmart suggests categories including food, transport, home, health and fun. Use labels that make sense to the person reviewing the spending; the aim is a readable overview, not perfect bookkeeping.
- Record the totals in a format that feels comfortable. A phone, notebook or budgeting app can all work. Paper is a reasonable low-tech option; an app is not a requirement. The sources do not rank these tools or establish that one is more accurate.
- Compare the pattern with the person’s priorities. Ask whether the categories and timing match what they expected, whether bills are manageable, and whether they want to plan for a goal. The account holder decides what, if anything, to change.
- Turn the review into a next-month plan if useful. Consumer.gov describes making a monthly budget, recording spending, comparing actual spending with the plan and using that comparison to plan the next month. Its Making a Budget guide is dated August 2024.
What a review can—and cannot—tell you
Organizing transactions can make recurring expenses, occasional costs and broad spending patterns easier to see. That can help someone think through bills or savings goals, but a review cannot promise a particular amount of savings or a specific financial outcome. Nor does a list of charges reveal why the person made each choice.

For me, the point of looking together was to give my friend a clearer view, not to take control of her money. If a category raises a question, ask rather than assume. A useful conversation leaves decisions with the account holder.
Protect the privacy of the person sharing their records
Bank statements contain sensitive information. Let the account holder set boundaries about which records to show, and avoid repeating identifying merchant details or personal transactions unless they have agreed and the detail is genuinely needed. The guidance below concerns services that access financial data; it is not a complete statement of rules for informal sharing between friends.

See the FCA’s account information and payment initiation services guidance, first published 8 December 2017 and last updated 25 June 2025.
- US data-sharing services: The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recommends understanding what data a service accesses, how often it accesses accounts, what it stores and for how long, and how to end access and request deletion where applicable. Its guidance, What to consider when sharing your financial data, was published 24 July 2020.
Those are UK and US sources respectively, so their guidance should not be treated as one universal legal standard. In any setting, the person sharing the records should remain in control of what is shown and any access they grant.

Choose the simplest method the account holder is willing to use. A notebook or phone note can capture category totals without connecting another service to a bank account. An app may offer a convenient way to organize transactions, but convenience should be weighed against the financial-data access the user is comfortable granting. Moneysmart lists a phone, notebook and budgeting app as possible tracking tools; it does not provide a comparative test or recommend a specific product.
